Aaron Brooks sprained his ankle saturday night against the Spurs and had to sit out sunday’s win over the T-Wolves ..Rookie Ishmeal Smith got the start..Brooks told a Houston area newspaper that he will be out for 4 to 6 weeks..But head coach Rick Alderman was a bit more optimistic saying Brooks will miss only 2 weeks…Losing Brooks is a big blow becuz Houston is using its offense to makeup for a struggling defense..

He is starting over Lowry? Interesting, I saw the other night he shot 4/16 from the field, playing 35 minutes. I am guessing Adelman must love his defense, because I do not think he is much of a scorer. Losing Brooks is a huge blow, he is really the spark for that Houston team. It must be killing Yao Ming to only play half the game, I am sure that it is beneficial to his overall health, but it has to be hurting him and it is definitely hurting the fans. Houston getting off to 1-5 was not at all what I expected, and things are not looking better now that AB is down. You have to wonder how much longer they will play Yao only 24 pg, because if they played him maybe 30, he would be able to help them out that much more. I also do not know if they have been playing him at the end of games, where he is so dangerous due to the fact that even if he is fouled, he is an excellent free throw shooter. In the current NBA, it is rare to have a Center like Yao that you are not actually afraid might go to the line (Dwight Howard, and of course Shaq are two glaring examples). I really thought Houston would be a play-off team in the West, and I still think there is hope, it just seems like they have gotten off to a pretty poor start.

Yao has also sat two games so far as the match ups didn’t suit him or they were back to back games and Houston must be worried that if they over work him then his injury may flare up again. Yao has just turned 30 and is out of contract next summer so how he goes this year could well decide what he does next summer as he has talked about retirement and if he can only play half a game then any future contract would reflect that because a top player is probably expected to play 35 plus mpg.

The worse thing for Houston could be to overplay Yao and rush Brooks back and they both get injured again and are out long term.

Ish Smith is the best playmaker for others on Houston’s roster, I don’t know if that’s why he’s playing over Lowry (maybe Lowry’s injured too?), but Coach Adelman probably likes his playmaking skills and speed more than his D. I know for a fact Smith isn’t a better defender than Lowry is, and Aaron Brooks has never been a very good defender.

Lowry is injured…But you have to love Smith’s playmaking skills..His offense is not on par right now..
