Ibaka is my hands down pick for DPOY, leading the league in blocks per by a large margin. It’s routine for him to have 6, 7 blocks on any given night. Do you think this is just a good year, or are we seeing the beginning of the next great shot blocker? Will Anthony Davis be a better rim defender than Ibaka?

I haven’t thought about DPOY in years because Dwight was a shoe-in. I wouldn’t argue against Serge Ibaka Flaka Flame

I think he needs to be getting more playing time, I mean imagine if he was getting 30+ mpg, we’d be seing a historically great blocking season from him.

I think he’ll improve next year, he might get up him bpg to about 4 or he might focus on his offense more, I’d be happy with both.

I think Howard shouldn’t be getting the DPOY this year, so it’s between Ibaka and Chandler to me.

I wonder has coach Brooks talked to Ibaka about working on a post game..He’s already 1 of the nba’s premiere defenders and if he can add give them some low post scoring that what make them extremely dangerous..And erase the label he has as a 1 dimensional player….It isnt until Harden checks in to replace Thabo,to play with Durant,Serge,Perk & Westbrook ,that the team excells and get into a real flow…

Anthony Davis versatility will make him the most unique shot blocker this league has ever seen..Becuz most great shotblockers only block shots at the rim..Davis can go out on the perimeter and do it…And i wouldnt be surprised if he’s in the top 3 in rebounding as a rookie….

I would give the award to LeBron, but anytime a guy averages nearly 1.5 blocks more than 2nd place it is definitely worth recognition.

LeBron should win the MVP, one player rarely gets both the MVP and DPOY (was Hakeem the last one to do it? And before him I think it was Jordan)

The DPOY is almost a reputation type award.  Tyson Chandler has a been a very good low post defender for years so he is the favorite going in.  But Serge Ibaka is on the radar.  LeBron James has been good too but I don’t see him winning both awards in the same year.  Those are my top 3 with Tony Allen being fourth.  I see Tyson Chandler winning it though.

Dwight Howard embarrassed himself with all that drama so he loses a bunch of political points.  The DPOY is as political an award as the MVP, or moreso since defense is a lot more subtle and features less stats.

… Anthony Davis has the potential to be a great defensive force.  When he bulks up he will be a good man-to-man low post defender as well as a weak side shot blocker.  AD would make a perfect DPOY candidate.  He is long and active with a high motor and a high Basketball IQ.  He can guard some different types of guys and shut down the lanes.  Plus, he gets the showy defensive stats like blocks, steals, and even rebounds.

I am really unsure of why anyone does not see Ibaka as the DPOY.  He’s a beast every single time I watch their games (and OKC is on nat. TV like once a week).

Would have been Dwight if he didn’t screw up this season with all that drama. While he’s injured, I think the Magics would allow as many point as a team with the last place defense would or fg%

But this year, I think either Tyson Chandler, Serge, or Lebron will win the award.

It’s going to come down to LeBron, Dwight, Ibaka, and Tyson Chandler.  I don’t think anybody else is really in the conversation.

I’d give my vote to Kevin Garnett.  He brings everything Chandler does, but with more versitility.  I think he’s a better pick and roll defender, and he’s revived his career in sliding to the C and taking on centers in the post.

I like Serge, but he’s a Theo Ratliff clone IMO.  Which is great, Ratliff was a premeir shot blocker and a guy who made All-Defensive teams, but Serge is more of an elite rim protecter and not as well rounded as some other guys up for the award.  He also only pulls down 4.7 defensive rebounds per game at the PF position.
