WITNESS2014ParticipantEarlier today me and my friend were talking about who are the top 5 point guards in the NBA. I had Russell Westbrook in my top 5. My friend had the same as me but he had Deron Williams instead of Westbrook. This isn’t about who’s a better pure pg. Its about who’s a better player overall now. After seeing how the thunder went down against Memphis I cant help to think of how they would of won had they had Westbrook. I would like to see what the rest of you think of who is the better player.
12/13 stats
Westbrook- 23.2 ppg, 7.4 apg, 5.2 rbg, 1.8 spg, 438 fg%, 3.3 TO a game, PER 23.98
Williams- 18.9 ppg, 7.7 apg, 3.0 rbg, 1 spg, 440 fg %, 2.8 TO a game, PER 20.38* Just want to see your guys opinions I know this is pointless but for the sake of our disagreement I would like to see what you guys think. Thank you.

JoeWolf1Westbrook without a doubt, he is so distruptive and such a force on the court his impact is undeniable. DWill is a more classic PG with better intagables, and a nice offensive game, but Westrbook is an elite player in this league. DWill is just a very good one.

SubZeroParticipantWestbrook, no question. Williams is the better 3 point shooter and commits a little less turnovers, but IMO Westbrook is better at everything else. Midrange shooting, rebounding, defense, playmaking (although this could be argued either way), and way more athletic. I think Williams is at the end of his prime, while Westbrook is just entering into his and definitely has potential to be the best PG in the NBA.

GottaBeTheShoesParticipantD Will has gotten worse and worse lately, I don’t even consider him probably Top 7 or 8 or so.

aivsdirkParticipantare we comparing their overall games or just them as point guard, i thought that was the question. dwill did slack at the beginning of the reg season and had a bad game in the playoffs but as far as point guard skills go, dwill better passer lower turnover rate. dwill also doenst go for 2 min stretches of the game where he doesnt pass to anyone. russell is a top 10 overall player but dwill is ahead as a point guard. Switch teams and dwill would score same amount of pts as westbrook and have 10+ assist. i think ibaka and durant would like more touches. russel on brooklyn he still leads them to the playoffs but everybody eles’s stats and touches go down.

aivsdirkParticipantyou said you discussed top 5 point guards, i went off of that. you also specifically wrote better player not overall player check again that why my debate related to specific point guard qualities.

WITNESS2014ParticipantThanks to all of you for putting your opinions of this debate on here. I don’t even think it was close but I just wanted to see what you guys thought. IMO Irving, Rondo, Rose, Paul, Parker, Westbrook are all better than dwill. Holiday, Wall, Curry, Lilliard are either better or will be better within a few years unless Dwill can turn back the clock.

aivsdirkParticipantin my post i put russell top 10 overall but dwill is a better pure point guard. i answered your question. i just did it in my way go back and look at my 1st post. i only spoke on who was a better point guard because you brought up the fact you were discussing your top 5 point guards as the thesis for this debate, i had to address that. had you not done that i would have simply said russell overall, dwill better pg. plus your describing what specifically the debate was about is vague. This isnt about who is the better pure pg. its about who is the better overall player now sounds like your opinion towards your friend, not what we should consider in answering the question. why so angry responding? Coma esta?

DolanCareParticipantWestbrook’s defense and rebounding aren’t discussed as much as they should be. I would argue that he is the best rebounding guard in the game today. And defensively he can be a terror when asked to be.
It was fun to see James Harden shine in Houston this past season, and the Thunder definitely miss his scoring and playmaking abilities. That being said, it is hard to ignore how much of a defensive liability Harden is- especially compared to Westbrook.

Ghost01ParticipantBulls vs Nets, Eastern Conference Quarterfinals 2013
All you need to know to pick Westbrook…the fact Deron couldn’t lead his team over a ridiculously overmatched and banged up Bulls team is a joke.
