valentineWho will win the 2014/2015 Rookie of the Year? And what is your all-rookie 1st team?
I’m picking Dario Saric to win rookie of the year if he comes over. He has the most experience playing against men, winning the Adriatic League MVP. I think he’ll post a rookie line of 14 pts, 7rebs, 4 assists.
My second choice would be Marcus Smart. He’s NBA ready. He will have a good spread of counting-stats, which is worth a lot in the R.O.Y. race because most good players are on bad teams, so assessing the teams record is often unfair. His rookie like will be 15pts, 6 rebs, 4 assists, 2 steals, 41% fg.
Third is Jabari Parker – He could win the award cos he’ll have the green light to shoot, but I think he’ll struggle in his first season compared to the older guys that have stayed in college an extra year. 16 ppg, 8 rebs, lots of fouls, turnovers and low fg%
All NBA 1st Team
G – Marcus Smart
G – Gary Harris
F – Jabari Parker
F – Dario Saric
C – Nerlens Noel (He’s been carrying a chip on his shoulder since draft day last year. I expect a hungry beast).
Finally, before you get tempted to criticise my predictions, remember that we’d much rather see some of your own.

chaParticipantI get the logic of picking the most experienced but keep in mind; like most of the rookies his game needs to adapt to NBA basketball: run, jump and ISOs. Scouts said he is limited offensively because of his foot speed and general quickness; he plays like ‘Melo in the Adriatic League because he is quick enough to get by slower players; howeve, it is difficult to see a matchup for him that he will outquick in the NBA. I’m sure that when and if he gets enough minutes to contribute significantly it’d be the same time he adapted his game over.
My pick for the ROY is none other than Andrew Wiggins; kid is going to flourish in the open court, just throw it anywhere near the rim. He’ll also get a chance to showcase his potent slashing ability because when his jumper is on, you have to closeout and he attacks to relentlessly. He will get minutes simply because of the fact that the guy can play defense. I see a very bright future for this young man. He just needs to improve on some things. Projected averages: 19 PPG 4 RPG 2 APG 2SPG AND 1BPG.

Rip255Wow, I really can’t see Wiggins coming in and averaging 19ppg. I just think that for every 20pt game he gets, he’ll also get an 8pt game.
Only rookie I can see flirting with 20ppg is Jabari Parker.

chaParticipantI really don’t see how people are undervaluing this guy so much. He may be inconsistent; but I think it is a byproduct of his ball handling skills or lack thereof. He can’t manage to get good shots consistently because he does not have superior shot creating skills. And when his jumper his off, he tends to be passive. In the NBA, he will be able to showcase that athleticism, I don’t think I’ve seen a player with his kind of athleticism in the wings since LeBron himself. He just needs to handle the rock better and may be add a little more strength but other than that, I’m sure 19 PPG for him is going to be possible. I can see him starting in the NBA and averaging 30 mins a game because of his defensive abilities and the fact that the team that will draft him will most likely be bad.

machu46ParticipantI think 19 is a stretch, but I do honestly believe Wiggins could average around 15-17 as a rookie. Maybe not on great efficiency, but I think between fast break opportunities, second chance opportunities, and some spot ups, he can average around 15-17.

max23Participant19 ppg is possible…what do you project his fg%,3fg%,fga and fta per game will be?

Rip255Rookies in general struggle with shooting percentages but I think he’ll get 12-14ppg at 44% fg which is impressive. I just don’t think he’ll be a high usage player in his rookie year. He’ll be a 3rd option on offense and will come out relatively unassertive. I think he’ll play OK defense at first, and that will develop into a serious strength down the track.
I get the feeling Marcus Smart has the confidence to come out gunning and I think people are too apprehensive about Saric. I think that guy can ball…The Adriatic League is one of the top pro leagues in Europe. To win MVP is a good accomplishment.

OrserParticipantI think Parker is probably the frontrunner. He’s got a good chance at becoming the lead scorer for the team that picks him, so I think he’s also likely to lead all rookies in ppg. Whatever you think of Parker, he seems likely to put up some pretty impressive traditional stats.
I’d say Nerlens Noel is the second most likely RotY. Unlike most of the other rookies, he’s almost guaranteed to be a starter who plays heavy minutes. Being a part of the Sixers for a year should help Noel adapt to the NBA game faster than other rookies.
For third, I’d put McDermott, who I think probably has the best chance at being an important contributor on a winning team in 2014-2015. His long-range shooting will find him a role somewhere, but his relative lack of upside will keep most of the bad teams from drafting him.

nick5354ParticipantA bit to early to tell for me. In many circumstances it depends on team drafted to.
Who ever gets drafted into a good situation, starting at their position, big minutes usually has a high probability of winning the award. I really hope Parker doesn’t get stuck behind anyone, I really think if he starts and plays solid to earn big minutes he could really have one of the better rookie years in term of scoring. His game is NBA ready.

DukeDaSquadParticipantYou guys are sleeping on Nik Stauskas. He has a similar game to his former teammate Tim Hardaway Jr and therefore I can see him having a similar impact as his former teammate in his rookie season but hes a much better shooter than Tim.
Also, obviously Jabari Parker

Hector_Reyes_8ParticipantJust because Hardaway has a chance of getting it this year doesn’t mean Nik will next year with players that actually have the potential to start on teams.

Rip255I dunno about Stauskas. Surely he doesn’t have enough game for ROY?

FourParticipantIt’s fun to make predictions at this point but so difficult before you know the teams these guys end up on. ROY often goes to either a guy who puts up numbers on a team that improves significantly or, in the absence of a candidate who fits that criteria, a guy who puts up big numbers on a bad team…I’m looking at you, MCW or Victor O. Given that I’d give the Lakers pick a good shot – if they don’t move into the top 3 I could see them getting Exum, Smart, Vonleh, etc. and paired with a healthy (OK, healthier) Kobe that team could win a lot more games. And if they move into the top 3 someone like Parker could be a no-brainer.
That aside I could see Randle being the guy. Scoring, ball handling and shooting percentage sometimes take time to develop. But guys can often board from Day 1. I could see him averaging 14/10.

festar35ParticipantNumber in my books is Jabari Parker. He has the tools to come in and score right away and the likely team that he ends up on will really on him for his scoring and give him that opportunity.
The rest I feel the situations will dictate, but I honestly believe Randle will be an impressive rookie, he is a good scorer and hard worker on the glass as well.

Magic JordanParticipantI got Julius Randle winning it. He will be a double double machine from day one and I am one of the few that believes the open court of the NBA will only help him even more. His size and athleticism tells me that he will be a TERROR in the open court. I could see him averaging 14-15 ppg and 9-10 rebounds which should be awfully close to getting him ROY.
