There has been alot of contreversy on who the Top PG in this league is. Alot of people seem to be saying Deron Williams is the best PG, or stick to the normal Chris Paul as there favourite. Many would like to argue that Rondo leads his team to compete for championships every year and as a natural winner is the best PG, others like to praise the explosive talents of young up and comers Russell Westbrook and Derrick Rose.

IMO there is no definitive Top 10, they are all great PGs and I cannot make any definitive choice on whos the best because it is all just my opinion. So I decided to see how these PGs matchup against eachother.

I looked back at all the times they played eachother to see whos stats came out on top, and whos winning percentage was the highest. For example, I recorded the statines everytime Deron Williams played either Oklahoma City, Chicago, Boston, or New Orleans and the same with the other 4 highly regarded PGs.

    These are the averages…

    Deron Williams

    16.1ppg, 8.3apg, 3.3rpg, 1.1spg, W-2 L-4

    Russell Westbrook

    22.7ppg, 8.3apg, 4.4rpg, 2.4spg W-6 L-4

    Derrick Rose

    22.6ppg, 6.8apg, 4.2rpg, 0.4spg W-2 L-3

    Chris Paul

    17.5ppg, 9.3apg, 3.1rpg, 3.6spg W-3 L-3

    Rajon Rondo

    11.8ppg, 11apg, 4.6rpg, 3.6spg W-3 L-2

Does this change anyones perception on who the best is? And who is the best in your opinion?

It seems like Westbrook has usually come out on top in these matchups based on his stats and team record, but imo id still say CP3 is the best overall point guard since he does so much with the least out of any of these other pg’s.

I agree cost, I think Paul is the most rounded PG overall. He just gives you alot of everything and is so efficeint.

Some people disagreed when I said Rondo could easily score more points he just doesn’t have to and its not his job. Today he scored 26 points. However his turnovers were doubled to 6 and his assists were at 7. Can’t do it all (Unless your James). Russel Westbrook is easily the most underrated out of all the top point guards. Rondo doesn’t get enough credit just because his jump shot is faulty. Chris Paul is being forgotten about because of the injuries he’s sustained and everyone saying he’s lost explosiveness. Deron Williams team is having trouble right now so he’s lacking luster. And most would say because of Derrick Roses points and explosiveness he’s easily the best.

Well in all honesty after seeing all these stats, I can’t honestly pick one, to me its a three way tie between Paul, Rondo, and Westbrook. Each one of them is better in one area or another. But god damn if Westbrook isn’t incredible. He runs his team and scores enough for himself.

Also, defense is important as well. And it seems that Deron Williams and Rose are subpar defenders.

I just am fed up with people saying its Williams. No affense it may even be Williams, just to me he doesnt do anything to seperate from the pack. Give credit where its due, dont just say Williams is the best because you see them say it on TV. Head to head with top tier PGs it shows that Williams actaully performs the worst out of the bunch.

Once again Im not hating on Williams just saying…

Honestly, on inside the NBA last year Kenny Smith told Chris Paul straight to his face that because he wasn’t playing and had an injury that Deron Williams was the best point guard. I couldn’t disagree more with that statement. When I actually do take the time to sit and watch Paul play I’m amazed how how easily he finds his team mates. How well he sets screens, and knocks down the right shots that keep his team in the game. And evne if Chris Paul wasn’t ahead of Williams, Rondo is just as good of a play maker and plays better defense than Deron Williams. Williams is a great facilitator and has that game that lulls the defense to sleep and punishes them. But best PG in the league, I don’t think so.

I don think  Rondo is as good as Paul. Paul can do everything Rondo does, and on top of that he can shoot the 3 and midrange shot effeciently. I think if Paul was on Boston he would make that team better due to his range, but if Rondo was on New Orleans they wouldnt even make the playoffs.

Rose is overrated, once Westrbook starts knocking down the 3 like he did the other night (4/4) hes gonna make Rose look llike the inferior gaurd.

I’m high on Rondo a lot. But I say the same thing all the time. Range is a big part of a PG’s game. Its what stretches the defense out on the floor and forces them to guard the perimiter making openings in the paint and else where. So your right about that. I think Paul over all just might be the best Point guard overall. I also agree with the Rose thing alot too. The three point range is now what makes Rose even deadlier. But arguably West brook would be able to do everything Rose can do once he consistently knocks down shots from perimeter as well. And his commitment to defense makes him all around better as well.

Get real man Rondo is not better than Rose. Rose is the MVP of the league right now, he is not below average at defense watch a current game. He is an above average defender now, hes not elite like Rondo, but its not a weakness in his game anymore. Any way if you asked any gm in the league, what point guard they think is better or would want out of the two, and everyone of them would take Rose, even the boston gm….

