Knicksboy34ParticipantI think in the NBA, 3 things should tie together…The Draft, HS prospects and D-League.
NBDL- This is one of the biggest disappointment in sports. I think you need to fix the D-League badly. Teams do not need to share prospects with other teams. I think every team should have a D-League team and the NBA needs to promote this “farm system” that they have. I know : If I live in a NBA city, why go to a D-League game? Well, put it in different areas in the state like: New York Knicks (D-League team location : Syracuse.) or even in neighboring states: Charlotte Bobcats (D-League team location :South Carolina) or Phoenix Suns (D-League location : New Mexico or Las Vegas)
The NBA Draft- The NBA draft needs to extend to 3 rounds. I think by extending to 3 rounds, you open up chances for more players to be found. I think also, more teams would scout overseas players and would use a draft pick to let them develop. Maybe, it would even up more opportunities for…………
HS prospects- I think the “One and Done” experiment has failed. I think we should go back to the original rule but add a twist. Allow HS kids to enter the Draft but cannot play in the NBA for 30 games (Those games would be played for the D-League affiliate). I know, It wouldn’t really stop the kids but If you really want to help thier development, give them time against some talent above thier level instead of throwing them into the wolves of the NBA. If money is a huge issue to some HS kids, they will be payed in the D-League.
Tell me what you think, please remember this is all in my opinion.

gedrosolanParticipanti like your idea about the nbdl regarding locations

auberParticipantI think what D-League teams should be is cities worthy of consideration for NBA Expansion. If you can market the D-League in a Sub-Par city then why not make it for consideration for the NBA?

gatorheelsParticipantI agree with everything you said especially the part about teams should not share prospects. Having 3 rounds in the draft would make things more ineresting for me at least. There are at least 90 solid prospects every year so 3 rounds shouldn’t be a problem.

Knicksboy34ParticipantAuber- to answer your question…it’s not about NBA expansion. I think there are fans of the NBA in all 50 states and some kids just wanna see basketball.
As a Syracuse kid, watching SU is cool but i wanna see some more basketball. Having a Syracuse D-League team to me would be fun.
Also, Thanks Gatorheels.

j1232eParticipantinternational players fit it to this though. The only way it would work is if the dleague was a step up from international ball.
If it is then make the draft 4 rounds and each team has an affiliate. would be very exciting, I would even think about going to a dleague game.0 - Posted on: Fri, 06/12/2009 - 1:44pm #162380

auberParticipantSyracuse is a market that can produce a legitimate NBA franchise along with a fan base. I wouldn’t doubt it happening in the next 12 years.

j1232eParticipantdo you see any new teams in the near future? or just franchise movement!

eprizzle14ParticipantI think all those things would enhance the game. They most def need to let highschool kids go to the draft, its a shame, If a team wants to pay you and youre over 18, you should not be denied. What if they put like a first 2 highschool players drafted thing in there every year? 3 roundswould be tight and I think a necessity if they extended the D-league. Probably none of this will happen. Knicksboy34ParticipantJ1232e- I think alot of euro players would come over, I think those younger players would go over (18 and 19 year olds) because it could help them in the eyes of NBA GM’s and coaches… Also, I see some Franchise movement (Kansas City wants a Franchise)
Auber- I agree. I think up here, we have alot of solid guys playing ball in HS. I think having a D-League team up here could help (Maybe some Summer camps and advance training with those guys in the summer?)

Knicksboy34ParticipantAlso, E-Prizzle, I Agree. Most things in the world that makes sense never happen.
0 - Posted on: Fri, 06/12/2009 - 1:56pm #162387
j1232eParticipantIs that I live 15 minutes from a dleague team, I have never gone I have never heard of anybody I know going and the local news nor espn does not cover any d league games. I think I have watched some on nba tv but the point is the nba needs to spice things up a little or it will fizzle away.

Knicksboy34ParticipantWhen it comes to the 3rd round…arent most of them going to the NBDL anyway? I mean, it they are projects…let them fix there game in the D-League.
I’m happy someone brought up my 30 games in the D-League idea. I think if you put them into the D-League it could lessen the blow of a big move like HS to NBA.

Knicksboy34ParticipantJ1232e- I feel you. Thats why the hype of some new prospects and I think the D-league needs to make it a more “Fan- Friendly” game.

The MantisParticipantI like the NBDL idea, as well, and have actually wondered for years why the NBA doesn’t do something like that. It would increase interest not only in the NBDL, but also their NBA affiliate. They should have done something like that from the beginning.
Not sure I like the 3 round draft idea, though. I think that might encourage even more “projects” who aren’t ready to come out early thinking they might sneak in the 3rd round instead of develop their game in college.
The high school idea is interesting. I do like the idea of having them play 30 games in the D league before coming to the NBA. Maybe an additional stipulation would be that no high schoolers would be eligible to be picked in the 1st round. I’m not a big fan of a bunch of high schoolers being drafted every year, because, let’s face it….for every big hit like Lebron or Kobe, there’s a big miss like Kwame Brown or Eddy Curry. It’s a huge risk to gamble your franchise on an 18 year old kid….yes, sometimes it pays off like with Cleveland, but it could also potentially destroy a weak franchise. The kids that come straight from high school would not get a guaranteed contract that way and unless they REALLY needed the money, they would probably decide to go to school for at least a year. The kids that really do need the money would be picked in the 2nd or 3rd round and would still get paid 6 figures if they made the team. That would keep kids like Jennings from going to Europe.

j1232eParticipantthe high school rule, and the one team owns the dleague team. Hire a coach that runs the same plays and teaches the same philosophies. then we might actually see some development. I could watch a better game going to the local gold gym than the dleague players. all the dleaque is to show your stats not improve your game.
0 - Posted on: Fri, 06/12/2009 - 2:12pm #162397

Knicksboy34ParticipantI agree. I think to coach up the D-League teams you need to Hire a former role player to decent players as head coaches. I think Role players will give projects the tools to last long in the league. Decent players could help them increase thier games
Some guys that come to mind are
Sean Elliot
Mario Elie
Kenny Smith
Robert Horry
Kurt Rambis
Nick Van Exel
Micheal Finley
Eric Snow

j1232eParticipantwas pretty lazy, sitting outside the three line most of his career. It still amazes me how he averaged over 10 rebounds a game.
0 - Posted on: Fri, 06/12/2009 - 2:38pm #162426

Knicksboy34ParticipantI know..he’s still playing. But do you agree with my concepts and does anyone has any ideas to throw in?

piratejpParticipantThis was a good thread – nice job Knick. I don’t have anything to add, but good ideas & comments all around.

knicksfan7ParticipantYour ideas on the NBDL I agree with totally, make the NBA more like baseball. The draft does not necessarily have to be extended, just sign guys to nbdl teams so they don’t have to go overseas. As for the high school thing. I like the 1 year in college, would rather have it made to 2 years. Too many guys have been told by an agent oh you’ll be a lotto pick and they get drafted in the 2nd round, these guys need to mature.
0 - Posted on: Sat, 06/20/2009 - 5:43am #169061

Knicksboy34ParticipantYea. I mean some players need to stay in school but they need to know that they can get a chance. 18-19 years old…go to the NBDL and train for about 1-2 months and then you have somewhat of experience.
