first couple opt-outs are reported today.

al horford – as someone posted earlier, this appears to be a restructure move to free up some salary cap space for boston this year and give horford a longer contract.

harrison barnes – this was a surprising move.  barnes at $25M seemed like a lot to walk away from.  barnes doesn’t seem to garner a big contract as he sort of has fizzled the last couple years.  wondering if this was bad advice, didn’t like the situation with kings or believes he’s worth a max contract?

    After KD(injured)

Kawhi(likely signing with Raps or Clippers)

    Butler(likely resigning with 76ers)

    Middleton(likely resigning with Bucks)

who’s left to pay at SF?

He may be the only SF you can try to land in Free Agency (Durant/Leonard/Butler/Middleton aint meeting with anyone but their respective teams and maybe the Lakers/Clippers/Knicks/Nets)

Harrison Barnes is still young, can still defend and get hot from deep, a lot of teams could use a solid SF (New Orleans was practically begging for one before AD was traded)

Even if signs for 15 million per, a 3-4 year deal equals 45 to 60 million, 45-60 is better than 25 and no security afterwards

Barnes will probably get 4 x 80 from someone.

Side note – I can see the Knicks burning their cap space for Barnes and Randle. The fans will tear down MSG but these are the type of signings that should be expected from the Knicks. Front office is brain dead.

I think Barnes’ strategy is that there is so much cap space that he should be able to get atleast Jabari Parker money on a longer deal ( 2 year 40 million; 2nd year team option). Lots of teams have cap space. Last time Barnes hit free agency things worked out for him.

I think Barnes may have seen some things go down that increased his value the last few weeks. Durant and Thompson both get hurt badly and the Raptors win the finals.

This means to me it is more likely that the Warriors bring back KD on a short deal. Klay I think was always staying but they way they lost I imagine 95 percent he stays in Golden State. Toronto winning means Kawhi is more likely to stay in Toronto.

AD is traded to the Lakers which takes them out of the running for any other max free agents. This means somebody like Jimmy Butler or Kemba is now more likely to resign with their current team. In other words a ripple effect is taking place that could leave Barnes as one of the few remaining forwards with upside that will actually relocate this offseason.

Barnes didn’t play poorly for Sacramento but he was phased out a bit as Bagley came on strong and plays Barnes best position of PF.

I think he will have a decent market. I could see the Nets, Clippers, Pacers and Jazz potentially having interest depending how the summer shakes out. Chicago or Atlanta could possibly give him a shorter deal with a team option similar to what Jabari Parker got last summer.

I remember Richard Jefferson making fun of Harrison Barnes when he said he is considering his options for free agency and mocking him saying "no way you pass on the 25". Looks like Barnes believes in himself and will be looking for a shortterm deal in a better situation or a longterm deal with similar money.

Barnes has only just turned 27, so I thought he might have taken the money and opted in and then fit FA next summer. He’d have likely landed $10 to $12 million minimum then. So needs something over $15 million per year this summer to make up for guaranteed money he has left behind.

But as was said above a lot of teams have taken guys on lucrative one year deals so he might as well have opted in IMO.

Jonas V at Memphis has opted out of over $18 million per year which is a risky thing to do on a team in rebuild as they can use the saved salary to take on salary dumps.

I like Barnes as small ball 4 for the Sixers if Harris doesn’t resign. In fact I wish they had traded for him instead of Harris. He would’ve been way cheaper.
