I’ve been sitting on this idea, pondering if I should let it loose to the masses as it is a little out of left field, but it would solve the issues of tanking and teams not trying to put their best team forward. I know this idea will never be excepted, but just humor me as theoretically I think it could work. It’s a tad confusing, but I’ll try to make it as clear as possible. So here we go!

The basis of the idea is that teams do not get to pick where they finish in the season standings, but for a different team. However, picking the team you get the pick for is based on your standings. This would promote winning, and not tanking, as the worse your team does, the better pick some other team gets. So the worst place team would pick the team they predict to do the worst the next year, then the second worst team would pick and so on. No picking your own team though. So lets run through an example:

I’m going to list the 2013/2014 end of season standings and in brackets would be the team they would pick to finish the worst in the 2014/2015 season. I based the predictions on my predictions from that year (I do a season pick ’em game every year, so these aren’t made up/captain hindsight predictions).

    1. Milwaukee (Philadelphia)
    2. Philadelphia (Utah)
    3. Orlando (Lakers)
    4. Utah (Boston)
    5. Boston (Milwaukee)
    6. Lakers (Sacramento)
    7. Sacramento (Minnesota)
    8. Detroit (Indiana)
    9. Cleveland (Orlando)
    10. New Orleans (Phoenix)
    11. Denver (New York)
    12. New York (Brooklyn)
    13. Minnesota (New Orleans)
    14. Phoenix (Denver)
    15. Atlanta (Detroit)
    16. Charlotte (Atlanta)
    17. Brooklyn (Miami)
    18. Washington (Charlotte)
    19. Chicago (Washington)
    20. Toronto (Houston)
    21. Dallas (Toronto)
    22. Memphis (Dallas)
    23. Golden State (Memphis)
    24. Portland (Golden State)
    25. Houston (Oklahoma City)
    26. Miami (Portland)
    27. Indiana (Cleveland)
    28. Clippers (Chicago)
    29. Oklahoma City (San Antonio)
    30. San Antonio (Clippers)

So now we can see how this new draft order would look. I’ll list the actual draft order from the 2014/2015 season and in brackets will be the team who would be making the pick (in my new draft format). I’ll also list how much that team moved up or down in the new system. I’ll throw in the players they could have drafted to make it even more visual (based on what we knew during the draft, not what we know now).

    1. Minnesota (Sacramento gets to pick, +5): KAT [Sacramento picked Minnesota (see above), so the Kings would pick KAT]
    2. Lakers (Orlando, +3): Porzingis
    3. Philadelphia (Milwaukee, +14): Okafor
    4. New York (Denver, +3): Russell
    5. Orlando (Cleveland, +18): Winslow
    6. Sacramento (Lakers, -4): WCS
    7. Denver (Phoenix, +6): Hezonja
    8. Detroit (Atlanta, +21): Johnson
    9. Charlotte (Washington, +10): Turner
    10. Miami (Brooklyn, +5): Mudiay
    11. Indiana (Detroit, -3): Kaminsky
    12. Utah (Philadelphia, -9): Booker
    13. Phoenix (New Orleans, +5): Oubre
    14. Oklahoma City (Houston, +14): Payne
    15. Brooklyn (New York, -11): Lyles
    16. Boston (Utah, -4): Vaughn
    17. Milwaukee (Boston, -1): Rozier
    18. New Orleans (Minnesota, -17): Portis
    19. Washington (Chicago, +3): Wright
    20. Toronto (Dallas, +1): Grant
    21. Dallas (Memphis, +4): Anderson
    22. Chicago (Clippers, +5): RHJ
    23. Cleveland (Indiana, -12): Martin
    24. Portland (Miami, -14): Dekker
    25. Memphis (Golden State, +5): Nance Jr.
    26. San Antonio (Oklahoma City, -12): Hunter
    27. Clippers (San Antonio, -1): Milutinov
    28. Houston (Toronto, -8): McCullough
    29. Atlanta (Charlotte, -20): Looney
    30. Golden State (Portland, -6): Jones

The two flaws I see in my system is big injuries during the season (a protected good team does poorly, meaning a good team will end up getting a better pick than anticipated, for example Houston picking OKC and Durant getting hurt) and teams picking up big free agents (Cleveland getting Orlando’s draft position while also signing Lebron during free agency). But other than those, I think this system would promote trying to win as the better your team does, the worse pick another team gets.

    Some other details:
-teams would pick their drafting team ~2 weeks before the regular season begins (this way you can factor in free agents)
-future picks can still be traded. The team that has traded for that pick would get to pick 2 different drafting teams. Still can’t pick your own team.

So let me know what y’all think about my crazy pipedream idea. Do you think it would promote winning? Do you think it would better the game? What do you think are the pros and cons to it?

Also, if you need any clarification, just ask. I know it’s kind of a mess.

    Thanks!

David Stern and Adam Silver would respond to this idea, the same way he did when people wanted to change the NETS name to the Swamp Dragons..

Heres a better Idea, Have all the GMs and Owners vote for the Top 5 worst teams.. And conduct the lottery after that.. This allows teams to recognize which teams were working hard but generally bad vs teams that underachieved for the sole reason of landing the first pick

A vote would have too much political matters. Rival teams wouldn’t vote the other into the bottom 5 so they wouldn’t get a high pick and good prospect. There has too be some quantitative way to rank the teams without personal input.

Not saying my idea is perfect, it’s far from that, but I think it would increase the values of the game while still giving poorer teams a better shot at the top picks.

Thats a horrible justification, you do realize majority of the league will outweigh those "Rival" teams you mentioned..

There are only 30 teams in the league, a few votes here and there could change the aspects of what you’re describing. I just don’t think something like this should be put into people’s hands as there is always bias and ulterior motives. Do they not wanna vote for a young, up and coming team that could be 1 piece away (like Minnesota) or teams that just had a down year but could become good (Milwaukee, Sacramento, New Orleans, Phoenix), or teams that can attract big free agents (Lakers, New York)?

Do what MLB does… rotate it. Is there any problems with that?

.500….. & the NBA has Multiple teams that spend YEARS losing…….. Worst Record gets the Top pick…. 2nd Worst record gets the #2 pick……

If the Lakers land Outside the Top 3 – they LOSE their pick…… they have a 55% chance of remaining In the Top 3…. & a 45% chance of Losing that pick…….

It is INSANE that a 16 win team can land Outside the Top 3…..

How big a deal is this??? Let’s just say the Lakers w/ the 2nd Worst record get to pick 2nd…. They take Brandon Ingram….. hire a new coach & along w/ their other young players they Suddenly become a "Sexy" Destination for a Top Free Agent….. Boom they a 30 win team next year & "On Their Way Up"…….

If the Lakers LOSE that pick….. They’ll win 12 games next year & will go into year 3 of Uber Tank Mode…… B/c they will be Stagnant….. No Free Agent will go there…. Not one that can make a Difference anyway…..

If there is No Lottery this Nonsense does Not go One for Years……

This is Not Rocket Science…. Scrap the Stupid Lottery System……..
