How much of UNC’s struggles are on Roy this year?  The PJ thing wasn’t his fault.  He expected to have Reggie Bullock back, but he shockingly left for the NBA.  Those are 2 elite shooter right there.  I saw a stunning stat watching the UVA game.  UNC is ranked 344th out of 345 teams in D1 in 3 point field goals a game at 3.  Paige and Mcdonald are their only 3 point threats and Paige has really struggled since starting iff the season on fire.  Mcdonald has been nothing short of a disaster when it comes to consistent outside shooting.  Roy still has a few Mcdonald’s all-americans, but I think this is the least talent he’s ever had to work with,  This team is the least toughest physcially and mentally I’ve ever seen from a Roy Williams coached team also. They are outhustled, outbattled and get killed on the offensive glass. They are about to be 1-4 and are getting slaughtered by UVA.  Roy is a hall of fame coach obviously, but I think he has to take at least some of the blame.  His team this year is not anywhere close to being an elite team, but have enough talent to at least make the tournament.  If you did the brackets now, they would not make it.  The 2010 team was an embarrassment, and I think this team might be going down that road also.

he has a roster full of Burger All-Stars and he cant seem to put a team together worth watching, this team has ZERO discipline.. with the new AD in place I expect him to be gone unless he pulls one of the  biggest rabbits out of his ass to save his job.

Roy Williams has problems recruiting top talent which is even more important in the one-and-done era. But more importantly, it is clear that he doesn’t know how to capitalize on the talent he does get. Barnes was completely under-utilized. John Henson was not capitalized fully either.

The more I watch UNC the more I feel like McAdoo and Tokoto are being wasted on that team. IDK, maybe I’m being too hard on Roy. Just seems like he falls lower and lower on the coaching spectrum.

I’d say about 50%  is Roys fault. He’s not doing a terrible job coaching but he’s not doing a good one either. Obvious he didnt expect to lose PJ, but it happened, so that throws things outta wack already. But Roy’s coaching has been suspect this year. He makes very wierd substitution at oppurtune times. Example tonight with the 1st half winding down he takes out Meeks and Paige and inserts Britt and Hicks. Stupid move considering you’re down and already struggling to score, and lucky UVA only pushed the lead from 4 to 9 when it should have easily been more.

Also beside his questionable substitions he’s doesnt adapt to the talent he has. This years group is pretty much terrible on defense. The guards cant contain and we dont have consistent shot blocking or paint protection.  Defensively they are at their best when the run the point zone with McAdoo or Tokoto at the top or Hicks when he’s in. When they play this zone they play alot more aggressive, getting turnovers and easy baskets. And their half court seems to improve also with guys being more active and not relying too much on Paige. But instead of running this defense more Roy lets us get carved up for most of the game and then brings it out when it’s usually to late, or after we’ve gotten back into the game he switches back to man and again we get kilt.

The players have as much in this too. Their focus and intensity game to game or better yet possesion to possesion is up and down, with alot more down time then up. Besides Paige, Britt, and Meeks i would say this teams basketball IQ is rather low. And i dont think either one of them have a great basketball IQ either. You see it all game with their simple turnovers and missed rotations, and assignment defensively. McAdoo and McDonald take why to many contested jump shots. Overall this team isnt as talented as thought and yes they are still young but so are alot of other teams in the country. And to make matters worse the only guy who seems to have improved much is Paige. Everyone else is pretty much around the same as last yr. But i must say if Tokoto ever gets a consistent jump shot and attacks the basket at will all game he will be something specail.

Overall im gonna say Roys job is safe this yr because of the situations he had to deal with, and i believe they will still make the tournament, but its not looking to good at the moment.

Okay….obviously i am a duke fan and i hate unc and roy williams….but college basketball and the acc and the duke season isnt fun and its better when UNC is good, i dont want them to beat us or win titles but i think its good for the game if theyre competitive. The biggest problem with them right now is roy williams cant dominate the one and done era. Ever since it started i remember marvin williams leaving and thats all. This is what makes coach k great he dominates every era. Probably the biggest issue i see is the NCAA is looking into them. PJ busted w all that stuff then someone wanted to do a literacy test on the basketball players something everyone does at every school with all sports. They refused to do it….theres questions if theyre going to class and getting grades that they themselves actually earn. So all this said I tjink roy sees trojble isnt coaching the right way his mind is elsewhere. Recruits see he doesnt develope players wanted to go one and one and he is losing his respect among ncaa officials and his integrity. Remember roy wanted pj to play eithin games….the AD said no….

Some coaches win with the best talent and it’s "Well of COURSE team X should win, I mean, look at their team, it’s NBA players!".  The past few years UNC hasn’t had any REAL (read star) NBA players.  In turn, in the past few years they’ve been extremely mediocre.  Certain coaching strategies require you to have certain levels of talent in order to win.  Roy never changes his coaching style and now that he doesn’t have the players his system needs, his team’s are terrible.  Shocking that the talent of the players often supercedes the coaching ability of the coach.

The reason I say the blame goes on the players bcuz these guys showed they can play good basketball when they beat good teams that was rank. This team doesn’t understand you have to play hard n smart every game. I’m a Tar Heels fan and out off all the teams we had they the years this the most frustrating one bcuz they showed signs they can play great ball but for some reason they play like teams Are suppose to fear playing unc when now teams can’t wait to play us bcuz they no there’s a 75% chance beating us wit just playing hard. Now if this team hadn’t beat rank teams during the season then I wouldve place blame on Roy

It’s really hard for me to judge Roy. I mean on one hand, he has had some teams that are loaded with talent and then underachieve. But on the otherhand, he has two national championships, which a lot of outstanding coaches do not have. So, I just don’t know about him.

As a UNC student, I think he’s one of the most overrated coaches in the country. He’s a great recruiter (he gets McD’s All Americans all the time), but his game plan is basically to out-athlete the other team. When the other team successfully counters the athleticism, he has no idea what to do. It’s frustrating that he gets so much good talent and underachieves

Had UNC maintained playing the way they did against UK, UL and MSU would you be saying the same things?

The problem is Leslie McDonald.  He is taking dumb shots, taking away touches from talented bigs like JMM, Brice Johnson and Kennedy Meeks.  All of his shots are from 3 and he can’t throw the ball in the ocean.  And perhaps that is on Roy for playing him too much.  Without him they were 7-2 (should have been 9-0 had the team hit free throws) with the 3 most impressive wins to this date in all of college basketball.  With him they are 4-5 with their 4 wins against cupcakes.

Putting McDonald in the starting 5 is just mind boggling to me.  When Britt is aggressive good things happen.  He scores in more ways than L-Mac.  L-Mac is only going to score from 3.  Britt while he can’t throw the ball in the ocean from 3 is a solid mid range shooter and a good slasher, making defenses have to be more honest with him.  The problem is that when L-Mac came back Britt’s shots went down, Meeks shots went down and Brice Johsnon’s (who is a freak) shots went down, Paige is not getting near as many good looks as before and the sad thing is that L-Mac can’t throw the ball in the ocean.  Britt needs 8 shots a game and the offense should run through Meeks, JMM and Brice Johnson making the defense collapse on them and kicking out to Paige.  L-Mac needs 7 min. a game.