If you say all around nobody has more triple doubles then rondo and he do it when it count in the playoffs

    D. Rose is all highlights but a good player , the league been hype on him since the summer pushing him with KD to be the best player in the league

Chris Paul is a great player with a media buzz, so he have to be in any convo period but need to get traded so people can see how good he really is

    R. West is young but have a chance to be incrediable

D will is good but needs to show up more in the playoffs

In my opinion, combining statistics with wins, eye tests, and everything else, it seems clear to me Rose and Westbrook have been the 2 best. I dont know why Williams and CP3 are getting the respect from previous seasons carrying over. CP3 has not been spectacular at all this season. Hes barely a weapon. Hes a nice passer, ofcourse, but he is not a threat to score the ball. And Williams’ team has imploded recently, hes had poor body language and isnt taking charge of that team. I think its Rose 1 and Westbrook 2, and then a tiny drop off to the next guy, who might actually be Rondo.

Who the hell thought Rose was the best players in the leage this summer? I watched every Olympic game, and the only thing they said about Rose was that he was a strong cadidate to make the Olympic team and possibly start. When Rose said why cant I be MVP, everybody laughed at the guy thinking hes not near there yet. Well its not until Rose started having the amazing season hes having is what has brought the hype. His PLAY has brought hype, and deservingly so, if you disagree here ya go

    http://www.nba.com/2011/news/features/02/04/race-to-mvp-week-15/index.html

Oh and btw, in what circumstance would you choose Rondo over Rose, one would say in a team that has good players around it and just needs Defense and passing right? Oh sounds a hell of a lot like the fiba team, the one that coach K and the rest of the coaches CUT Rondo and chose Rose and Westbrook. Why? because they are better players…. Williams is up there with those two. And for Paul, honestly I think Paul was on a fast track of being the best point guard of all time before he got hurt, and thats why people have kept arguing for him as the best, but as in terms of right now he just hasnt been the same player and although is still a beast, until he returns to his old form hes not the same caliber as these guys

To be honest WestBrook and Rose have been the two best this year in the regular season. And no Rose is not a above average defender. Go check out what the guy he guards does and you will see at best he is a average defender( better than last season)  i still don’t understand why he isn’t much better as a defender but that is the case with many players that have great athletic ability

Pretty much its all a mater of opinion and there is no clear cut answer. Depends on what you want/need. Back to my comment about the two best int eh regular season, neither can truley be the best untill they have proven it in the playoffs meaning getting past the first and second round IMO

The answer is he is a good defender when he doesnt have to carry the load offensively so extremely. Im sorry Im a busy college student so I cant compile all the data, but in the begining of the season to like midway through the year there was a post on this of someone who did. They did points allowed by other point guards, which yes I know is flawed because the Pg’s arent always guarding the other Pg’s. But Rose gave up less points than the other elite guards over that stretch. I feel like its all about the offense which affects Rose’s defense. During the summer in Fiba play he played great defense, but then although his defensive is still a hell of a lot better than last season, (and ok Quincey average defender) he just doesnt have the tenacity he did in the fiba play. But it is realistic to say that Rose burns more energy on offense than any other player, mainly because he has to and his style of play. But dont you guys think when the Bulls get Noah back and or a SG that can score that his defense will improve just because he has more energy to spend?

Ok not trying to compare Rondo and Rose here but trying to demonstrate my point in there roles. Obviously Rondo is capable of scoring more than he does. Whether he could actually put up over 20 ppg in a season is up to you. But, if Rondo did score more on offense dont you think other areas of his game would suffer? Obviously he wouldnt get as much assist if he looked to score more, but If he spent more energy on offense I believe his defense would take a dip too.

My point is, the holes in both these players I believe can be contributed more to the role on their team rather than lacking skill in that position. When Rose gets help on offense, I believe his defense will immediately improve, not to an elite level like Rondo, but then again even Rondo supporters cant argue that Rondo can score as well as Rose does, thats Rose’s biggest strength and Rondo’s biggest weakness.

Seems everyone is content on saying Westbrook and Rose have been the best, which is fine except for one minor detail. Westbrook has been better, whether or not anyone here would like to agree he has been. he gets more steals, has great perimeter D in crunch time, and as the stats show he WINS big games. All Rose has on Westbrook is his 3 point shooting, and Westbrook went 4/4 from the 3point line in his last game so that seems like it could change soon.

If you guys are content on saying Westbrook and Rose are the best, go all out and just say it. Westbrook is the best. I still think Paul is the best myself…
