Decent trade for both teams as the Grizzlies want to contend and the Celtics are in rebuild mode. With Green being able to opt out this summer, Danny Ainge has flipped him for a draft pick and may well look to move on Prince before deadline day or possibly waive him and let him go to a contender.

Ainge is amassing picks for fun ready for a total rebuild. Off the top of my head since last summer Boston are due picks from the Cavs, Dallas, Suns and now Grizzlies. Add in the picks still due from Brooklyn and Danny Ainge has a load of fire power in the draft going forward. The picks due may not be lottery ones but it gives Danny Ainge draft options and trade currency for a few years to come. As the great Celtics Coach and GM Red Auerbach once said "You can never have enough draft picks" or words to that effect.

1st rounders are valuable, but I’m not sure Ainge has had the best of luck with actually drafting guys outside of the 2004 draft (Al Jefferson, Delonte West, Tony Allen). Rondo pretty much fell into his lap. He was a known talent, with some known issues.

I wish the Lakers would take notes.  Even Celtic Pride isn’t to prideful.  While Pride is exactly what is going to hurt the Lakers.

All of these picks are great and all but rarely do players picked in the 20’s to 30’s pan out and thats exactly where most of the picks the celtics are collecting will fall. If I were ainge I would look to package them to move up in the draft and get a higher caliber player as opposed to collecting future 10 and 11th men for the bench.

At a certain point a team can’t even develop this many young players all getting drafted in the same couple of years.

I think what people are forgetting is Not only will the Celtics have like 12 or more draft picks in the next 4-5 years But they will also have a TON of cap room over the next few seasons. They will have a ton of leverage to move up in the draft as well as TANK properly this season and maybe get a top 3 pick. Before Boston traded Rondo, Green and B Wright, they were going to be a late lottery team or even worse, make the playoffs at the 8 spot. Avoid mediocrity and get some great young players instead. Even more so that Ainge got these picks for players who could have left FOR NOTHING.

I for one am very happy in the way Boston is “Reloading” for the future. Just need a little Luck and get a top 3 pick. Okafor he we come! ( Insert Smiley face)

Oh and Green is a great get for Memphis for their playoff run IMO.

What an insane stash of picks Boston has. A top 10 pick and two picks in the 20s or high teens (from Dallas and LAC) in 2015, potentially two lottery picks (their own and Brooklyn’s) as well as Cleveland’s pick in 2016, the right to swap picks with Brooklyn in 2017, their own and Brooklyn’s pick in 2018, and a future first from Memphis. And they also have a lot of seconds that could potentially be valuable, especially the picks from the Sixers and TWolves. Wow.

as a memphis season ticket holder,i love that they’re getting green instead of deng..deng might be the better defender and more efficient player..but green’s ability to score is something they need……..

No team ever uses all the picks, they are trade currency, it gives Ainge the ability to pull off deals, he still has cap space and has expiring deals coming up. The picks due could mean if he rebuilds the team in due course it will be far easier to add missing specific pieces like when the Cavs needed Mosgov, he doesn’t have to mortgage their draft future.

There will be years in the draft when Boston might have two picks due in the 20’s from other teams, they get trade up options etc. Basically it’s all about flexability and the chance to do deals or get in on deals etc.

Exactly. They aren’t going to get 4-5 rookies each draft. They’ll move up in drafts and use the picks as ammo to bring in stars. It’s similar to how Houston built their team. They ended up making many of the picks but drafted well then turned a few of those guys and picks for Harden. Parsons developed and that attracted Howard. Etc.

So yes, this is how you go about rebuilding.

Looks like the Pelicans have jumped in the deal and sent Austin Rivers to Boston. Quincy Pondexter to the Pelicans.
