valentineafter months of squabbling back and forth lebron I mean the cavs have signed (overpaid)Tristan Thompson!! to a 5 year 82 million dollar deal!! that means since July they have committed 290 million dollars to lebron, love, smith and thompson!!!!!! even though sum feel it would be easy to replace what Thompson brought to the team especially with varejo returning! and his asking price far exceeded his talent!!!! but king James stated how important it was to bring (his buddy)Thompson back!!i guess what the king wants the king gits!!!!

he_gets_bucketsParticipantSuch a stupid decision, no way is he worth this money when they’ve already got 2 guys making huge money in the front court as well as Lebron and Kyrie making loads. All for an average PF who has one above average skill, offensive rebounding, while being a poor defender and useless on offense outside of putbacks. Crippling their roster flexibility.

frogmanParticipantYou clearly don’t get it. The Cavs window is NOW. After Lebron is gone the Cavs will more than likely go back to mediocrity as no free agents are going to sign in Cleveland over other markets. They are going all out to win over the next few years. They don’t care about paying taxes and I say kudos. And i espeially don’t know why people on the internet are concerned, it’s not like you’re paying the players.
This is exactly why Thompson held out so long, he took advantage of the situation to get payed. Pretty smart if you ask me, he clearly knows he ain’t really worth top 5 PF money.

he_gets_bucketsParticipantNever said it was a dumb move on Thompson’s part, great job misrepresenting my point. Clearly its a very shrewd move on his behalf, getting much more than he would have even if he had entered next Summers spending bonanza of free agency.
Cavs being in "now" mode doesn’t change the fact this is a dumb signing that will handicap them next year when Mozgov, a much more vital piece to their team "NOW", goes into free agency and they’ve already got 50 mil a year going to Varejao, Love and Thompson, and thus won’t be able to keep him around and will once again have no rim protection. Dumb signing because it cripples their roster not only this coming year but for years to come when LeBron does leave like you say.

ExumInfernoParticipantMozgov is twice as important to the Cavs, so next year they either pay a lot for him or he finds a new team.
T Thompson is way overpaid, he is just a rebounder like Jamie Feick or Reggie Evans, he isn’t someone that has scoring moves. He can rebound, but he can’t have the ball passed to him in the post with the idea that he will score.
GM LeBron, that must be it. So with the backups in the paint T Thompson and A Varejao on huge money, that is a lot of money sitting on the bench for more than half the game, but if it is something the Cavs have to pay to keep LeBron around I guess they have to do it.
If I am the other team, I just foul T Thompson because he hits barely 60%.
Crazy money. The Cavs can spend it if they want, but he really is just a very expensive bench player with only rebounding as an ability.

Greek-Ballerthey fucked up let’s be real here.. And I really feel like it’s Lebron’s fault.. I get it’s his friend and they share the same agent, but everyone that understands basketball knows he’s severely overpaid and could have easily been replaced.. I think the Cavs shot themselves in the foot..

phila9012ParticipantYeah, they could probably have gotten ed davis who makes $8 million a year for a future first round pick and the rights to cedi osman to go in their trade exception. Then thompson would have had to sit out the year and be a restricted free agent next year. Then he would have to get an offer and have the cavs could decide to match or he would have to accept the qualifying offer, and they would also be able to know what the mozgov situation looked like as well. They had nothing to gain by signing him especially with Kevin love looking healthy.

canadabasketballisrisingParticipantpoor defender?…. I dont think he’s a great defneder, but he isn’t poor (well below average) at anything on defense… Limited on offense (outside of rebounding, yes; of course).

Rip256That’s a 6 out of 10 deal in my opinion.
He’s not that good, but any team in the league would have a spot for TT
And that’s the current price for someone of his calibre. A legit starting quality PF.

Bill Walton’s KneesParticipantWhile I agree he’s not worth anywhere near 16 million a season, it is important to remember the salary cap is projected to increase to 108 million with a 127 million dollar tax threshold. This eases the pain a little bit, and many will argue that paying 60 million in taxes this season (and more next season if they re-sign Mozgov) for a championship starved city is worth the money.

CDPHParticipantThis deal proves how powerful simply having LeBron in your corner is. The Cavs now have two of the six highest paid power forwards in basketball.
I get that the Cavs are going for it this year, but that doesn’t make this any less of a giant overpay.

Meditated StatesParticipantFor a bench player who does not score. Dumb. He better average a double double for that.

CDPHParticipantThe other thing to consider is that with the cap blowing up in the coming seasons, contracts like this are going to be a lot easier to justify.

PulseGlazerParticipantThe finances only affect the Cavs luxury tax bill. They are capped out either way with only the exceptions to add players. Since I don’t care about their owners’ wallet, it’s hard to see how he doesn’t make them a better basketball team, especially since the money carries no opportunity cost.
