The nets have quietly put themselves in the position to be major players in free agency next summer with a bunch of shrewd under the radar moves. First, they were able to excise the contract of Timofey Mozgov to a Charlotte team that apparently couldn’t stand Dwight Howard so much that they were willing to take on mozgovs deal just to get rid of him. After buying Howard out, they moved Jeremy Lin to Atlanta for the right to essentially swap picks in 2020 and a distant future second rounder. Than they acquired to the expiring deals of Kenneth Faried and Darrell Arthur from Denver and picked up a protected 2019 first rounder in the process which will likely convey. And they signed underrated ed Davis in free agency on a relatively cheap one year deal.

Marks was given an unenviable task in rebuilding this franchise with few assets and no draft picks and has done a remarkable job so far imo. Don’t get me wrong, there is still a ton of work to do, they still haven’t found any definitive franchise cornerstones, and they will still likely be very bad next season. But with the cap space they will have next summer, the allure of playing in ny, and the fact that they start keeping their own draft picks soon, there is a vision to sell free agents now. Things are actually starting to look up for nets fans for the first time in a long time.

Yeah but… do you think Kyrie, Jimmy or Klay would really go to the Nets over the Knicks !?

The Knicks can only afford one max and another guy at a less than max #. Brooklyn can easily fit 2 max and possibly 3 if they move Crabbe’s last year and depending on where their draft picks fall.

A backcourt consisting of D’Angelo Russell and Klay Thompson is music to my ears!

As his family is from N.J so there is a slim chance also this would mean Butler may come if he is really keen on playing with Iriving…

nets are making huge moves after all those horrible deals from the past.i think will get big free agents due to having two max contract slots and being in brooklyn.

Brooklyn’s FO has actually shown some semblance of competence since Sean Marks got in. I could see guys looking at them more favorably now, especially since they’re almost out of the woods from all the picks they traded away

It would make the East a lot more fun if the Nets manage to acquire a pair of superstars next summer.

They have some rotation guys: Allen, RHJ, LeVert. A 3 ball shooter good enough for a championship team: Crabbe. And one of their future big 3: DRuss. I wasn’t wild about their drafting this year, but next year they should be one of the worst 3 times and finally be able to pick with it. They should have the Nuggets pick in the 16-22 range.

I agree the GM has worked magic, but they are still far from a decent team. I assume they traded Lin to tank.

After all this and finally getting away from the worst trade in history they might bring back Garnett and Pierce from retirement and offer them the max

D’angelo Russell will be an all star next year. Do the Nets actually own a pick next year? That Celtics  Nets trade reminds me of 2k my GM just throwing draft picks to make the deal go through.

The key to the Nets’ thinking is getting a couple of top or near top level FAs next summer. A single top FA may not look at Brooklyn but if a pair of guys want to hook up then a team like Brooklyn could appeal to them as it is near to the New York area which would likely attract them.

If the Knicks are in play as well then aq lot could depend on how Porz is after his injury as the bigger actual NY market could make Knicks more appeal than the Nets.

I’ll also throw one thought out here, with the West so loaded may some guys look to move East to try and potentially showcase themselves and even have more chance to make the All Star game. All Star appearances can help future contracts and it looks good on a CV even in the history books. They may see Player A with several All Star games and Player B with none or only one. You don’t immediately know the West was loaded then compared to the East etc.

Getting the right FAs would of course be the key for the Nets. If they start targetting everyone from KD then they could well end up with none of the top targets. Whilst you never want 2nd best or to overpay the wrong guy. The Nets could do worse than identify the guys they think they have a realk chance of landing or landing a guy who others like to play with and once FA opens get those pitches in right away.

Players have egos and to receive an immediate FA pitch would go down much better than knowing you clearly not the first choice.

A lot will also depend on how the Nets young core progresses, they want to do well but still get a good lottery pick. Ideal for them would be to improve beyond 30 wins but then get lucky in the lottery to get a shot at an RJ or Zion type stud.

100% follow Brooklyn because Sean Marks is a New Zealander (also turned out for our Nationl team constantly) & he has done an impressive job so far. His patience has been key, his moves never seemed to be rushed and he has put them in a nice spot after this season.

Most New Zealanders have no clue that the Nets are run by a fellow New Zealander
If people actually knew I’d bet they’d be just as much a local bandwagon team as the Thunder round here
