I have been wondering about Patrick Patterson lately. As we all know he developed a 3pt shot in this last season with Kentucky. He is listed as a PF but PF normally do not shoot 3’s. So I have been thinking maybe he could play the 3 as well. He is a little small for the 4 though only being 6’8(maybe 6’9 but that’s a stretch) So the three might work for him. Although I do not about his foot speed. This is a necessity in order to play the 3 in the NBA because of so many fast 3’s. He has some nice post moves though so the 4 is still a possibility.
Personally I think he can play both the SF and the PF, but again I am unsure about his foot speed. Also who is Buck Williams? That is who this site compares Patterson too, but I have never heard of him.

I don’t think thAt he can play SF. He is to slow and won’t be able to keep up with most SF on defense. I also don’t think that he can play on the perimeter because even though he made some 3’s last year, he still isn’t an elite shooter and I don’t think that he will be able to hit the 3 consistently enough to play SF.

Why are you taking points off. I am just asking a question and giving you my thoughts on it based on what I know. I know I said that I don’t care about points in earlier posts, and I don’t, but sometimes the reasons why people take off points does not make sense. Just because you don’t agree with someone does not mean you take points off. That is their opinion and we should all respect that. Who knows maybe they are right, we have no idea. Opinions are not a sure thing. It would make more sense if you took points off for having the wrong information, but as far as I can see all my information is correct. (in this post at least) And I am just asking a question, where is the hurt and blame in that?
Just so you know this is directed to everyone not just you, jman159. This is happening a lot lately, and I am sick of it cause it just doesn’t make any sense.

Yo dog. I respect you…. just not your basketball knowledge. I mean, have you seen Patterson play at all? He can’t dribble like a three, he doesn’t have a first  step anywhere beyond that of an average NBA 4, let alone a three. While he’s good covering on the pick and roll on switches, there’s no WAY he can keep up with NBA 3s.

however, You could bring up Corliss Williamson. (You probably don’t know him either, crap).

But by your Logic, Javale McGee, Andrea Bargnani, Oleksiy Pecherov, Ryan Anderson and a couple more guys could play the three as well because they have superior footspeed to Patterson, AND they shoot the three.

Just to be clear, to play the three in the NBA,  you do NOT need to shoot the three.

Dwilljazz8, to answer your question about Buck Williams, he and Patrick have VERY similar games. Both are 6’8, 230, hit the boards like mad men, score mostly off of hustle plays and put backs and are TOUGH! To be undersized at any position, you got to be tough. If you want to compare him to anyone now, think a smaller Paul Milsap. That being said, Patrick is a power forward. Watching him since high school, I would always hope he would develop into a combo forward, guarding the front line as well as the wings, but thats just not him. Hes a hard hat kind of dude. He goes to work night in and night out. Ill take him on my team any day.

Corliss Williamson is a good example i like it, yeah theres no way patterson could keep up with lebron, anthony, marion, lewis, wallace, butler igudola, the list goes on forever here, a three is someone who can basically do everything for the team. Patterson couldnt break a half court press with the driibble to save his life, he hits three but i watched multiple kentucky games where he air balled college threes never mind nba, hes a 4 and will always be a 4 his entire career

Actually I do remember Corliss Williamson, tli 232 (funny, so far I remember all the players you have mentioned, Toni Kukoc, Corliss Willamson). But to me he was not very dominant. Paul Millsap is a much better comparison to me. Small yet able to get boards like a madman. I believe Millsap and Patterson are the same size, both are 6’8

yes that is true, you do not need to shoot the three to play SF in the NBA, but to me SF’s are better if they are able to shoot the three. (name one GOOD SF that cannot shoot the three well)And SF’s do shoot the three more often then PF’s do. And no, I do not consider McGee, Pecherov as 3 type players. Bargnani, and Anderson maybe.

I admit my basketball knowledge is not that good, (except for the jazz cause they are my favorite team) but at least I have an opinion about players. Last time I checked, opinions don’t need to be actual knowledge. yes, they need to be based on knowledge in order to be considered relevant but they are not actual facts or knowledge. This opinion is based on actual knowledge. He can shoot the three not that great but he can shoot it. Now I know from this post that his foot speed is not that great, but that was my question beforehand was it not? I did not know about this beforehand and therefore I asked just to clear up the gray area that I had. I still don’t see that as reason to take points off.

dwilljazz, patterson does not have the skills to play sf. He will play pf, but he is more of a spot up shooter type instead of a traditional banger. I worry he may fall too in love with his jumper and become a brian cook type who basically just shot jumpers his whole career. If patterson mixes it up and uses both his jumper and his inside game, he could play a similar style to David west of new orleans where he does a lot of his damage from the perimiter, but still shows some power skills in the paint.

I could see him developing into a David West type. Hes got to bulk up alil more if hes gonna do that. I dont want him to lose that explosion though.

Patterson does seem to me to maybe be a David West type to but earlier in his career he was more of a banger and also doesnt he have long arms. Elton Brand was never seen as a small power forward cept for before draft so he could fall and he is 6’8″. Why should Patterson be considered a small power forward. He may very well be 6’9″ in shoes.

Yeah I dont get why people think 6’8 is undersized for a PF…its not anymore. 10 years ago it would have been. But the days of 2 bangers in the post are over. Teams are much more perimeter oriented and PF’s usually work the high post area and pick and roll actions now.

I cant think of any PF in the NBA that Patterson would be outsized against. That doesnt mean he’s going to be as tall as every PF in the NBA, but he wont be outmatched in terms of size by anybody. Plus the guy has like a 7’4 wingspan doesnt he? He’s athletic enough to guard most PF’s so that wont be a problem either. If he was 6’8 and glued to the floor cuz of no athletic ability then yes he would have a problem…but thats not the case.

I think Patterson could be a poormans David West or a Paul Millsap type of guy. He does have that lunchpale workmans type mentality it seems like…but he also a pretty skilled player. He just didnt showcase it much this year cuz of Wall and Cousins.

If anyone wants to make an argument that undersized PFs can’t make it in the NBA, check DeJuan Blair and Paul Millsap. Somehow height manages to overshadow attributes such as balance, footwork, strength, and knowledge of the game of basketball. Then you see teams kicking themselves for passing up on these guys but the next year they just do it all over again. And like Biggy said, 6-8 isn’t exactly undersized, especially when he has that wingspan.

you can make up for a lack of height with alot of different things.
    1. Know how to throw your weight around.
    2. Athleticism…use it to an advantage
    3. timing and sound fundamentals on rebounding
    4. diversify offensive game…extend range, passing, ball handling
    5. Do the little things…as cliche as it sounds, guys make a living in the NBA doing it.

“it aint the size of the dog in the fight, its the size of the fight in the dog” Best quote ever!!!
