rileymcshea3Participant“And with the 17th pick of the 2015 NBA draft, the Milwaukee Bucks select, Trey Lyles”
The Rockets are now on the clock.
Draft order so far
1.Timberwolves: Karl-Anthony Towns
2.Lakers: Jahlil Okafor
3.76ers: D’Angelo Russell
4.Knicks: Emmanuel Mudiay
5.Magic: Kristaps Porzingis
6.Kings: Willie Cauley-Stein
7.Nuggets: Justise Winslow
8.Pistons: Mario Hezonja
9.Hornets: Devin Booker
10.Heat: Stanley Johnson
11.Pacers: Cameron Payne
12.Jazz: Myles Turner
13.Suns: Frank Kaminsky
14.Thunder: Sam Dekker
15.Hawks: Kelly Oubre
16.Celtics:Bobby Portis
17.Bucks:Trey LylesHere are the results of the pick:
Trey Lyles-15
Rashad Vaughn-3
Kevin Looney-2
RJ Hunter-2
Tyus Jones1
Pat Connaughton-1First off I’d like to say thanks for everyone participating in the mock draft, I seriously couldn’t have done it without you all. Next I’d like to hear some of yall comments about the draft so far and the picks made. ( After You’ve made your draft choice clear for this pick).
Id also like to say last pick for the Celtics, Portis won the voting 13 to Lyles 12. There was an error and I’d like to apologize for the many errors I have made. Its been tough doing this everyday, in the summer right after graduating, working, and all other stuff.
Trey Lyles was definitely a steal here at 17. Probably the second biggest steal of the draft so far behind Stanley Johnson to the Heat at 10.

cryan03ParticipantI think Tyus Jones goes here. Houston could not have been happy with Jason Terry and Prigoni at point this post season lol. Beverly is a FA this offseason and I think he could get a decent contract from some team. But I think Jones is a good fit in Houston – he’s good in the P&R which is a strong point for Dwight, he does a good job finding the open shooter which is something Houston has a lot of, and he proved time and time again this year that he can hit the big shot in crunch time which I think is something every team wants in their PG.

Lotto StudParticipantI chose Jerian Grant over the likes of Tyus Jones because no matter whom the projected starter within the Rockets nightly matchups are, James Harden will always be the primary ball-handler in which the team needs to select an "off-guard (PG)" who brings something to the floor aside from being a facilitator.

SmooveKRYPTParticipantSo much better than Jones defensively and better getting all the way to the rim & finishing. The west is loaded at PG, I’d rather have a guy like Grant who can play right now and defend and has the size to be versatile on that side of the ball. There’s also talk they’re trying to bring Sergio Llull over…if that happens, Jones makes even less sense. Give me Grant and take away the risk of possiblty having to overpay Pat Beverly in FA

OhCanada-ParticipantSergio Llull wants to come over and Houston wants to bring them over. They also have a 2nd round pick as insurance to draft a PG.
With that being said I see them drafting BPA or if they do get a gaurd he would have to be a true combo like Grant.
I’m picking BPA Kevin Looney.

ChoppyParticipantJerian Grant. I was gonna pick Tyus Jones here but I talked myself out of it. Jones is a good shooter, can facilitate, but can’t defend much so would be a bit of a liability in the same backcourt as Harden. Fits a need, but not as much as Grant, who is taller, a more effective defender, can probably defend the 1 or 2 in time when he gets stronger. Also a decent shooter and facilitator. Wouldn’t be surprised if they pick Jones, but if I were the Rockets GM I’d pick Grant.

mcgee555ParticipantI feel like the Rockets are fine at point guard. If anything I could see them picking Delon Wright. What was clear at the end of the season and especially the playoffs was that they need a big that can step in and play from the 5 minute mark to the 2 minute mark and hit free throws when "Hack-A-Dwight" happens. I think Looney is very raw and may get pushed around by some bigs, but there isn’t really an alternative at this spot. I honestly think they will trade, but if they do pick, I expect Looney.

Bigger size, that helps defensivley and if Rockets go small with Harden at small forward and J Grant at shooting guard.
They probably want Beverley back, so he is the smaller point guard and for something different off the bench they go with a bigger one.
The Rockets have all their maths and metrics and analysis and want players who can atack the basket and get fouled, and hit foul shots. So Grant should work right with that.
The Rockets could target any position, for a bench player to add to their team. Point guard does make sense, as Beverley was hurt and is a free agent, and Terry is old and a free agent.

cycloParticipantA ball dominant PG isn’t needed here. Tyus Jones isn’t much of a defender and will never slow the taller Curry. The Tyus Jones = Jordan Farmar comparison is accurate. Rockets need a better defender at the PG spot and more offense than Terry/Pablo provided in the playoffs.
Jerian Grant and Delon Wright are better fits here and can play off the ball at 6’4"/6’5" considering the ball will be in James Harden’s hands most of the time. I really like the fit of the 6’5" Wright alongside Harden.
0- Posted on: Sat, 06/20/2015 - 4:32pm #992050
GBeeParticipantAgreed, they need a PG who can play off the ball. That would be Tyus Jones since he’s the best shooter of the bunch. Also, Tyus’ defensive inadequacy is overstated. He was a better defender as a freshman than Jerian Grant was as a senior and he showed improvement as the season went along. Duke’s defense as a whole improved as the season progressed and was a large reason why they went on their tournament run. Tyus was part of that improvement. By the end of the year, he was the better defender b/t he and the senior Q.Cook.
As been said, Rockets are very analytics heavy. Analytics guys LOVE Tyus. Rockets need a shot of IQ, a steadying influence and PG who can hit open 3’s. This is a no brainer pick.

cycloParticipantTyus’ defense projects only mediocre to average at the NBA level. Cannot defend the taller Stephen Curry. Won’t work in a backcourt with James Harden who needs to be paired with an elite defender. Tyus is ball dominant and conventional. That won’t work with Harden either.
Tyus Jones 6’0.25"
11.6 points 3.5 rebounds 5.6 assists 1.5 steals 0.1 block 41.7% FG 88.9% FT 37.9% 3PT 20.6 PER
Delon Wright 6’4.25"
14.7 points 5.0 rebounds 5.0 assists 2.1 steals 1.0 block 50.5% FG 83.5% FT 35.6% 3PT 29.5 PER
Wright is in a rare company of PGs who’ve averaged at least 5.0 rebounds 5.0 assists 2.0 steals and 1.0 block.

GBeeParticipantWho can defend Curry 1 on 1? It really doesn’t matter what dimensions his defender has (I’m talking reasonable PG dimensions, not freakish SFs) because of the nature of his game. He’s not as effective as he is because of his size. Quite frankly, his size is not even good for a PG. Physically he’s not imposing and he doesn’t have good length for his position. It doesn’t matter if he’s 6’3 bc he doesn’t shoot with his head. Tyus actually has a longer wingspan and the same standing reach as Curry. He doesn’t even have a high release on his shot, either from the release point or elevation. What he has is a godlike accuracy combined with one of the quickest releases in the game and the ability to make tough shots in defenders’ faces. His release itself nullifies size. Go ahead and look up how well PGs with size like Westbrook and Wall contain Curry. (hint: they don’t). Schemes defend superstars like Curry well, not individual defenders.
And no, Tyus isn’t ball-dominant. Out of the 3 PGs mentioned in this thread he is the least ball-dominant because he’s a natural distributor who doesn’t pound the crap out of the ball. He gets the ball to where it needs to go and his shooting ability allows him to be more effective off of it compared to Wright and Grant.
