Daprob89ParticipantChicago Suntimes Reports:
NEW YORK — Carmelo Anthony has told the Denver Nuggets he won’t sign the three-year contract extension worth nearly $65 million he has been offered unless he is traded to the New York Knicks. Using the most definitive language possible, a source who has been privy to private discussions among Anthony, his representatives and the Nuggets told ESPN.com that Anthony won’t agree to sign anywhere for the long term unless he is dealt to the Knicks. Anthony has been at the center of trade talks involving numerous teams, including the Bulls, who didn’t return a phone call seeking comment. After the Nuggets’ 129-125 loss Sunday to the Knicks, Anthony was coy in discussing his future but predicted the Nuggets won’t trade him to a destination that isn’t on his wish list. ‘‘I don’t think so,’’ Anthony said. ‘‘I don’t think that will happen.’’ Asked why he would make such a definitive statement, Anthony said: ‘‘I don’t want to answer that. I don’t want to talk about that.’’ Anthony received a standing ovation from Knicks fans during player introductions after hearing their pleadings on the streets since the Nuggets arrived in Manhattan late Friday. ‘‘Everybody’s yelling out the windows, ‘Melo, we need you in New York,’ ’’ Anthony said. ‘‘That feels good when you know someone out there wants you to come and represent their team and represent their city. That’s what I took from that.’’ The New Jersey Nets have been holding out hope that their offer of Derrick Favors, Troy Murphy and two first-round draft picks would be the best offer available to the Nuggets, but the news that Anthony won’t agree to sign with them for the long term effectively knocks them out of the bidding. Anthony is under contract for this season at $17.14 million and holds a player option for next season at $18.52 million. If he remains with the Nuggets until the end of the season and exercises his early termination option, he would become an unrestricted free agent. Anthony hasn’t publicly ruled out the possibility of staying with the Nuggets for the long term, acknowledging only that he is weighing all his options.
My comments to this is: If your the Nuggets take the deal instead of walking away empty handed this summer, because its no way he’s coming back. Resign Anthony to an extension and trade him to the Knicks for some young talent like Wilson Chandler, Landry Fields and 2 future first round pick.

HitsterParticipantThe longer the season goes on, the less that Donnie Walsh will surely offer up for Melo, if he knows that Melo may well end up in NY next summer. There is talk of Melo signing this 3 year extension which will be on the table until 30th June next year so Denver could move Melo on draft night if they wanted to in effect. Chris Singleton on ESPN pointed out that after deadline day Eddy Curry’s expiring deal will not be tradeable so NY have to do the deal before then as a draft time move would be very hard to balance salarywise.
Also with STAT on a 5 year deal then NY would surely want Melo on a similar or longer deal so the 3 year deal on the table may not appeal to NY for that reason. With the CBA then Melo resigning before 30th June may offer him some salary protection in case new deals only are reduced but Melo is a multimillionaire so what is a couple of million a year to him a lot of which would go to the IRS.
I believe that NY have cap space to sign Melo to a deal similar to STAT’s next summer but would they have to renounce their rights to Wilson Chandler as Miami had to clear cap space to sign the big 3. The Knicks can forgo Bill Walker as a team option but Turiaf has a decent player’s option which I’d guess he’d take up.
Also could NY draft someone next summer with their pick then trade him on maybe to Denver as part of an S and T or would this count as trading a pick in effect? This way they could get an asset to Denver before their next available first rounder in 2014.
If I was Donnie Walsh, I’d sit tight then look to do an S and T next summer with a first rounder or two in order to get the deal done.

Toronto16ParticipantIf I’m the Knicks I’m not giving up crap to get Melo. I’m holding on to that expiring contract of Eddy Curry, playing out the season, and signing Melo outright in the offseason.

