Does anyone have an opinion on this NBA and China stuff going on?

Im not going to pretend I am expert on global politics but sounds like Hong Kong Protests are for the basic right of a group of people. The NBA has a chance to be on the right side of history and should probably stop pandering to the power of the dollar.

Russ and Harden talking about how they love the Chinese people. Do they really or do they just love their money? I am of the view that the average chinese person is working long hours at slave wages. So if they really loved the Chinese people they should be supporting the Hong Kong Protests for the basic rights of a human.

I just think it’s kind of pathetic how certain people within the NBA are super vocal about US politics but go silent when it threatens their bottom line, especially with a basic freedom / human dignity issue like the one going on in Hong Kong.

NOTE: I’m not saying people within the NBA should stop talking US politics — that is their right, no matter how anyone feels about their opinions.

The more I’ve thought about it, the more I think I understand why they’re not speaking out.

It’s easy for us to sit here and say what we think. But for the guys who actually have everything to lose, it’s not so easy. If all these guys came out in support of the protesters, what would happen to the NBA if China just decided to take it down? Not to mention, I have a feeling the league has sent a memo to every single person involved in the league telling them to keep quiet.

In an ideal world, they could all speak up and it would all work out, but unfortunately that’s not the reality

The Thing that Ticks me off. Is the Lawmakers here in America that want nba players to make a statement about the situation in China. But want them to Shut up and Dribble or Stop Kneeling when it comes to the rights of Minorities on their own country!

Minorities have every right and beyond. They arguably have more rights than non-minorities lol. Prejudice is about how you carry yourself I think.

i dont think most lawmakers care what athletes do about china. Its more of just an opportunity to sling mud at athletes who are outspoken about them so heres their chance to say okay you want to talk politics and injustice, so whats stoping you now? $$$$$$

The Rockets’ owner, management and players have behaved like people with no principles. It’s sickening. Also, apparently you are not allowed to protest in NBA arenas. Has that always been the case? Or is it only if you are anti-Chinese government and pro-Hong Kong?

Silver has said the NBA will not censor or punish anyone for speaking out on the matter — he deserves credit for that.

Also did anyone hear Trump going off on Kerr and Popovich? He totally misunderstood — or deliberately misrepresented — what Pop said. Pop wasn’t defending China or badmouthing the U.S. He was standing up for Morey’s (and everyone’s) freedom of speech.

i cant blame the nba for wanting to stay quiet on this and get their money only because people like to talk but stop when it effects them. People wearing nike’s and talking on their iphones and everything else thats mmade in China because its convient for them but the NBA is supposed to turn down billions? Also, one of the positives of the nba’s realationships with different countries is it helps build bridges and hopefully helps make the lives of the chinese citizens a little better by watching basketball. Thats why I dont like mixing politics with sports, i get enough of that on the news.

They have probably planned this trip for years now so its not like they could just cancel. As far as keeping quiet aand not taking a stance check out this article. https://www.cnn.com/2019/10/09/tech/blizzard-gaming-backlash-hong-kong-intl-hnk-scli/index.html

Basically what happened is a Hearthstone player which is a Blizzard card game won a tournament. During his winning interveiw he supported the Hong Kong protests and Blizzard had his victory winnings rescinded and suspended him from playing in pro tournaments. So now the majority of their fanbase and staff are boycotting Blizzard entirely its a huge mess.

China is not a wise market to go into right now and if your the NBA and you’ve already made plans to go into that market you should be telling your players to stfu just to avoid that kind of mess.

Basketball and the NBA should be more successful in a Hong Kong. I hear China censors Internet usage. For example the internet is essentially a government service? Hong Kong is more small, wealthier per capita, and involved in commerce. Now China wants to meddle in Hong Kong.

Since th UK gave Hong Kong back roughly 22 years ago, Hong Kong IS China, FYI. That is what the protests are about. They are pro-democracy protests against an totalitarian regime.

