HobbyOGParticipantTo be far, what other choices do the Mavs have?? I don’t see any additional FA’s kicking down the door to play for the Mavs.

rvan14ParticipantThere is a great NBA rumor show on youtube discussing DJ to Mavs.
youtube.com/watch?v=wCBueyR21Hg
The video talks about the Mavs sending Wes Matthews and a huge trade exception of 7+ million. Mavs after adding DJ would still have close to 25mil in cap space.
Smith Jr, Doncic,Barnes,Dirk,DJ and maybe Jabari Parker?

SeattleSuperChronicsParticipantI feel like Cuban sees DJ as a Tyson Chandler type player and he is just trying to recreate their championshup success.

BasterdInABasketParticipantDirks a shell of his former self obviously but I would like to see him in the playoffs again. Feel like I haven’t seen Dirk play in a meaningful game since his championship

OhCanada-ParticipantDeandre Jordan would make Doncic’s life so much easier. A constant lob threat, underrated pick setter and guy that really cleans up defensive breakdowns as a help defender. This team will be very good.
Barnes and Doncic can play SG, SF and PF in certain situations. Offensively Smith will be able to play off the ball and also be a secondary ball handler while defending smaller gaurds. Finney-Smith, Barea and Powell are decent role players that can fill the gaps. Brunson should be able to play both gaurd positions and was a steal in the 2nd round.
They really should also resign Motley. I feel like his upside is through the roof and he would be a great compliment for Jordan playing alongside or replacing him.
The Wesley Matthews contract is kinda crippling but will be off the books next year as well. I really want to see this Mavs team do well and they are just a couple pieces away from being a special group.

Jr. ROXASParticipantCouple of reasons why I think the Mavs want to win:
1) Cuban and Carlisle hate tanking. They as pretty much forced to tank this season even if he didn’t want to. Cuban had such a winning culture for the past decade or so that losing badly for the past 2 years just doesn’t sit well with him or Carlisle who rarely has a losing record too.
2) He wants to do right by Dirk. It’s Dirk’s last season and for everything he’s done for the franchise, I think Cuban would want to repay him by having him experience a winning season again. He agreed to be paid at a discount at 5 million a year which is absurd, only to be mired in 2 losing seasons within that contract. Now at the last year of his contract, everyone from fans, players and management alike I think would want to do right by him.

SmooveKRYPTParticipantYou’re underestimating how much easier a great screener/roll man like DJ makes the adjustment for playmakers like DSJ and Doncic.
If it’s an opt-in and trade it makes a ton of sense for Dallas. They traded their pick next year, so not attempt to win in Dirk’s last season. Also it rolls over their cap space to next summer instead of giving out a long-term deal now to a C…they’d have Wes, Dirk, DJ, and JJ all coming off the books and be left with pretty much rookie contracts and Powell. Then they could go after free agents/trades for players who better fit the timetable of their core.

MopgrassParticipantWhy would the Clippers take on Wes Mathews? Maybe to more fully tank. They are about to return to the Clippers I’ve always known. They were born the day Blake Griffin showed up and died the day he left.

HitsterParticipantThe Clippers pulled together as a team and played as well after Blake left as when he was there last season plus they freed up long term cap space and got an additional pick out of it. If DeAndre was to leave for nothing they may see what they would get for him opting in. Taking on Wes Matthews’ salary may seem strange but a nice $7 million trade exception could be turned into an additional first rounder.
Dallas for all it’s success in the Dirk era, a top coach, proactive owner and good front office haven’t been a major FA calling point in recent years. So having traded a pick away next year outside of top 5, they want to get better. Plus if they could flip Matthews plus sweetners for Jordan it’s a great deal.
Jordan is a quality big man and with Barnes gives them experienced level top starters any future top FA would like as well as Smith and Doncic’s upside.

khaled_a_dParticipantWith next year pick belonging to Hawks (unless we get super lucky) what other options do we have?
We have put all our eggs into the Doncic basket in the draft night at least for next season, we need to be competitive because we have no other option really. We need a C, we need rebounding, we need defense and DJ checks all that. If and only i we can get him through a trade around Wes he is perfect for the job, one year without compromising cap space, see what we have and assess next summer what we do with him and the cap space etc
I am against signing him on 3-4 years deal in FA if he opts out. Also if we can get Jusuf Nurkic away from Blazzers I would take him over DJ.
At least, DJ is healthy unlike Cousins
