mikeyvthedonParticipantThe past two days, 8 teams from some top east coast preparatory basketball academies played in what is called "The National Prep Championship". No Oak Hill, no Huntington and no Findlay, but these are some pretty stacked schools. Last year, St. Thomas More won with Andre Drummond coming up big in this particular event.
Brewster Academy won their 2nd National Prep Championship in 3 years, with Jakarr Sampson taking the MVP. Sampson was once committed to St. John’s, but is now said to be considering Baylor, Texas, Kansas, Providence not leaving out the possibility of re-committing to St. John’s (also of note, he was once committed to Xavier). Sampson is considered a hybrid forward and scored 22 points in the championship game in a 87-76 win over Hargrave Military Academy, as well as playing quite well in previous contests in the tournament.
Other standouts for Brewster would be:
- TJ Warren, a McDonald’s All-American who is set to go to North Carolina State
- Mitch McGary, big man committed to Michigan who blew up over the summer, than kind of came back down to earth a little taking a back seat to some of Brewster’s other players. He apparently had his best game of the tournament in the finals with 12 points and aggressive rebounding and defense.
- Aaron Thomas, who is taking a post grad year and I believe is still committed to Florida State
- Semaj Christon, PG committed to Xavier who is very highly regarded
- Jalen Reynolds, aggressive PF also committed to Xavier
Very solid group in this tournament as it also featured:
- Tilton Academy: Nerlens Noel, Georges Niang, Goodluck Okonoboh (2013) (no Wayne Selden (2014), who has been injured)
- New Hampton School: Olivier Hanlan, Zach Auguste, Noah Vonleh (2014, hit a Ralph Sampson-esque game winner over Nerlens Noel, huge potential)
- Northfield Mount Hermon: A school a former camp counsellor of mine went to that gave Brewster their only loss of the year right before this tournament
- St. Thomas More: Last seasons winner, though I am not really familiar with any names on their current roster
- Notre Dame Prep: Myles Davis, Sam Cassell Jr. and Steven Adams
