Kevin6CDParticipantScouting report for University of Michigan SG Nik Stauskas. Breakdown of strengths (shooting, playmaking) and weaknesses (strength, defense). Plus, analyzing his potential fit for the Pistons in this year’s draft.

SpartanGloryParticipantPistons better not take him over Harris. Harris actually can play some D and has more offensive potential that Stauskus, who most likely will end up as a spot up 3 point shooter.

Kevin6CDParticipantwith you to an extent. I think Harris definitely has the higher upside due to his superior strength and defensive potential. The issue with Harris (in my eyes) is, is he the shooter that we saw this season, or is he the shooter we saw last season? I certainly won’t be upset if the Pistons take Harris, but I think Stauskas fits their needs more.

Rip255I’d like to see Stauskas settle as the first scoring option coming off the bench. He could run off screens set by backup centers and take jumpers, as well as use his playmaking skills to drive and assume lead-guard responsibilities.
When the starting unit is on, he could soak up some minutes and sit in the corner to space the floor and be a knock-down shooter as well as a reliable free throw shooter in the clutch.

Kevin6CDParticipantVery similar to what I mentioned near the end about using KCP and Stauskas as somewhat of an offense-defense platoon. I think Stauskas would give them some versatility.

SpartanGloryParticipantYou guys are assuming that Stauskus is going to be able to handle the ball at the next level against much better defense than he saw in college. He’s not a good ball handler to begin with and is very deficient in strength. I think Harris fits the pistons need for defense on the wing and a starter who can play off the ball dominant Jennings. I just don’t see why the pistons would draft a guy 8 overall, who might only come off their bench to shoot some 3s and possibly run a pick n roll or 2? Harris fits much better IMO. Anyway, I’m a sixers fan also so if the pistons mess up and take Stauskus, I’ll be happy
I could be wrong here but I wouldn’t be surprised if the pistons made some big trades on draft day involving their pick, and Smith/Monroe.

Kevin6CDParticipantHarris is a particularly strong ball-handler either. I don’t know what suggests Stauskas can’t be a starter either in the long run. I could see the Pistons trading down too, value at 8 is similar to what they could get in the mid-teens.

B-ball fanParticipantI was under the impression that Stauskas had better handles than Harris. Harris may have better long-term potential due to his superior strength, but Stauskas is the more creative ball-handler right now, although he has to improve his off-hand. Stauskas is also a much better shooter and was the better finisher at the rim in college, despite his lack of strength.

addi troupaParticipantNot sure if i agree that Harris has more offensive potential than Stauskas, does not have the dribble to create his own shot but will improve no doubt. I agree defensively and athletically he has the advantage on Stauskas but offensively they are in a different league IMO. I’m not sold on Harris, i think James Young and Stauskas will be better players when it’s all said and done. Plus his injury history scares me.

SpartanGloryParticipantI’m thinkin that initially, Harris will be a defender and off the ball offensive player. He’s not going to have ISO sets called for him, so while he improves his overall offensive game, he can still come off screens and shoot, while also being an above average defender. It’s impossible to tell who’s going to be the best, but Stauskus and young are both bigger question marks than Harris at this point.

I think pistons take him and nice kcp to the 3 let Monroe walk out josh at the 4 only ve cause they shouldn’t pay Monroe it will never work having Monroe josh and Drummond no floor spacing at all keeping them means benching smith or Monroe but why bench them if your gonna pay them so much

Kevin6CDParticipantwhere else I saw that comparison, maybe it was in a thread on this forum? I get it, the shooting is comparable, but even then, Steph is better at getting his own looks. Not to mention the obvious differences in size and position.

B-ball fanParticipantDefinitely reminds me of Curry. Obviously there are huge differences, but Stauskas has a similar ability to his shots off-the-dribble and has a similar combination of outstanding handles combined with pure shooting ability. And like Curry, Stauskas’s lack of strength will render him prone to getting stripped, at least early in his career.

benny15Participantthe offensive simillarities have been stated, the pull up from the dribble, deceptive slashing ability and shooting, all not in the same level but style of play have simillarities. but more than that, in a negative way, they are simillar defensively as well. a big difference though is that steph curry possitions himself better in passing lanes for steals and getting long rebounds. their man to man d though are both pretty bad.

BlueLacesParticipantI said a poor mans Steph Curry, not all-nba Steph Curry. Both had underrated athleticism, handles and playmaking ability coming out of college . Stauskas is a great pick and roll player and there was no one better at shootin tough shots off the dribble than Stauskas this year in the NCAA.

Captain LParticipantI’d take Stauskas, I think he is the underrated one, he has better size, Harris is a bit undersized, I like Staukas’s shooting better and his handles better and I think he could be a shorter version of Hayward with maybe a little better shot. His quick release, movement without the ball or even with it makes me think he will be a very good 2 in the league.

r377ParticipantThat’s a pretty decent write up. He is an outstanding shooter but also and elite passer (quite rare for a SG).
Assuming Monroe leaves and Josh Smith plays the 4, the Pistons might look at a SF. I am not sure if Stauskas is big enough to guard most of the SF’s in the league. The Pistons could look at taking Kyle Anderson or Saric with their pick.
If they did take Stauskas they would be kicking themselves for not taking Trey Burke in last years draft. Mitch McGary is currently 39th on this mock draft and the pistons have the 38th pick although for me personally I cannot see Mitch dropping that low….

Kevin6CDParticipanthave ideal size, but did play over 450 minutes at SF this season. I think he has the length to make up for being shorter than most 3s. Will be interesting to see how things develop going forward with Stan Van Gundy coming in. Very excited about the hire.