BKKnicksfanParticipantDenver should just go
Melo and Anderson for Curry, Fields, Gallo and a 1st rounder
Billups for Thompson, Greene and a 1st round pick
You get cap space, 2 1st round picks and 5 players who could help

bkballerParticipantIf i’m donnie walsh i dont trade anything for melo. If he is still around when the summer rolls around, great i got a great chance of signing him. If he gets traded elsewhere and signs and extension, i dont lose sleep over it and use my $15 million in cap space to add 1 or 2 very solid defensive big men. Then hopefully Azibukee gets back to his old self and resign him.
Felton/Douglas
Fields/ Buike (healthy)
Gallo/Chandler
Amare/big defensive PF (5-6 mil)
Big defensive C (8-9 mil)/Turiaf/Mozgov
That team wins 50+ games. Melo would be nice and make the extremely dangerous, but honestly this team is a few good interior defenders (and a healthy SG in Azibukee) away from being able to compete with just about anybody.

Daprob89ParticipantI see what you saying, but its no guarantee the Knicks will get Melo in the off-season they already failed once with Lebron and Wade. With teams like Chicago or even OKC which are better contenders looking to take that next big step forward . The Knicks have to make some bold moves if they want Anthony because he’s not just going to fall in their lap but if they get him now they can sign Micheal Redd or J Rich or Jamal Crawford with their Mid-Level exception in the off-season. They should go for it now and worry about the repercussions later because with great risk comes great success.

NYK2010ParticipantWilson Chandler, Landry Fields and 2 future first round picks that would be a terrible deal for the Knicks.
Who is there Shooting Guard, Azubuike and Walker?
Roger Mason has done nothing this year and 2 1st rounders they can’t deal the 2011 pick becaz of NBA rules.
So it would be the 2013 and 2015 picks going and they already lost their 2012 pick.
What about Danilo Gallinair, Bill Walker, Eddy Curry and a 1st rounder for Mello.

Daprob89ParticipantNo i wouldnt trade Gallinari he’s keep defenders honest with his ability to spread the floor and he’s prefect for the Knicks play style

BKKnicksfanParticipantAlright, I’ll be the Knicks fan to say it
" The Knicks giving up Curry, Fields and Gallo plus a 1st rounder for Melo is not a bad deal. Why wait when you can get him now. Realistically, Fields WILL NOT be a superstar. Gallo is nothing better then a #2-#3 guy and Curry- LOL"
Do it now.

QUINCEY HODGES1Imma wait till he actually says something. No more following some source that claims to know top secreat things especially after melo said he didn’t say none of these things. He could be lying or could be telling the truth. Until he let’s the public know for sure what the deal is I’ll do what everyone else does……..guess. Hopefully he goes east. Less headach for my lakers.

NYK2010ParticipantFields won’t be a superstar and you know that based on what.
How many guys are superstars 25 games into their career come on.
Between Gallo or Chandler I’d keep Chandler he’s more versatile, plays more defense and drives to the rim more.

HitsterParticipantIn response to Daprob, I’m assuming by what Melo is saying he wants to play for the Knicks and thus they are his first choice. The Knicks were in the mix for LeBron but probably not D-Wade who was always likely to stay at Miami if they could get one more top FA in. I’d always assumed that the Knicks would get one of STAT or Joe Johnson due to the D’Antoni connection and they probably got the best option in STAT.
I’m always reluctant to trade away young talent but if it could get the Knicks Melo then it is an option worth considering as they can add experienced role players like Miami has done maybe the likes of Grant Hill, the players that Daprob has mentioned or a good intangibles guy like say Shane Battier for their MLE.
Felton has done well but would CP3 or Deron be an option in 2012 perhaps, the Knicks have a team option over Felton in 2012/13 so they do have all bases covered and can either move Felton on or extend him fora reasonable amount if required.

BKKnicksfanParticipantQuincey, you crack me up.
Like I said before, all 500 of the people (from league sources, to sources close to the situation) have said Melo want to be a Knick
The 6 people who decide to refute that are sources as well.
Of Course Carmelo isin’t gonna admit to only wanting to go to NY. That would kill all his value to any other team because he would be a rental. THUS the reason he wasn’t moved earlier.
