 I believe Buddy Hield will be Rookie of the Year. I’m not a Simmons hater by any stretch, in fact, I’m sure he’ll turn in a fine campaign. But his numbers will reflect what he is; a highly versatile talent that does a lot of different things. He’ll have a ton of attention on him, and not a whole lot of other threats to distract defenses. 

Buddy Hield is 22 years old, he has no veteran players standing in the way of his minutes (Eric Gordon signed with Houston), even Ryan Anderson is gone, and with him goes shots. Hield is going to get plenty of looks, with opponents focusing on Anthony Davis. I also think New Orleans is going to be more comfortable in their system as they enter their second year under Alvin Gentry.

I love Jamal Murray too, but the Denver backcourt is a little murky with Mudiay and Harris. I don’t think Brandon Ingram is ready to put up numbers that would garner much ROY consideration, nor will Jaylen Brown or Dragan Bender. Kris Dunn figures to come off the bench this year.

I predict that Buddy Hield will average 18-20 points per contest, will get scorching hot a few times and may even post a 40-point game once or twice. I also believe he will beat the record for 3s made in a season by a rookie (158, Kerry Kittles).

 Actually, the list that I was looking at is outdated; Curry made 166 treys as a rookie, then Lillard beat that with 185. But Hield is capable!

 I’d be really shocked if Buddy Hield won rookie of the year. The 76ers are already forming their roster around Ben Simmons and Brandon Ingram will have every opportunity to succeed as a Laker. I just doubt Hield has a better year than either of those guys. I do agree that he’s in a good position to excel in New Orleans. His game is ready made to complement Anthony Davis  and as the OP said he has no one ahead of him for minutes.

i wouldn’t give hield the starting sg spot just yet.  the pelicans did sign etwaun moore to a 4 yr- $34M contract.  when jimmy butler was hurt, moore put up some extremely good numbers and then when rose went out, he outplayed aaron brooks for that starting role.  moore is a better defender than hield and hit 45% of his 3-pointers.

and they could always start hill and slide evans to sg.

 You make some good points about why he could succeed but i just dint think he is good enough to win ROY.  They still have Holiday and Evens who are much better defenders.  Even if Hield avgs 20ppg his game isnt well rounded enough

Gentry runs a high tempo offense and loves shooters, and he should get plenty of looks with Anthony Davis on the floor. There is no reason he shouldn’t get a decent amount of playing time from day one the way their roster is constructed.

Simmons and ingram should both be given the opportunity to play a lot of mins and put up numbers but they are on teams that realistically don’t seem to have much of a chance of making the playoffs. If hield puts up decent numbers and can contribute to new Orleans possibly making a playoff push, that may sway some to vote for him. 

My prediction would still be on Simmons though. Philly is going to center their entire offense around him and he should probably put up the best stats. Historically, the guy who puts up the best numbers usually wins Roy.

 Perfect situation for his skill set b/c New Orleans needs for him to only be himself & that is good b/c he is not capable of anything more……

Hield can not create his own shot, he does not make his teammates better & he is altogether a Very average player.

I understand he is a gym rat – there are Millions of gym rats…… If desire & work ethic were All that were required to be an NBA Star there would be millions of NBA stars…..

Remember 5 years ago July 4th 2011 —– Miami Heat had just lost in the NBA Finals to the Dallas Mavericks. Kobe Bryant & the Lakers had won the previous Two Championships….. Derrick Rose was named the youngest MVP in NBA history…. & Kevin Durant was a young Phenom as well but the Public was focused on the Current NBA stars of that day

 Dwight Howard, Kobe, Lebron, Dirk, Dwayne Wade, Kevin Garnette, Paul Pierce, Pao Gasol, Tim Duncan, Chris Paul, Manu Ginobli, Rajon Rondo, Tony Parker, Dwayne Wade, Carmelo, Deron Williams were All Stars who finished in the Top 5 for MVP between 2007 – 2011…… It seems So long ago…….

 Hield has a shout to become rookie of the year if he gets decent playing time and gets his shooting range working in the NBA. I’d say 18 to 20ppg might be a bit optimistic but I could see him getting 15ppg.
