Shaq in 2001 was unstoppable. He couldn’t even be defended. A.I. was The Answer. Kobe was dominating at both ends of the floor. Duncan was dominating the paint at both ends. Pierce was The Truth.

That team would be tough to beat in a seven game series. Shaq and Duncan in the paint would be tough to contend with.

I think these aren’t the greatest of examples of teams from each decade/ year. Where is Barkley or Olaujuwon, Stockton, Pippen? Why can’t there be some nice deabate topics like who was the best sixth man ever?..or best player 6 feet or shorter? Most dominant rebounder? I think these things are more interesting topics.

Bill Russell was 6-9 220. And chamberlain was just a beast amongst an era of smaller guys. And let’s not forget they Duncan to deal with as well

I have amazing respect for the NBA’s past players and what they accomplished during their era, but the game evolves and so do the players.  The players are bigger, faster, stronger and more athletic than they were 40-50 years ago. I mean, everything is advanced now.

I guess I just can’t see how a 6′ 9" 220 lb Russell or even Wilt could handle Shaq in his prime.

How is Nowitzki part of hte 2011s? He is still dominant, but on the latter side of his career. If possible, a younger and quicker Dirk could play the 3 along with Duncan and Shaq. If Dirk were on that team with Duncan and Shaq, taht gives you 3 7 footers, slong wiht Kobe and AI. That is the winner. Also , Olijawan over Ewing could also work. but with the teams above, it would be a toss up between ’91, ’61, and 2001. ’91 probably prevails because of the GOAT.

1991 vs 2001

7th season MJ won his first title and was a nightmare to deal with. 5th year Kobe was no punk though… Would he compete with MJ or just get obliterated?

God it would be fun to actually see these teams play each other.  I feel like 61 would be the most well rounded team but 2011 would be able to stick with any group on pure athletecism alone.  In 7 game series against each other all of these would go to game 7 and be nailbiters the whole way.  Great topic really makes you think about how they stack up.

I would give 81 a strong look at 81 being the best. A 6’9 PG in Magic, a combo facillitator/scorer in Bird, two excellent wing scorers in Doctor and Iceman, and a dominant post presence in Moses. How do you defend this team? Who knows.

 i dont feel pierce should be on the 2001 team, he made the all nba 3rd team, i’m thinking someone like T-mac, back in the day he was compared to be one of top guys along with kobe

They’d be tough offensively, but I think they’d get ate up defensively. Magic, Bird and Gervin couldn’t defend.

The game of basketball has changed a lot, as has the level of athleticism in the NBA. The 1971 or earlier teams just aren’t in the same league as the newer teams in that regard. Jerry West was amazing, but he wouldn’t be able to stand in front of an NBA guard nowadays.

As to who would win, I would say 1991 or 2001, if I had to choose one I’d say 2001.

61 or 91, I was tempted to go with 2011 or 2001 but that is probably because I know most of the players and wasn’t alive when either of these teams would have been in there prime.

Actually 61 wins, even Jordan couldn’t beet the insidee combo of Chamberlain and Russell, If super teams were around in the 60’s then these guys may have hooked up.

If you are putting Russell at the PF, 61 wins hands down. You also have Baylor and the Big O on the wings. Are you serious? Baylor got 35ppg and 19rpg when the Lakers went to LA. The Big O I dont even have to recite.

Im surprised 81 isnt getting the respect cuz I rank them 2. Iceman and Doc on the wings with Moses who won the MVP 3 times. And you give me Magic and Bird

I would rethink the Forwards. Bing was only 63  and a Guard. Rick Barry definitely should make the 71 list. He avg 31pts that year and won the title in 75. Cunningham is alright. I would have went for Elvin Hayes but we are picking grapes there cuz they are all great teams

There was a lot of talent to choose from in 1991.  MJ broke out as did Scottie Pippen.  Magic also played that year, and Lary Bird was active.  Isiah Thomas was just past his prime and Clyde The Glide was peaking.

My 1991 team would be: Stockton, MJ, Pippen, Karl Malone, and Hakeem Olajuwon.  Malone played GREAT with Stockton and he also had bigger size than Sir Charles.  I like Pippen’s all-around game better than Nique. That team has the best player ever (MJ), the top assist and steals guy ever (Stockton), the top blocked shots guy ever (Olajuwon), and the 2nd career scorer ever in Karl Malone.  Great defense on the perimeter and wings with a great defensive center in Hakeem to protect the basket.  On the offense you have three of the most-unstoppable weapons ever with MJ’s all-around game, Hakeem Olajuwon’s low-post brilliance, and the Stockton-to-Malone pick-and-roll.  Scottie Pippen’s point forward game, his bank shot, and breakaway steals are another all-time great offensive weapon. 

My 1981 team would be Magic, Dr. J, Larry Bird, Moses Malone, and Kareem.  Three of the best players ever in Magic, Bird, and Kareem plus a great rebounder/inside scorer in Moses Malone to go along with Dr. J’s brilliance.  Not as defensive as the 1991 team but slightly better on the boards with more height in the backcourt. 

That would be the best GAME between any of those decade teams.  Not sure who would win.  In a seven game series, the series would go 7 games.  Incredible matchups between the two best point guards ever, a great center matchup between the two best all-around centers ever (offense, defense, winning, teamwork, class, understated brilliance), the battle of the Malone’s (two of the greatest scorers/rebounders ever in terms of size– 6’9-6’10– and longevity), the fascinating Bird vs. Pippen matchup, and the electrifying showdown between the two best showmen ever in MJ and Dr. J.  By the way, the head coach of the 1981 team is Pat Riley (began as head coach of the Lakers in the 1981-1982 season).  The head coach of the 1991 team is Phil Jackson.  CLASSIC.

You gotta go with the 2001 team if you put T-Mac for Paul Pierce because then you have 2 wings (kobe and T-mac) who both averaged over 30 in a season and they could both shoot ,jump, and defend .And if these all decade teams were playing 7 game serioes against each other Allen Iverson would tear up who ever guarded him besides D-Rose .Now to the big men …………..With Shaq and Duncan wow 2 big time rebounders that could get there 20 points with the best fg%
