After being in Vegas the last couple of days they would be perfect for an NBA team. Bring them in, bring back the Sonics & move Memphis and Minnesota/New Orleans East.

    2 x 16 team conferences. 8 x 4 team divisions.

    78 games:

4 games vs your division (12)

    3 games vs conference (36)

2 games vs other conference (30)

Should have said move Memphis, Minnesota or New Orleans – it’d likely be Memphis.

    Pacific: Seattle, Portland, Minnesota, Utah
    California: Clippers, Lakers, Warriors, Kings
    Mid: Denver, Oklahoma, Vegas, Phoenix
South: Dallas, San Antonio, Houston, New Orleans

Atlantic: Toronto, Boston, New York, Brooklyn
    Mid-East: Chicago, Milwaukee, Indiana, Detroit
    Mid-Coast: Memphis, Washington, Cleveland, Philadelphia
    South-East: Miami, Atlanta, Orlando, Charlotte

I think most of your thoughts are spot on. However, there were a few things with the new alignment that made me laugh. Minnesota in the Pacific? Toronto in the Atlantic? Minnesota would be 1200+ miles from their closest divisional foe and are less than 400 miles from both Milwaukee and Chicago, which are both natural regional rivals. Toronto is only a few hours from Detroit and Cleveland and much farther from the other teams than Philly. IMO, needs to be a bit different.

Here is a simple fix to that:
Northwest: Seattle, Portland, Golden State, Sacramento

Southwest: Lakers, Clippers, Las Vegas, Phoenix

South: Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, NOLA

    Midwest: Denver, OKC, Utah, Memphis

Northeast: New York, Brooklyn, Boston, Philadelphia

    Central: Toronto, Detroit, Cleveland, Washington

    North: Minnesota, Milwaukee, Chicago, Indiana

    Southeast: Orlando, Miami, Atlanta, Charlotte

The names were only for my reference really, I don’t live in USA & wasn’t 100% certain of everything.

I do like the idea of NY, Bkn, Bos & Philly in same conference that be awesome, but I’d love to keep GSW along side the Lakers, Clips & Kings.

They wanna keep Toronto travelling lol. For Philly it doesnt really matter much if you put them in Central or Atlantic. Although I must say I would love to see Toronto get out of that division, its gonna be a nasty one for years to come with Phillly and Boston.

One more correction – 80 games (32 vs non-conference opponents)

I think the way to go in this scenario would be to go back to 4 bigger divisions of 8 teams, rather than 8 small divisions of 4.  With the 6 divisions of 5 we have now we’ve already essentially eliminated the importance of divisions altogether.  I think that having fewer divisions would make winning a division title important again so that we might want to reward it again with a guaranteed top 2-4 seed in the playoffs.  This is how it was before there were 30 teams as a frame of reference for the young folks.  Here’s how I’d suggest doing it:

    EAST:

Atlantic: Boston, Brooklyn, Charlotte, Miami, New York, Orlando, Philadelphia, Washington
Central: Atlanta, Chicago, Cleveland, Detroit, Indiana, Milwaukee, Minnesota (moved East), Toronto

    WEST:

Midwest: Dallas, Denver, Houston, Memphis, New Orleans, Oklahoma City, San Antonio, Utah
Pacific: Golden State, L.A. Clippers, Los Angeles Lakers, Las Vegas, Phoenix, Portland Sacramento, Seattle

Interesting thought. I like the reformatting as it is crazy that some teams like Memphis and New Orleans are in the West. I don’t imagine the league expands anytime soon.

Make a couple new franchises, relocate a couple teams and voila, you have my masterpiece! 4 divisions of 8 teams (East, North, Mid-South, West). Top 4 of each (or top 3 of each with a couple wild cards) make playoffs. More division games so there is less travel and more rivalry.

    East:
    Boston
    Philadelphia
    Washington
    Miami
    Charlotte
    Brooklyn
    Orlando
    New York

    North:
    Toronto
    Indiana
    Milwaukee
    Minnesota
    Detroit
    Cleveland
    Chicago
Pittsburgh/Louisville/St.Louis or keep Atlanta (sorry Atlanta, you’re kind of in a location gap and your attendance sucks)

    Mid-South:
    Houston
    Oklahoma City
    San Antonio
    New Orleans
    Denver
    Memphis
    Dallas
Kansas City/Albuquerque or keep Atlanta (again, sorry Atlanta..)

    West:
    Golden State
    Utah
    Lakers
    Portland
    Clippers
    Phoenix
Sacramento (possibly moved to Seattle or Vegas)
    Seattle/Vegas

    That’s the best I got!
