valentine“It was a concensus. Much like everyone knowing Lebron and Kobe are the best players in the NBA. Everyone just knew. Bottom line, unless you can prove otherwise. Me, C-web, everyone on Draft.net remembers Harper being the new Jordan”
so everyone on here agrees with this. thats what dhamp said and he says he wasnt lying so that means all of ya’ll agree with this..not some not 99percent..all
he says cweb agrees BUT tha its a concensous with nba players and announcers which would mean there should at least be 100 or more that also agree with this
now his come back is that i said harper is only a good offensive player which is what i did say but then i made it a pooint to say i ment thats the only part of his game that could possibly comparable and after much though i disagree with even that statement that i made

quincey hodgesmj has mvps finals mvps, all stars appearrances, all star mvp lead his team to championships not just a piece. all nba first teams. all defense first teams. defensive players of the years. olympic golds
ron harper has none of that yet he was almost as good as jordan?

MagikKnickParticipantLong asssssss title
But i dont think it really matters honestly, regardless of what “might” have happened, he never lived up to to being anything close to Jordan, and this is always going to happen, there will always be a “next jordan” that wont live up to his “next jordan” title

quincey hodgesexactly..thing thing that bothers me is he tried to prove his point by saying everyone on here agrees with him and that many nba players and announcers agree with him. he tries to bring up stats to say harper was almost as good as jordan but what he sseems to not realize is stats doesnt tell you if one player is as good as another. and that harpers stats pale in comparision to jordans

D HampParticipantSuper long title but OK, I won’t even claim liable.
I agreed with another user that Harper was ALMOST like Jordan before he blew out his knee. And he was. And yes it is true, Ron Harper was often considered the FIRST “Next Jordan.” Real basketball fans who remeber the NBA in the 80s will remember this. Ron was a really good defender, even an ACE defender later in his career.
He also shot 50 percent from the field a few times during his early years and could have scored more but he was unselfish. His teammates were all-stars Mark Price and Brad Daughtery. Others were John “Hot Rod” Williams and Criag Ehlo. If he wanted to be a primdona or a jerk, he could have shot 25 times a night, but he didn’t want to.
Also, his defense was superb.

quincey hodgesyet he made zero all star apperances, olympic teams, all nba offense or defense, mvp finals mvp, scoring title…you keep mentioning the cavs team that one wasnt that good and 2 couldnt get past the first round but yet fail to mention when he was with the clippers and was the main offensive weapon he still didnt dominate. theres no way you cant dominate a season but yet be considered almost as good as jordan. the almost comparisions need to be aimed alot lower

D HampParticipantOne last thing. Here is a website that agrees Harper was compared to Jordan. It doesn’t say that he was the first Jordan, but that he was compared. However, real basketball fans know this. I also heared C-Webb say this. And while he was even a better defender later in his career, the begining was any joke either.

D HampParticipantQuincey Hodges: Miner, who was nicknamed “Baby Jordan” for his dunking ability, was never actually labeled/considered the “Next Jordan”.
EVERYONE LAUGH AT Quincey for being foolish. Out off 100 basketball fans, 99 of them knows Harold Miner was once considered the “next Jordan.”
Also, many users on this site may not be old enough to remember Harper playing for Cleveland, but TRUE basketball fans know that Harper was the First “Next Jordan.”

Pistol Pete. The PelicanParticipanti really think this is funny, dhamp and quincey hodges arguing, i mean you are 2 of the people who post actually have substance most of the time and are pretty smart guys when it comes to basketball but, i haven’t ever heard of harper as the next jordan maybe it’s because i’m not old enough but i don’t think it could have been possible at the time i mean jordan was only going into his 3rd year, while harper was going to be a rookie, at that time jordan still wasn’t getting respect so my dad tells me, he was still looked at as an arrogant, selfish ball hog, so I don’t think they would have compared those 2, one because jordan was too young and too harper was a team player, and plus why would people have been talking about ron harper?
wasn;t 1986 the year len bias got drafted and died, I think that would have took uop basketball headlines.

