I made a comment on this but wanted to disucss it in its own thread and not take over forum with the topic.

So, just by going by the eye test I cannot help but think Tyus Jones reminds me of Mike Conley.

They both have similar size, crafty, know how to run an offense and can do it without being turnover prone.

So I thought I’ll look into the stats and they are statiscally pretty similar.

    So basic infomation:

    Tyus Jones: 6’1, 190 pounds

    Mike Conley: 6’1 180 pounds

    Freshman year stats:

    Tysus Jones: Pts 11.3 | FG% .431 | 3% .403 | FT%.873 | Reb 3.5 | Ast 5.3 | Stl 1.3 | TO 1.7

    Mike Conley: Pts 11.3 | FG% .518 | 3% .304 | FT%.698 | Reb 4.3 | Ast 6.1 | Stl 2.2 | TO 2.2

Both also played exatly 31.6 MPG

I am a bit rushed so I have only found basic stats and details on both players.

Mike Conley is a underated PG player due to the massive amount of talent in the PG position, so it will be a difficult task to become as good a player as Conley is.

    Anyone else with me?

Mike Conley was thought of as a reach if I recall as most people were paying attention to Greg Oden, Jones has the shadow of Okafor cast over him as well.

Just a non stat related comparison.

Also both players were/are not seen as NBA ready.

Nice pick up on the Oden/Okafor observation.

I see some similarities to a young tony parker as well. He’s gonna be a hell of a player at the next level, regardless of where he gets drafted.

I haven’t watched him pay enough, but I have a question,is he or does he even have a single chance to be as good as Conley defensively?? Don’t get me wrong I was impressed as well, especially because he absolutly does not play like a freshman. But I Wonder how he would fare on defense aganst NBA caliber guys. Just a queston for the NCAA junkies here.

Mike is has more change of speed and is more deceptive, he also is a lefty who can finish with his right. that makes a huge differnce in the two but love the comparison

I could also compare him to another Tyus — Tyus Edney.

Jones has better freshman year stats, but Tyus Edney had similar stats as a sophomore compared to what Tyus Jones is doing this year at Duke.  Looks like Edney didn’t get many minutes as a freshman at UCLA.

Tyus Jones (Freshman): 11.3 points, 3.5 rebounds, 5.3 assists, 1.3 steals, 1.7 turnovers

Tyus Edney (Sophomore): 13.6 points, 3.5 rebounds, 5.6 assists, 1.3 steals, 1.3 turnovers.

Jones is taller with Edney listed at 5’10.  Neither guy is HUGE though.

    Could be a good omen.

Tyus Jones taking it to the rim and the heart of the UNC defense for driving layups last night reminded me of Tyus Edney going coast to coast, hitting the buzzer beater over Missouri in the Sweet 16.

Another good omen: UCLA won the title that year (over a loaded SEC team) even though Tyus Edney was out with an injury.

Tyus Edney was a second round pick and only played 3 years in the NBA but he did average 10.8 points, 6.1 assists, and 1.1 steals as a rookie and named to the All Rookie 2nd team.
