darkman97ParticipantThe San Antonio Spurs are going to retire Bruce Bowens #12 number on March 21st. I know he has ment alot to the team and the championships that they won. But for a career he avg 6.1 points 2.2 rebounds, 1.2 assists, .8 steals and .3 blocks.
I know his specialty was defense and defense gets so underrated when compared to the offensive side of the game, but is he worth the retired jersey honor? I’ll even ask another question. Can he make it to the HOF? If Dennis Rodman can make it based on only his rebounding prowness can Bruce Bowens make it based on his excellent defense alone?

joecheck88ParticipantI had this argument with a friend of mine when he posted this on facebook. His argument for Bowen is that he was an integral part of championships for a city that has little championship history and is a small market team. And that he was a good guy off the court for the city and still is involved in the organization today. Plus, he always guarded the other teams best player. That his impact can not be measured on stats alone. A fair argument and I totally get it.
My argument against it. He avg about 6.5ppg with the Spurs. He hurt them for the FT line. But my main point was is John Paxson’s number going to be retired by the Bulls because he helped win championships? Or James Posey by the Heat? Or Robert Horry by the Lakers? No!! His place in history should be great defensive player that played a good role on a great team. When you look up in the rafter in San Antonio in 50 years, you could see Gervin, Duncan, Robinson, Ginobili, Parker and then Bowen?? This honor should be for the elite players of a franchise.
I am happy for Bruce and it is a great honor. I just think that honor should be reserved for the trancedent players of a franchise. Don’t water down you history by including role players in your Hall of Fame.

MCRIZZParticipant3x nba champion 5x first team all defensive 3x second team all defensive 2x runner up for defensive player of the year…I dont think he ever makes the hall of fame, but for that franchise he is one of the key reasons they were able to win the championships they did, making a jersey retirement suitable….Defensive players normally do not get the credit they deserve so good on the Spurs organization…Congratulations Bruce Bowen

RUDEBOY_ParticipantI See We Have Alot of Bruce Bowen Fans on here…NO WAY SHOULD HE BECOME A HALL of Famer and Neither Should Robert Horry!!!
But you have to give him his Props for working hard and after years of being a journeyman player he finally found his place in the league…
Bowen was 1 of the Dirtiest players to ever play the game..And people need to Stop putting him in the same sentence as Rodman..

marcusfizer21ParticipantI don’t like it one bit… As solid and productive as Bowen was for the San Antonio Spurs, I don’t think he did anything to warrant that kind of honor. I’m not taking anything away from Bowen, he was a factor on the Spurs’ championship run but this is insane to think that he’d be up there among guys like David Robinson, Sean Elliott, Avery Johnson and George Gervin…
If this goes on though, the other teams might look at guys like Horace Grant (Bulls), Robert Horry (Lakers), Kenny Smith (Rockets) as "deserving" too… SMH
