    5 years $34 million

The Blazers seem to love loading up on the wing. Not only that, they love kicking Utah in the nuts. I’m sure Utah will match, but it’ll come at an expensive price tag, similar to Paul Millsap last season.

Yeah NBA TV is really late with news. They reported Ray Allen re-signed 2 days after it happened and it was live.

I didn’t hear about it until today(sunday) and it appears that the offer sheet did not arrive on Utah’s desk until late Saturday night. Which means the 7 days to match will not start until tomorrow Monday. But don’t worry Utah will match it, the coaching staff loves him too much to let him go.

One thing I don’t understand is why the Jazz wait to resign their free agents. While other teams move actively, signing, resigning free agents, making deals, proposing trades, Utah just sits back and watches all the action unfold. Millsap was a big free agent that Utah knew they needed to keep, so they should have just resigned him before Portland signed him to an offer sheet, they didn’t and he became a very pricy backup for Utah. Now it looks like Matthews will be the same. I expected him to be resigned for close to 4 million, not 9 million. I wish Utah would resign the free agents they need to keep quicker, that way their money does not go empty so quickly. Its not that their free agents are unwilling to play in Utah, they love to, but for some reason Utah likes to wait and it drives me insane, because year after year, we seem to do nothing to help our roster, and improve our chances of winning.

if the jazz are smart, they wont match. Wait one year until next season when AK comes of fthe books and go after some free agents then. Mathews is good, but guys like ihm come around every summer and 7 mill per is too much, in my humble opinion.

I don’t think they should match either… Just bring back Ronnie Brewer.

What are you guys talking about? Matthews is good. He may have gone undrafted, but to me that doesn’t matter. Your play does. 2nd rounders always become good players for Utah. He is young, he averaged 9ts a game as a rookie last year. He will get better, but 9pts is good for a rookie. even Kobe game him his props. Right now, I would start him over Brewer. Why he can shoot better and defend just as well. Like I said where a player does not matter to me. Coach Sloan loves him and so does the rest of management, they will match and they should. Coach Sloan doesn’t just love any player, when he loves someone its because they play as hard as hell and know how to play. Sloan knows what he is talking about, he’s been around for quite awhile. I agree Brewer needs to be brought back but as a 3 not a 2. 2’s are known for their shooting. Why do you think they are called SHOOTING guards? They can shoot. Brewer cannot. So he is more of a 3 than a 2 to me. He needs to be brought back to possibly start at the 3 incase AK ends up playing 4 or AK gets hurt.

Lets look at a few of the free agent 2 guards that are left and see if Matthews is better than them:
    Reddick
    Fernandez
    Korver
    Morrow
    Tony Allen
    Bogans
    Devin Brown
    Shannon Brown

I’d say Matthews is better than all of these 2 guards. Mark my words, Utah needs to resign him and they will. Besides let’s say Utah does not bring back Brewer who would they start at the 2….Miles? I’d much rather start Matthews than inconsistent Miles. I do think Miles will have a good year this year, but I don’t think he is anything more than a good 6th man. Matthews will start next year, and he will average around 10-14 pts as a sophomore, once again that is good for a player that undrafted.
I know it is a lot of money to match but like I said Utah should have resigned him for less earlier. Now without Boozer or Korver, Utah has the money to match it, and they will, and should. I believe Matthews is a future Jeff Hornacek, someone Utah has been looking for for years on end and have tried several players. They finally found him, so do not loose him Utah.

As a Blazer fan, I’m actually kind of glad about this.

    1. Pretty much guarantees that Bayless will be gone unless he proves he can play the point (which he won’t).
    2. Versatility to play Matthews at the 2 or 3.
    3. Provides more consistency to the bench and good defense as well.

Obviously the Blazers overpaid, but there have been much worse deals than this this summer. I doubt the Jazz match.

It is such an awful contract for Portland. I like Matthews, but that is just too much money.

So Portland will move both Rudy and Bayless? Paul Allen threw how much money at Pritchard for him to get those two? And to replace their role with a $7 million per year player? Wow.

Why would Utah match this??? If they do, I think Deron Williams should leave…

If they can afford that ridiculous contract they should’ve kept Boozer.

I’d like to see the Jazz keep Matthews. But is he really worth 5 years and 34 mil? I think so. He averaged 13ppg 4.4reb and 1.8stls in 10 playoff games as a rookie.

I’m so confused. If I was the Jazz, you could keep him. They could go get Ronnie Brewer back for half that price.

Portland….What are you doing? Did you not just draft 2 combo guards in the Draft? Man, do they NEED Kevin Pritchard back. Already slippin.

i personally love matthews so my opinion might be biased, but unless the jazz can sign shannon brown for cheap i would match. They dont want Hayward playing so much right away and matthews defense, has intensity and can stroke it. And Reddick, Korver, and Morrow aren’t options anymore.

The contract is frontloaded at 9.2 mil the first year.
