So after the Love trade goes through, Minnesota will be set up to be bad enough not to get into the playoffs but good enough not to be a top lottery team. They’ll have a mix of veteran players who deserve minutes and young guys who need developing minutes. It doesn’t help that the veteran guys have long contracts and play the same position as some of their top young talent. I’m also assuming 2 or 3 of Barea, Brewer, and Budinger will be included in the Min-Cle-Phi trade. After the Love trade, I’d go hard at trying to unload Martin and Pekovic.

The best trade I could come up with is Martin and Pekovic to New York for Stoudemire and Shumpert. Minny gets rid of large contracts for expiring deal and young talent. New York brings in some more talent to play with Carmelo, and they should be a playoff team in the East after this.

MIN lineup: Rubio (Williams/Lavine), Wiggins (Shumpert), Young (Muhammed), Stoudemire (Mbah a Moute), and Dieng (Turiaf). This team would suck, but it’s oozing with potential.

NY lineup: Calderon (Larkin), Martin (Smith), Anthony (Hardaway), Bargnani (Smith/Early), and Pekovic (Dalembert). Pretty much surrounding Melo with shooters and 1 post option. This team could be good, offensively. Quite horrible on defense though.

I agree with most of your theory but not all. I don’t see them wanting to get rid of Brewer, because of his defense. The three I fully expect to be gone are Martin, Mbah a Moute and Barea. I’m also not sure Mohammed has a home here after this trade either. He hustles, but shoots way to much for team ball.

I agree with half, but i like shabazz’s upside. He never really got any mins late year. Maybe brewer leaving would be best.

Added to that, Shabazz has basically no trade value right now so he can only go forward from here.

As a twolves fan I think the Twolves should be able to get more for Pek(he got 18ppg and 9rpg playing with Kevin Love)and Martin got 19ppg and shot 39% from 3. So there would need to be a few picks in there/young players. I think the knicks would have to give up hardaway and early.the knicks would probably need to take budinger or berea. And a few picks.

    Knicks get Pek, Martin, Budinger

Twolves get Amare, Hardaway, Early and a future first and second round pick

I think that is a pretty fair trade for both teams and it helps minnesota tank for a year and hopefully get a good young big man to replace love. The knicks get a legimate low post presence and guy who plays great off the ball and can put up 15 to 20 points a night. I think both teams win

I actually prefer your idea. They do have big contracts, but they are good players (I’m a big Pek fan). Minny can haul in more young guys and could actually have a very competitive team in about 2 years.

I fear that when you unload all your veterans the team lacks leadership during the rebuilding process which leads to a losing culter.

Agreed. I think Martin, Pek and Barea should go. Rubio will have to be a leader and I feel keeping Bud around wouldn’t be terrible. Maybe sign a veteran big man. You don’t need too many vets but you need a couple. I prefer a big and wing man vets. Especially since you have a young big in Dieng and young wings in Wiggins and Lavine. A year of Thad Young would be great too. I think the first year is crucial to have good attitudes around.

Though I’m not sure a team with Martin, Pek and these young guys are good enough to even be close to playoffs. Probably around 7-8th pick which isn’t bad. Like I said though I think Barea and Martin must go. Too shot happy with not much defense.

Minny is in a good spot. They need to make these trades soon though to keep their players value as high as it can be. No hurry in Minny. They’ll be better for this in 3 years. Lavine I’m wary about. All the talent in the world but he needs a mentor badly IMO. A solid veteran combo guard would be nice. An Antonio Daniels(can’t think of anyone else ATM) type would be good.

I somewhat agree with this, but they’d still have a handful of vets (Mo Williams, Thad Young, Stoudemire, Turiaf) that have been around and play hard. But when you do unload vets, it gives a chance for some young guys to be leaders and make the team their own (Rubio, Wiggins).

Man I hope this Wiggins trade goes thru. Wiggins,LaVine and Rubio…..so hyped 🙂

I just hope Rubio practices his shooting this offseason, to make him a complete player.

The Wolves will be looking for a power forward to replace Love  until Bennett proves capable and a scorer off the bench if they get rid of J.J. Barea.  Brewer, Pekovic and Budinger all have important roles as part of the rotation and they aren’t going to be given away.

The Wolves will a good team as soon as Wiggins is ready to contribute for 35 to 38 minutes per game.

Pekovic is a top level center while Brewer is a solid defender that can knock down open threes.  Budinger has to get over his knee problems but he also isn’t a player you just give away.

One of Corey Brewers problems is that he CANNOT knock down open 3’s. Last season he was 59-211 (28 pct). The 5 previous seasons were 29, 26, 31, 26, and 27 percent.

I also think Brewer is an overrated defender. Brewer gambles a lot on D and tries to jump passing lanes. Brewer ends up with a lot of steals, 151 last year, 118 the season prior, but leaves his team short handed when his gambles fail, which is most of the time. He also doesn’t add much in the way of blocking shots, with only 143 blocks in 467 career games.

I think the Wolves would be happy to trade Budinger to anyone who would take his contract. It probably wouldn’t take a lot to pry Brewer loose either.

Am I the only one that keeps forgetting GR3 is on the Wolves? Is he going to make the squad or spend most his time in the D-league?

You make mention of getting rid of solid contributing players without mentioning who would replace them.
