llperezhere’s an article discussing the cam newton situation. Cam is the leading heisman candidate and the starting qb for the current undefeated and #2 team in the nation auburn tigers:
http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/columns/story?columnist=wojciechowski_gene&id=5872192&sportCat=ncf
a basic rundown of the situation is that newtons father was reprted to be shopping his son to different schools with an asking price of somewhere between 100-200k to sign. All of this was investigated by the ncaa and the evidence was pretty overwhelming that his dad was in fact telling all shcools that his kid would only sign if he got paid. Now there is apparently no proof if a money transaction did go down. The ncaa decided that while cam’s dad broke rules cam newton himself had no knowledge thus he is innocent and no punishment was neccesary.
I can see it now. Basically parents, friends, whoever will be shopping athletes all they want and as long the kid himself plays dumb and is not involved and there is no proof of money being handed over, then its all good. Lets be real here though, if this was someone other then argubaly the best player on arguably the best team with potential for millions of dollars being made for the ncaa, there would have been punishment. I really dont care that much about the situation to be honest, but i think the ncaa just kinda exposed themselves as huge hypocrits here and opened the door for more situations in the future of athelets being shopped around.
Oh yeah, and so who do you guys got between oregon and auburn?

llperezand to make it clear, i think shady stuff goes down so often in college atheltics i really dont get worked up over it and im not trying to single newton out. But when this stuff does come out, the ncaa needs to stay consistent or else they look dumb. I mean not even 1 game suspension or something?

tylert6ParticipantI am actually from Alabama and have been au Auburn fan my whole life. Buy season tickets and everything. There is a lot more to the story than what ESPN reports. I am not by any means saying Cam, Cecil, or Auburn are entirely innocent but unlike Reggie Bush, there apparently was no money ever exchanged. Again, the charge is on Cecil and Miss St, no one has ever said Auburn paid, as a matter of fact all the witnesses say they do not think Auburn did. Very tricky situation, like you said this could open the door for a lot more instances, but to play devils advocate how do you punish a kid for a dad "pimping"him out? A kid , again a kid, doesnt have the wherewithall to respond to that situation whether he knew or not. It happens everywhere, Auburn, USC, anywhere Calipari or Kiffin go, so its a hard case to disect. My opinion, Cam is ultimately ruled entirely eligible AU and Miss St get a small punishment and Cecil and Kenny Rogers face severe punishment. Just my 2 cents, but I actually sorta know a little about this and am close to it, so I figured I would chime in with my first post. And Auburn Oregon will be the worst defensively played game in college football history lol, I call 162-148 AU just cause Im a fan.
Oh, and how bout them cavs and heat? haha

stanford hoopsI was listening to The vick the brick show and they were saying its just like the Reggie bush situation and Cam should have gotten the same punishment. My thing is how is it the same. Cam’s dad tried to get money but theres no proof that he recieved any money. Reggie bush family got a house and Bush got money if im not mistaken so that is alot worst

Ghost01ParticipantThis is a mess. The NCAA did not finish the investigation. Therefore, if they find something on Newton at any point in time, Auburn and Newton will lose all of there accolades from this season.
I originally thought Oregon was going to blow Auburn out, now i am leaning towards Auburn. I would bet on it easily being the most high scoring title game in the BCS era.

mikeyvthedonParticipantI may be biased, but I am taking Oregon. Also, LaMichael James should win the Heisman trophy. In all seriousness, Newton will be the favorite and has done enough to get it, but this whole situation is shady. Plus, to think his dad was the only one who was part of it is total garbage. I have gone into this before, but I do not have much of a problem with Cam Newton winning the Heisman with his accomplishments on the field this season. If he does indeed go undefeated, than he will indeed win the Heisman over LaMichael (I honestly wonder if LaMichael will even finish second, and anything less will piss me off). But, GO DUCKS!!!! I think we have a chance against anyone this year, we just need to win this Civil War first! By the way, DT (our QB) has passed for more TD’s than Cam, and he can run it. Just saying. Not to mention, if someone says our defense is garbage, Auburn has issues there too. Plus, our run game, second to none.

llperezi dont think for one second cam didnt know and i do think money was exchanged. But we cant punish people on what we think. As for the game, im pulling for oregon. Sec has been too dominant in college football and its time they get knocked down a notch. SHould be some fun video game style football to wath.

Ghost01ParticipantI think James is very deserving of the Heisman. But Newton has been the clear cut favorite. Thats why they should finish the investigation or atleast try to. Now Newton will get it, probably get it revoked and James will get nothing. Boise’s Kicker a close third…

delfamParticipantjust pay college athlets and it’ll fix everything. Schools make millions of these guys and they get paid a scholarship at around $100,000 to 4 years. Read an article somewhere that Cam is worth somewhere around 3 million for Auburn and Cam’s getting like 3% of that, come on.

SteroidParticipantThe thing is they should get it right before they screw all the other teams up in the process. It isn’t fair to the other teams that an inellgible player gets to play. I have lived in Tuscaloosa, Alabama all my life, and I go to Alabama, which Auburn is our rival, and this is all I hear about nowadays. This has been in the SEC leagues office every since January, so this should have been done since the season started. Also, there is evidence that Cecil was shopping Cam around also through phone records. Regardless if there isn’t legitimate evidence that he accepted money, the attempt to do that should be punishable. If that is the ruling: Since Cam didn’t know of anything, he is in the clear, then Reggie Bush should get his trophy back because he didn’t know of anything allegedly…

SteroidParticipantCollege athletes are already getting "paid"… They are getting a college education that the majority of us that go to college are probably going to have to pay for in the future. Moreover, they are getting a college education through doing something they love to do, supposedly. I don’t think college athletes are in any position to complain about what they aren’t getting. With that being said, the rulings on these things need to be fixed and redefined. I think that college athletes on scholarship could get some type of allowance, but I’m sure the majority of them do are good to go anyway especially if they got an athletic scholarship. They get all of the unused money from other scholarships & financial aid refunded to them which can be in the thousands of dollars… more than enough for a college student who is going to school for free each semester.

llperezyou cant pay college players. I mean newton is worth that money to auburn becuase auburn is a great school/team for football. What about the little schools who cant afford to pay athletes? What about back ups? I mean is it basically gonna become a pro system where you hire an agent to try and get you the sweetest deal at the best school? That stuff would never work.

mikeyvthedonParticipantThan the question would be, who makes what? I mean, do we pay all of the students the same amount of money? Would LaMichael James be paid the same as Remene Alston (our third stringer)? It would be so difficult to regulate. College athletics is a tough egg to crack, there are so many variables involved. The one thing I get kind of upset about would be the NCAA taking things away from people that have already been imprinted into our minds and were basically over. I know people will say, "Well, technically Reggie Bush didn’t win the Heisman" or "Technically Memphis didn’t play Kansas in the championship game", but, are we really going to forget those things happened? I also am always for someone playing college sports rather than being suspended. So, it is really difficult for me to have anything against players like Bush or Newton, who were just flat out great players and fun to watch. The backbone of this system is of course that it provides these "student" athletes an education, and I think for the majority, it tends to do so. But, on the other hand, I feel the reason college athletics prospers is due to its professional counterparts. It will always be a somewhat hypocritical system with the way the NCAA makes tons of money of these students who receive nothing after all is said and done (though an education is not bad, helps your prospects down the road), but it would be so hard to regulate actual payment to the players. Right now, I guess we just have to accept the system and just ignore these ridiculous penalties handed down far after the fact, which I think we do a pretty decent job of doing. Sure, they make news stories, the NCAA puts a big X over the accomplishments, but we do not forget that they happened and we do not forget the final results.
