drk3351ParticipantHey guys, a bit of an update video on doug’s defense since that was the main concern about him coming out of college. I breakdown his defense in the preseason, let me know what you think and thanks for watching.

CU.LIONSParticipantIf DM can be at least a decent defender, many of his so called flaws can be hidden with good team help defense and rotations. If there is any team that he could succeed with in that regard is Chicago.

rich.homie.mitchParticipantThink the same way. Since Thibs is a defensive mastermind he should hide doug on defense or have him guard the weakest wing player. He will also have Gibson and Noah having his back. He’s no tony allen, but I think Chicago’s defense mindset and players will not make a him a blasphemy on defense.

Robb_CParticipantLets not worry about McDerrmott, Jesus Christ Niko Mirotic couldn’t guard his own shadow..
He will have problems defending all year.. just poor lateral foot speed on the defensive side of things.

GBeeParticipantniko has actually been really solid defensively in the preseason. his defense has been better than his offense. smart, plays with good effort. solid on the rotations, even making plays with his anticipation.

Hi its BenParticipantI agree with this. He’s been a lot better on rotations recently too. And he’s even been able to block some shots on defense. He’s averaging over a block and steal per game.

King CaluchaParticipantIt seems Coach Thibs has had long talks with Doug about the importance of defense. He’s never going to be a lockdown defender like Pippen, but he at least he tries (which is about 70% of the job in defense). In my opinion, he doesn’t need to become a great defender to stay in the league. It is possible he becomes a decent team defender (…even Kyle Korver rotates decently) and that could be enough to guarantee solid minutes.

ExumInfernoParticipantBulls should not worry about that. Gasol, Noah and Gibson can clean up after the other players and guard the paint. Bulls just need to get McDermott on the floor and pass him the ball. Paxson, Hodges, Kerr and Armstrong couldn’t really defend, but they hit big shots.
Something to remember from his college play, McDermott couldn’t put in huge efforts on defense as they needed his offense, they needed him to play big minutes and couldn’t afford to have him foul out. With the Bulls, and with Dunleavy and other players there to share the role, McDermott can put in some extra effort on the defensive end because he doesn’t have to be one of the biggest pieces of the team.

druneave3ParticipantGreat job as always Coach Dan. His defense is laughable right now and must improve. As you pointed out his weakside rotations are basically nonexistent. The game is just moving really fast for him right now. His first few games he has looked so panicked and frantic but for the first time last night against the Hornets he looked more relaxed and poised on the offensive end. Defense was still the same however. Thibs even called a time out and met Doug on the floor to yell at him with his hands flailing in the air.
Good news for Doug. Thibs IS calling a time out and yelling at him. Being on the Bulls and learning from Thibodeau is the best possible scenario for him.
Fellow rookie Mirotic is in the boat but they both definetly have a place in the league.

GBeeParticipantno, his defense has not been laughable. he’s making typical rookie mistakes with rotations, which is understandable given how much zone he played in college. what’s more important is that he doesnt look physically overmatched, which was what was predicted. rotations and tendencies have to be learned.