Lemons4LifeParticipantD Hamp is right. Why are you even getting so mad over this Quincey. Just shut up. ( Both of you )
0 - Posted on: Sun, 09/20/2009 - 2:50pm #214337

llperezI started watching in ’92 and I remember hearing a few people talk about how Harper was compared to Jordan. But it was never close between those two and it wasn’t like they were talking about it on the regular.
0 - Posted on: Sun, 09/20/2009 - 2:51pm #214339

GoJOSH HUESTISParticipantyoure right they werent. its just absurd that someone would even compare the 2. when you compare or say one guy is almost as good as the other there has to be a coupel things to compare. to say harper was almost as good as jordan would be saying that he was at least as good as kobe or even better. one thing that makes me wonder if dhamp even watched harper was the shooting percentage thing. early in harpers career he was a very good shooter.. he was a good slasher though and very athletic. he was more comparable to a gereld wallace with better handles if anything or a jason richardson. but he was never a allstar nor considered one of the best defenders in the nba. Yet how can you call him a great defender? and then a great scorer. i dont understand how someone who averaged around 20 a game before injury and never dominated be considered a great scorer
0 - Posted on: Sun, 09/20/2009 - 2:54pm #214340

GoJOSH HUESTISParticipantdhamp is right about most nba players and announcers think harper is almost as good as jordan(before injury) and that everyone on here thinks harper was almost as good as jordan m.3?
0 - Posted on: Sun, 09/20/2009 - 2:57pm #214341
trueone313detroitParticipantMy man was right about harper, If his knees had not gone bad. In addition to the players he had around him, he had Larry nance too, Who could give you 20pts. and stll average 15+ In cleveland. Harp would have been the truth, look at his clippers stats.
0 - Posted on: Sun, 09/20/2009 - 3:06pm #214344

llperezharper was and would have continued to have been a very good player possibly even played in a number of all-star games. But he was never gonna be in the same breath as Jordan. I watched a lot of his games from his cleavland and clipper days, and he was not a take over the game type. He was always closer to being a pippen rather then a jordan.
0 - Posted on: Sun, 09/20/2009 - 3:07pm #214345
quincey hodgesno ones argueing if he was good or not but even his best years stats before injury wasn ton jordans level if you judge a player by just stats. he was never almost on jordans level. he was 27 at that time during his peak before injury and the clippers wre horrible and he still only averaged 23pts max in one of the clipper years then 19 and 18
0 - Posted on: Sun, 09/20/2009 - 3:39pm #214354
D HampParticipantJakarii33, please stop misquoting me. That’s all I ask. For the last time: Most real basketballs fans know that at one point in time, Ron Harper (before the injury) was compared to Michael Jordan. End of story.
I don’t care how good he was or could have been, many had called him “the next Jordan.”
Dhamp..the greatest basketball mind in the world. Next to Hubie Brown anyway.

Henry25ParticipantQuincy u really arent understanding what D Hamp is saying. I believe that he is saying that early in Ron Harpers career, he was compared to MJ because he was a great defender and a really impressive athlete. Ur really just starting to sound like an idiot, and I’m not even a huge D Hamp fan, but i gotta stand up for him on this. He is not saying Ron Harper is as good as MJ. Open ur frickin eyes and read what the guys is saying
0 - Posted on: Sun, 09/20/2009 - 5:22pm #214378

sheltwon3ParticipantI think anytime you mention stuff about Jordan people get sensitive and don’t really hear what you have to say. I read i an article that Jordan was relieved when Harper got traded away to the Clippers because the GM at that time thought he was hanging with the wrong bunch. The Cavs were formidable when he was with the team and even though Michael Jordan Bulls did them end. They were tough games. Ron Harper could do a little of everything and defend. It was the Clippers curse that ultimately hurt him. I hope Griffin is not the same way.
0 - Posted on: Sun, 09/20/2009 - 5:28pm #214381

sheltwon3ParticipantI saw what D hamp was saying and there is a lot of truth to what he is saying. He never said that Ron Harper was as good as Michael Jordan. Also Len Bias who was drafted the same year as Harper was compared to Jordan as well. Some even said Len Bias was going to be better than Jordan which if not for drugs could have happen but it didn’t. Real talk you will hate me but as good as Jordan was his game was not perfect, he just found ways to win and worked harder. He was blessed with great athleticism but nowadays most of the NBA is filled with those players but they don’t work hard or want to win as badly. Harper was a winner too just not on the same level as Jordan. His early years he was the man in a way but got hurt changed his game to better fit a role and won 5 rings with the Bulls and the Lakers. he could have had 6 if he would have stayed with the Lakers for another year I think.
0 - Posted on: Sun, 09/20/2009 - 6:03pm #214393

Henry25Participantu guys are frickin idiots. We are not saying Ron Harper was as good as MJ. But early in his career he was comparable to Mike because of his athleticism and defense. Im starting to think a lot of these people on this website are idiots, if u really cant understand what i just said. There is a difference between saying someone has similar characteristics in their game and saying someone is as good as that person. Ron Harper was one of the first players to catch the “Next Jordan” tag. We all know he never panned out to be close to MJ’s level, but he was compared to him earlier in his career
