KingPapasParticipantHas an All-Star/Super Star ever switched teams and done better individually then he has with his original team?
Example being: Dwight Howard, Carmelo Anthony, and Kevin Love. They were all considered top 10 players at the time of their departure from their respective team and have since took a nose dive as far as super star status and reputation. The saying goes the grass isn’t always greener on the other side. At least, Carmelo Anthony was making the playoffs in Denver now he is on the Knicks, probably regretting the move now.
I’m not talking about James Harden or players then grew into being all stars. Those players moved on to bigger roles that may not have been afforded to them and there for seen their production skyrocket.
The players who were already stars, who just never held the same status from their original team.

machu46ParticipantDoes LeBron in Miami count?

KingPapasParticipantYeah. Completely forgot about that…lol. Was looking at the current landscape of the NBA with disgruntled former All-Stars who were once considered great.

TravelinTravParticipantVery few and far between, only ones I can think of is Barkley, and LeBron ( mentioned above) I know Sir Charles was a couple decades ago, maybe Boozer, Gay, Dragic, Nash, Kidd, T-Mac that’s all I can think of off the top of my head

Sewok15ParticipantGarnett and Ray Allen did well for themselves and their repuatations when they went to Boston although obviously their stats weren’t as impressive.
You could consider Chris Webber who had his best years in Sacramento but that also coincided with his prime and having the best talent around him of his career. It has a lot to do with the timing of when you leave and obviously where you go.
Carmelo should have stepped his career up being that he was 26 when he joined the Knicks…but the only problem is the Knicks have had very little talent around him so he is known as a good scorer on a bad team when if he was in the right situation nobody would doubt that he is a top 15 player in the league.
If you go way back in the day you have tons of examples like Kareem going to the Lakers, Moses Malone coming to the Sixers, Earl Monroe coming to the Knicks and Robert Parish going to the Celtics….notice that all these guys won titles with the teams they joined.

HitsterParticipantBosh went to become part of the Miami Big 3 and gave up personal scoring stats to be part of two titles.
Pau Gasol had been an All Star and was a top quality big man when he was traded from Memphis to Lakers but are we only talking about guys moving via FA.

ItsVictorOladipoParticipantKind of funny that Carmelo is being used as an example of regression by the OP then someone else mentions Barkley as an example of doing better after a trade. Their individual career trajectory is actually somewhat similar before and after being traded.
Sir Charles had his MVP season immediately after being traded to the Suns and made the finals but he actually regressed immediately after that season. The Suns kept winning for a couple more years but his indiviual numbers steadily declined across the board. He made 4 All-NBA first teams with the 76ers but only the 1 with the Suns.
Just like Barkley, Carmelo probably had the best season of his career not long after being traded; his 2013 season was terrific and the Knicks were the #2 seed in the East after Miami. Since then though he has steadily regressed

BiggysmallsParticipantThere’s a difference between going from being the Go-to guy on a decent/not great team like Bosh was to a top-3 team and being the third guy. Thats sacrificing numbers for the sake of team success.
Guys like Melo haven’t sacrificed anything and in the case of Melo, it’s his lack of sacrifice that hurst the Knicks. He took a max deal from NY and is more interested in playing in a big market in the spotlight than actually winning. More power to him though.
If this is a Kyrie discussion, Irving is an idiot if he wants out of Cleveland. He’s not going to be the best player on a winning team and it’s not like he never touches the basketball. It wouldn’t kill him to learn how to play the game without always needing the ball in his hands – become better at using screens off the ball, set guys up with cuts, make quick decisions so that when you get the ball, you are harder to stop, become a really good defender – Irving doesn’t seem to be interested in doing those things to help a team win. He just wants to "get buckets"
