McDunkinORLANDO, Fla. – Boston Celtics summer league guard Dairis Bertans was hospitalized after a scary collision during Wednesday night’s win against the Detroit Pistons, but a CT scan test was negative and the plan called for him to be released later in the night, according to the team.
With 2:24 left in the third quarter of the 92-90 win, Bertans got fouled on a hard take to the hoop and fell face-first into the basket stanchion. As he lay on the floor, waiting for a stretcher to take him off the court, the gym fell silent in obvious apprehension.
Bertans could be seen moving his arms and flashed the thumbs-up signal while the medical staff wheeled him away. He was taken to Florida Hospital, where he underwent a CT scan for precautionary reasons. Even before the test came back negative, the Celtics believed that Bertans “should be fine,” according to Celtics assistant general manager Mike Zarren.
“It was sad to see him get hurt because he was playing so well. He’s been playing so well this whole summer league. Prayers to him,” said Phil Pressey, who had 14 points, three rebounds, three steals and two assists.
Added Marcus Smart, who pitched in 14 points and six assists, but only shot 4-for-13: “It looked bad. Especially from my angle I knew it was bad. He tried to catch himself but it was a little too late for him. They said he’s going to be alright, though. He had a little neck pain, we just didn’t want to take a risk with those. He’s going to be alright, and we’re just going to pray for him.”
Before going down, Bertans managed seven points on 3-for-5 shooting, scoring in various ways – one 3-pointer, one strong drive to the cup, and one pull-up jumper near the top of the key. He has flashed a nice shooting touch and offensive feel throughout the entire week.
“Really scary. He’s such a nice kid,” said Jay Larranaga. “It wouldn’t matter who the player was; you care about them. But we just hope for the best for him.”
