Tim49461ParticipantTime after time top recruits across the nation are not even considering Michigan State as a option.
Michigan State had its chance at such recruits in 2014 class as Tyus Jones, Jahlil Okafor, Kevin Looney, Karl Towns, Devin Booker… The list goes on.Yet Tom Izzo is unable to pull in a single one. The whole 2014 recruiting class is banking on a 3 star PG and the hopes Cliff Alexander picks MSU.
So the question I ask is, Whats wrong with Michigan State? Why are recruits shying away at a team that has been to the final four every 4 years. Top 25 to nearly top 15 team each year.
Some perks of the school
-Amazing dorm options for all recruits
-One of the largest and hands down most beautiful campus you will see.
-A Fanbase that rivals that of Kentucky and Duke.
-A legend for a Coach
-History of great players
-Top notch arena
-Many moreSomething has got to be done and start pulling in these high profile players. But what has to be done?!

SiggyParticipantIzzo doesn’t make promises and makes his players earn everything. They also play a tough, physical, grinding style that doesn’t really appeal to most 5 star recruits these days. Why go to MSU and earn your keep when you can be given things (guaranteed starting spot, big minutes, star role, etc) upfront elsewhere? I wish more players would go play for him because I think he’s a really good teacher and person in general, but his no-nonsense, make-players-earn-everything approach works against him in recruiting, especially in this era where every 5 star player thinks he is and should be a 1 and done-r.

goldie92689ParticipantThere is no problem with perennially developing 3 and 4 star players in great college players and pro prospects. If 5 star players don’t choose to play for Izzo, well, that is their loss.

esperanzafleet69Participantgary harris was a 5star recruit. #11 overall #2 sg i believe.
michigan state always tends to get good recruits idk what you’re talking about.. adrien payne was also a 4star and #26 in the espn top 100.

Tim49461ParticipantThey do get the Gary Harris Players, The Adrien Payne players. But 1 or 2 players doesnt make it a rule it makes it a exception. There is no constant flow of talent entering.

esperanzafleet69Participantkeith appling, branden dawson, denzel valentine, all 4 star recruits.. and will probably all be really good ncaa players. that seems like a constant flow of talent to me. not to mention their record speaks for itself.

Tim49461ParticipantDenzel was a 3 star out of Lansing Sexton. Once he was signed everyone thought he would be a bench player like Russel Bryd( Who? Exactly). These player turned into good players after the tutelage of Izzo. Payne didn’t even contribute until last year. Nix was carrying that load. Appling has struggled to live up to his ranking ever since he stepped on campus.
Again these are good players, but MSU doesnt get the great players. The 1 and Done. The program changers, the instant National Championship contender players.

SiggyParticipantMSU is a place for 2-4 yr players, not 1 yr players. Izzo wants and expects players to improve. If he doesn’t think a player is ready for the next level he’ll encourage them to come back, unlike other coaches who’ll push kids out the door whether they’re ready or not. His rep is earned, but he’s known as a coach who keeps his players and tries to improve them instead of pushing them out the door. That’s not that attractive to kids who see college ball as a weigh station, who’s priority is leaving ASAP as opposed to improving and being better equipped for the long term.
He’s swung and missed a lot on the recruiting trail but he’s shown that he can compete for chips with 3 and 4 star players. The issue that I see the past couple of yrs is that he’s missing on a lot of middling 4 star players too which could be an issue in the near term. He might have to hit up the juco and transfer wire soon. It would be nice to see guys like him getting multiple 5 star players every yr because I have no doubt they’d leave the program as better players, but I don’t think he really needs program changers every yr. Leave that up to the coaches who can only “coach” talent.

samosasParticipantThere’s a change that’s only happening now and that is college is no longer worth the money. It’s going to be hard to entice someone to put in the amount of work you have to do to be an athlete in college and when you get out you have a degree that will not land you a job. Sure, you got your degree paid for but why not see if you can make a real career in the NBA? Or, just play a year or two and meet some people and make a little dough. I believe the NCAA is criminal and abusive telling players who they can and can’t talk to, what gifts they can accept, etc. and seeing the fact that a four -year degrees these days is a waste of money for most majors I’d encourage them to explore other options. I’d hate to think coaches are encouraging people to stay for their own benefit.

esperanzafleet69ParticipantIve lived in Michigan my entire life and have never heard something as ins
ulting as this about my state. Detroit isn’t bad at all downtown, But obviously there are rough areas there.Compared to places like new jersey and new york, or really anywhere out east, its basically great. Lots of lakes rivers and forest. The upper penninsula is one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever been as well.
For the record, LA and NYC are, in my opinion, both way dirtier than Detroit. And I’ve been to both cities within this past year.

BasterdInABasketParticipantHow about this.. Every player that has signed under Izzo and stayed four years has been to a Final Four. Yes it is fun to watch some elite incoming prospects but if I was a MSU fan, recruiting would be the last thing I would be concerned about.

Velvet HoopParticipantYou said it yourself “team that has been to the final four every 4 years. Top 25 to nearly top 15 team each year.” Most teams would sell their soul for that kind of track record. Seems like they have been doing just fine without the divas to me.

BothTeamsPlayedHardParticipantIf you aren’t upset with the results Izzo is getting on the floor with the recruits he is bringing in, then why are you bothered by the decisions for players who go elsewhere?

SiggyParticipantHe’s been also missing on quite a few core guys that the program is usually built on. If they don’t sign a decent name by the spring quarter that will be 2 weak classes in a row for Izzo.
