Been putting together some stats over the past couple days, taking a look at the typical make-up of Championship Teams and their PGs. I’ve taken the top 3 scorers for the last 12 NBA Champions, the statistics of that team’s PG, his teams scoring rank, and also the times a PG averaged 20+ PPG in Playoffs and the Teams Result.

    The Numbers (Playoffs Statistics Only):

YR Champion          Top 3 Leading Scorers

-Team Score Rk, Point Guard MPG        PPG                         APG

10 Lakers 1 SG Bryant             2 PF Gasol               3 SF Artest

                    -4th Fisher                  33 MPG                   10.3 PPG                        2.8 APG

09 Lakers 1 SG Bryant             2 PF Gasol               3 PF Odom

                    -5th Fisher                  29 MPG                            8.0 PPG                         2.2 APG

08 Celtics                1 PF Garnett           2 SF Pierce              3 SG Allen

                    -4th Rondo                 32 MPG                            10.2 PPG                        6.6 APG

07 Spurs  1 PF Duncan            2 PG Parker             3 SG Ginobili

                    -2nd Parker                 38 MPG                            20.8 PPG                      5.8 APG

    06 Heat   1 SG Wade              2 C O’Neal               3 SF Walker

                    -4th J Williams           30 MPG                   9.3 PPG                    3.9 APG

05 Spurs  1 PF Duncan            2 SG Ginobili           3 PG Parker

                    -3rd Parker                 37 MPG                            17.2 PPG                        4.3 APG

    04 Pistons1 SG Hamilton       2 PG Billups            3 PF R Wallace

                    -2nd Billups                 38 MPG                            16.4 PPG                        5.9 APG

    03 Spurs  1 PF Duncan            2 PG Parker             3 SG S Jackson

                    -2nd Parker                 34 MPG                          14.7 PPG                       3.5 APG

    02 Lakers 1 C O’Neal               2 SG Bryant             3 PG Fisher

                    3rd Fisher                  34 MPG                            10.2 PPG                    2.7 APG

    01 Lakers 1 C ONeal                2 SG Bryant             3 PG Fisher

                    -3rd Fisher                  36 MPG                   13.4 PPG                 3.0 APG

    00 Lakers 1 C Oneal                 2 SG Bryant             3 SF Rice

                    -4th Harper                28 MPG                     8.6 PPG                 3.2 APG

    99 Spurs  1 PF Duncan            2 C Robinson           3 PG A Johnson

                    -3rd Johnson               38 MPG                   12.6 PPG               7.4 APG

Point Guard Averages              34 MPG                  12.6 PPG                    4.3 APG

Point Guard Averages 20+ PPG since 99 Playoffs and Team Result

-29 Times- (1 Championship, 1 Conf Champ (Kidd) , 5 Conf Finals, 7 Second Rd., 15 First Rd.)

-Tony Parker- 2007- Only time PG averaged 20+ PPG on Championship Team

    12 Years – Top 3 Scorers on Championship Teams – 7 PG, 11 SG, 4 SF, 9 PF, 5 C

Point Guards Average Team Scoring Ranking on Champ Teams – 3.25

Dallas fits perfectly into these trends, getting its scoring from its SG, SF and PF and its PGs as their 4th and 5th scoring options. OKC on the other hand has a shoot-first PG averaging almost 24 PPG.

In the East, MIA (SG-SF-PF, same as DAL) fits the trend much better than CHI since a PG hasn’t led his team in scoring since I. Thomas in 1990 and MIA ended up winning.

With all the great young scoring PGs in the league it should be interesting to see if they can win a ring or if they’ll have to become more pass-first, but The most surprising stat to me was how few assists PGs get, only avg. 5+ four times.

Like Magic Johnson says: "You don’t need to be a great PG to win the championship, you don’t even need to have a great team, you just need to be mentally tough."

I think both the Heat and Mavericks are mentally tough so it should be a great series. Can’t wait for game 1. Go Mavs,

That is very interesting. We talk about how the league is driven by a point and all good teams need a solid point, right, well these stats just proved that wrong. I can not think of a superstar PG, -that was clearly the best player on his team-(eliminating Parker) who won the championship since Isaiah and Magic in the late 80s early 90s. Kidd, Iverson, and Payton came close, but the fact of the matter is that today, that last heave by rose was block by the TALLER defender. I think in some cases, underestimate height in this league.
