Last night I realized that the Thunder have the potential to sign a big name free agent this offseason. Firstly, Kevin Martin’s 13 mil comes off the books, as this is th last year of his contracts. Secondly, Kendrick Perkins’ 8 mil can be amnestied. Presti is a smart guy. Serge should be moved up to center, and then they can sign Josh Smith in free agency, with the open space. Thunder become top contenders once again.

    Line-up:

    PG: Westbrook/Jackson/Maynor

    SG:Lamb/Sefolosha/Jackson

    SF:Durant/P. Jones

    PF: J. Smith/Collison/Jones

    C: Ibaka/Thabeet/Collison

Don’t forget about the future lottery picks they’ll get as well

OKC should have around 63M in guaranteed deals next year. If you add 6M for Maynor and Jackson (QO and rookie deal) they will be around 69M (without Thabeet, Thompson, Orton, Rautins, Liggins).

If they amnestied Perkins next summer they will be around 60M… with a salary cap supposed to be around… 60M. I don’t see haw they could sign a FA. They won’t have enough money to bring Josh Smith (even if they get rid of Jackson and Maynor).

Moreover D12’s arrival (and sonn to be extension) in LA makes Perkins almost intouchable. OKC will need him to beat LA even at 9M a year.

Josh Smith would be a nice fit on this team, especially when they face Miami -Durant wouldn’t have to guard LeBron as much and they could run with them better.

I love this trade for the Thunder going forward. Yes it will hurt them losing another shooter, floor spacer for KD/Westbrook, and also a great ball handler who creates for others but he is a luxury. Getting K Mart for the year will bring some scoring but hopefully getting Lamb, the draft picks, and finacial freedom was amazing. Lamb will observe the work ethic of KD/Westbrook and other veterans on the Thunder. I think if he does that he can be even better than Harden due to his length, athleticism, and defensive abilities.

The Raptors will most likely finish so that pick does fall between 4-14 so they will aslo be adding another talented player. Then the Dallas pick. I am not familiar with the protection on that but they should finish so that pick is around 15-23. They could add Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and Gorgui Dieng, a shooter and another rim-protector. Or they could get one of the top bigs with that Toronto pick to replace Perkins. Whatever they do this deal could possibly add a lot of talent.

Big loss for Thunder concerning Harden but I don’t think they would have beat the Heat this year, I don’t think you want to give Harden a max deal, and it is better in the long run for them- giving them a lot of options going forward.

Thunder future is scarier now than before the trade

And if Perry Jones pans out……….

Alos, I think Harden is a great secondary/3rd option but will struggle being the #1 guy.

Math isn’t subjective. The salary cap is $58 million, and probably won’t go up by a significant number next year. The Thunder will pay $44 million for just Durant, Westbrook, and Ibaka in 2013-14. Even if they amnesty Perkins, which they won’t, they are also on the hook for Sefolosha, Collison, Lamb, Jones III, and presumably Reggie Jackson to put them at $55 million. They will also have options on Liggins and Thabeet, but those can be set aside, and will also have the draft picks. There is no cap room.

I think a guy like Granger or Gay would look good with this team. Parsons is ok, but either of these two would be really good to go along with Lin-Harden-Insert PF here-Asik.
