As has been well documented, Bill Simmons has officially parted ways with ESPN. He has undoubtedly been the most influential sports media journalist of the internet era, and revolutionised the interaction between fans, athletes, and the press.

I also believe that he reads this forum. He is an avid follower of anything NBA Draft related, and this forum is probably the only NBA draft related one that appeals to his need to interaction with "Regular Joe’s" who at least have the knowledge to talk basketball on his level.

So what do you guys think he will do…and what do you think he should do?

As for covering basketball, the only real option is TNT or NBA TV and they both seem an unlikely fit.

Bleacher Report will no doubt present him with a number of idea’s, but again this is Turner and I’m not sure of the relationship. Yahoo??? Naah.

He has a passion for Professional Wrestling, so maybe an opportunity exists there? That seeems a long shot though…but the WWE would at least  have the money to throw at him.

Or perhaps he will start his own venture from scratch…but that comes at the risk of starting with a small fan base and investing his own money. Some of the guys on his crew (Concepcion, Lowe etc) would not be on small salaries at ESPN.

So what do you guys think he should, or will do?

P.S. If you’re reading Bill….feel free to chime in with your plan moving forward.

Funny that you just posted this. I just sent Bill an email thanking him for all his good work.

He’s by far my favourite sports writer these days.

Zach Lowe is too smug and numbers-driven, he forgets that sports are supposed to be fun.

Guys like Andrew Sharp are too ill-informed and pessimistic about players to have credibility.

Simmons was the guy that made you think things could get better and you could connect with.

I very much doubt that he reads this forum, but for his sake, I hope James Young pans out like he (and I) think he will.

Yahoo could make a run for him, unless he gets blackballed which is entirely possible. NFL doesn’t like him, and if Disney doesn’t like him, it all depends on how much they dislike him, because they have muscle. That’s how he got fired in the first place.

TNT = Turner. Sports Illustrated = Turner. CNN = Turner. Huffington Post = Turner

I don’t believe AOLTime Warner/Turner broadcasts any NFL games, but I’m sure their relationship with the league is complex.

Also, the law firm for the NFL also represents the NBA, and MLB, and NHL, and the soccer league.

Adam Silver’s father was a partner at that law firm. David Stern was a lawyer there representing the NBA when he was appointed commissioner.

That crappy GM in Minnesota who passed on Curry for the Syracuse kid was also just a lawyer for that law firm. No basketball background, just a lawyer for the sports cabal.

Most of the league commissioners were lawyers at that firm, and as the central committee for all professional sports leagues in the US, they have plenty of power to twist elbows.

If Simmons isn’t picked up by AOL Time Warner, which could make a fortune featuring him on CNN (increasingly entertainment oriented, like cooking shows), Sports Illustrated, Huffington Post Sports, and TNT, you’ll know that something fishy is up.

TNT/AOL Time Warner have super deep business partnerships. TNT runs NBATV, for instance. And league pass makes tons of money for Time Warner Cable.

Adam Silver, being a scion of the sports cabal law firm, could easily dissuade AOLTW from hiring Simmons, on behalf of his sister company, the NFL.

Yahoo makes sense. They’ve been making moves lately under what’s her name.

Simmons/Woj podcasts, Simmons/Woj videos, and create some new fake independent web site under yahoo sports just like Grantland.

I’m paraphasing he said something like if he wasn’t doing what he is doing on ESPN and online, he would be one of those guys on those Celtics or basketball blog sites writing talking about basketball, if was working a regurlar job. This was on one of the Grantland episodes on Youtube.

If he wasn’t such a Celtics homer, he’d be a great OKC Thunder coach.

Withing a week, he’d convince Sam Presti to perform a sign and trade of Kevin Durant for Gerald Wallace, Bass, Jerebko.

    Westbrook for Bradley, Sullinger, Datome.

This is sad news. I really enjoy Bill/Jalen/Jacoby podcasts. Without Simmons I guess they’re going to be OK, but I read somewhere that the management wasn’t really fond of Grantland. Either it will disband or they will hire another Editor in chief who will definitely change things around.

However, I’m not sure how well suited he (or his voice) is to TV, actually. Perhaps some people are better off being read, and not heard.

    Excellent writer, though.

So whats happening with Grantland? Since its a subsidiary of ESPN is he leaving that as well? Or will Grantland be detaching from the ESPN umbrella?

It’s still ESPN’s property but based on how much the higher ups at ESPN hate Bill and are fairly petty I wouldn’t be shocked if they slowly but surely ignore it and give it no real adverisement until it slowly disappears, as their final screw you to Bill.

One of the best sports writers. Enjoyed his book of basketball a lot. I really enjoy his columns and artciles on Grantland. I like Lowe but I can’t seem to find his writing as good as Bills, although I think Zach knows a lot more about basketball. I do enjoy Sharp’s and Titus’s pieces as well.

I also do enjoy Wes Morris and Chris with the movies and TV shows they are good and entertaining. Jalen and Jacoby is also very good. Goldsberry’s stuff is also interesting and are worth good reads.

I would hate to see Grantland go down..
