He isn’t campaigning for the job. With his credentials through a stellar coaching career, he doesn’t have to. But asked if he would be interested in the vacant Trail Blazers general manager position, Rick Adelman doesn???t hesitate. “I’d love to talk to them,” says Adelman, fired in April after four seasons as head coach of the Houston Rockets. “I’d be interested in talking to them about any position.” Adelman pauses, then amends his comments. “I have no interest in the head coaching job,” he says. “I need to make that clear. They have a really good coach (Nate McMillan). Nate has done a great job.”

I would say it would be a great hire, but on the other hand I just wonder how long ti will be before he gets fired for being too good or not the right fit

I am not surprised by this.  Rick Adelman’s interest in influencing decisions at the front office had been documented well even during his Sacramento Kings days.

I followed Rick Adelman since his Kings days.  He left the Kings because he was not extended and the same thing happened in Houston.  He didn’t get fired, his contract simply went out and not extended.

Adelman had great relationship with his players and he did a solid job every year.  The biggest reason why he was not retained by the Kings or the Rockets was that he tried to influence the front office decisions too much.  The Maloofs didn’t like Adelman for that but Adelman was a great coach, so they kept him until his contract expired.  Morey and Adelman had different opinions in players transactions, and things didn’t work out, so Adelman was not extended.

Adelman mentioned many times that he wanted to remain in the west coast preferrably staying near Portland where his family is living.  At the age of 64, Adelman would probably enjoy a stay-at-home GM job more than a frequently flyer job.  He also had a root in Portland.