Hong Kong, as a territory if you will, spent 100 years under UK rule and enjoyed relative autonomy. After the time was up it was given back to China in 1997 or so. I remember the worry of HK citizens about what would happen when rule was returned the repressive and totalitarian Chinese regime. What they are protesting is the fact that they don’t have the same democratic freedoms and relative autonomy that was enjoyed previously before their return to China. They are pro-democracy protests, because, well, they are aren’t democratic.

I think Hong Kong still enjoys a fair amount of freedom, relative to China.

The only country that thinks Hong Kong and Taiwan are provinces of China is China. Everyone toes the line and refers to them as "special autonomous zones" or similar but that’s because no one wants a war or to affect trade. China will one day bring this to a head globally and it’ll be WW3. If/when they try and take Hong Kong, Taiwan or the South China Sea by force, or make something more of this belt road initiative, it’ll be time for you preppers to bug out.

Wow, so LeBron said that Morey was "misinformed" when he made his infamous tweet.

But when asked to enlighten us on the conflict between China and Hong Kong, Professor James had nothing. He just said that it is his "belief" that Morey was misinformed.

What do beliefs have to do with it? If you’re going to call someone "misinformed," shouldn’t you at least claim to have THE CORRECT INFORMATION? What a d-bag.

Hong Kong is a few miles off the China mainland but after China lost a war to Great Brittain in the 1840’s Hong Kong was handed over & Hong Kong was run by Great Brittan as a Western Democracy since the 1840’s

In 1949, China’s communist revolution took places & MILLIONS were murdered & hundreds of thousands of terrified freedom loving Chinese escaped death by emigrating to Honk Kong

In 1997, as part of an international agreement Great Brittain returned control of Hong Kong to China but China left them continue to function as a Free Western style Government b/c China was desperate for America to allow them entry into the World Trade Organization & Hong Kong was China’s "Window Dressing" to the west

So even though they are mass murdering chinese citizens in mainland China for anyone practicising christianity or islam the brutal main land Chinese Dictatorship left Hong Kong alone b/c it was useful to them & America fell for it & allowed China into the WTO in 1999

In the 20+ years since the Communist Chinese Government has grown rich by ripping off American companies & using their own people as slave labor & they don’t need Hong Kong as much so recently China Changed Hong Kong’s Extradition Laws

THIS is why all the Protests are occuring. So now in Hong Kong you can literally just disappear. The police can arrest you for ANYTHING & you have NO rights – they just ship you to mainland China & no obe EVER sees you again. Before the Extradition Law change the Hong Kong people had rights very similar to Americans & Europeans & could NOT be shipped off to China

So these YOUNG people in Hong Kong have said NO F’ing Way! & they have Protested every day for over a month & they have actually scared the ish out of the Bully Chinese Government & actually got them to Back Down! It’s Inspiring! & it is Not complicated one bit – these young people are being murdered in the streets b/c they want to keep Basic Human Rights

There is Nothing Confusing about this – you are either for Freedom & Human Rights or you are for ruthless police states, concentration camps & murder…. there’s No grey area & I dont give AF if the bad guys are paying you

I can explain more why China needed Hong Kong – it’s a little more in depth w/ the monetary system & the Petro Dollar but I didn’t want to write a 25 paragraph explanantion. Bottom line corruption & abuse by those in power is WRONG so I dont wanna hear dumb ish like well America is messed up too – No Ish! It’s Not mutually exclusive – we should call out Tyrants wherevere & whenever we can whether they are American Tyrants or Foreign Tyrants what these scumbags have in common is they Luv money & power more than human life & they ALL belong in Jail – Not in Power

& for Lebron to come out w/ this weak, punk statement is Sickening

Curt Flood, Muhammad Ali, Colin Kapernick, Enes Kanter

They put their values above their finances and sacrifced for the greater good.

It’s easy to lob volleys behind the safety net of social media.  It’s another thing to sacrifice your livelihood, family, and feel the rejection of your country for standing up for our basic human rights.

Thanks to them for their true sacrifice.
