Big melo fan, not loving melo’s extreme weight loss, a few lbs would be ok, but this could hurt his low post ups, and rebounding. I guess we’ll see what it helps.

I understand the reasoning but losing weight and adding quickness guys reaching 30 is not a bad idea. He’s not going to be losing much strength, just body fat percentage, which will also help with his endurance. I think it’s a wise idea, it’s a function of keeping it off.

The weight that he lost was fat, not muscle.  I don’t get how the notion of fat = strength began.

Well you probably never touched a basketball to begin with, melo’s lost post game will take a hit! Judging off the intagram pic! I know losing weight in your 30’s isn’t a bad plan, but melo’s lost post was what help make him the best scorer in the game, and you are retarded if you think melo had 40 pounds of fat to take off, he lost some strength.

He didn’t lose forty pounds.  He probably lost fifteen pounds at most.  Your logic is nuts.  You say that he’s going to lose his low post game because he lost his paunch.  Give me a break.

Apparently there’s no reasoning with/hope for jjmass. He lost way closer to 15 than 40 lbs yet jj acts like he was right. And it’s one thing to throw around the word fact but to blatantly speculate and still say you’re stating facts is assanine and delusional and doesn’t garner a response. Kudos for trying to reason with that stupidity and immaturity, I’ll pass.

Melo lost more than 15 lbs and he also lost strength that’s a fact, his low post game will hurt that’s a fact, that’s my point, melo lost a big part of his higher percentage shots, hope he doesn’t just become a jump shooter and nothing more

Losing that fat will help with his speed and explosiveness. His pull up jumper from midrange will be even more unstoppable. Melo will drop 29 a game and the Knicks will win 29 games.

I’ve been on this site a few years. I’ve always enjoyed the info. You get more up to date news on here all around, than most legit sports news sites. But recently, it’s been hard to log in and read some of these threads. The trolling, and the 15 year olds that get on here and talk nonsense is getting difficult to handle. I know this is a forum to talk opinion and stuff like that and maybe I’m just getting too old now but it’s crazy how uneducated some people seem to be about basketball and sports fitness in general and how cocky and self satisfying those same uneducated posters are. You can’t seriously get on here and say that the decision guys like LeBron and Melo are making about their bodies and games are terrible and stupid. These guys clearly, I mean clearly, know what they are doing. They are the games best players and athletes. You don’t know sh**. They make hundreds of millions if dollars and have the best trainers and chefs in the world telling them how to eat and work out. If Melo is dropping 15-20 lbs to elongate his career or to be quicker at 30, trust me, it’s the right decision. And conversely, let’s not act like Melo isn’t already a volume jump shooter. He doesn’t spend nearly enough time on the block as he should. And his body has gotten fitter and thinner just about every year since he’s been in NY especially. He’s fine. Like one poster said up there, he’ll still score 25+ and the Knicks will win 25-35 games. So really, this is irrelivent anyway.

Amen. The inability to watch the game with an savvy or evaluate a player beyond a basic stat line is ridiculous.  I do think a lot of it is young or inexperienced fans.  The mixtape generation is missing the nuance of the game.  Numbers tell part of the story, but the ability of most people to understand advanced metrics is pretty limited.  Melo is going to be what Melo always was – just a little less puffy.  Like you indicate, I doubt many of these guys at the top of the game are making poor diet and fitness choices.  I am very interesting to see way a svelte and ripped LeBron plays.  A thinner, fitter Melo might also make a difference, though he’d probably be better off losing 220 pounds in the form of J R Smith.

Wow nice long post basically saying nothing, melo losing that weight will change his game that was my point, his low post was a big part of his game, made him the most complete scorer in the game, now he looks like Durant, so he’ll be out of the post, this weight loss is relavent when talking how it may affect his game, a few pounds lighter is all he needed, if Barkley at 6’4" didn’t have the size he did when playing, he wouldn’t have been the same player, do u understand that???? You think if Barkley was 6’4" 200 lbs he’d be one of the greatest power forwards of all time, seriously, know something about basketball before you post, losing that much weight will impact his game, and definitely his low post game. If u are looking for news and not opinions quit reading the part of the website where people are to create post of there opinions, and just because u say at the end of your high school bench doesn’t make it ok for u to talk about basketball cuz u barely made the team and u definitely didn’t play scrub

I have to ask – did you actually see Barkely play in his prime?  He didn’t become the force he was until he shed ofver 40 pounds, going from the "Round Mound Of Rebound" at Auburn to an all around force of nature in the NBA.  The guy wasn’t an All Star until he lost weight.  The other thing most people miss is that Barkley’s basketball IQ was immense.  He is one more reason that the top of the 1984 draft was as good as any.  Barkley was a beast, but he didn’t reach that status until he took his fitness and weight seriously.

@jjmass, yes he might lose some strength, negligable strength, but force=mass*acceleration, if he’s able to accelerate at a higher rate than that force will not suffer due to a lack of mass, but he will also extend his career due to lack of punishment on his knees and ankles. I agree there is something to be said about fat man strength but show me where it says he lost 15lbs? and also show me how it’s a fact he lost strength? do you have specific test results that show this? I’m sure he could have but don’t claim facts without backup.

Also it’s your first week posting on here, no need to start putting people on blast for "never touching a ball" comes off as immature and in poor taste.

Take a look at the photo and tell me he didn’t lose 20 plus lbs, his low post game will suffer, I’m the biggest melo fan there is, I was just stating I hope his game doesn’t go pure outside shots, don’t talk to me about being a user for a week, I’ve been looking at nbadraft.net for probably close to 10 years, I got locked out of my email n forgot this password so I had to create new, lastly I’m putting people on blast because if you say you seen Melos pic and think his post game and low post rebounding and over all low post game doesn’t hurt you don’t know basketball, if you don’t know how Melos size contributed to his game you know know his game, my only point was it looks like he lost a lot of weight, and as a fan hope it doesn’t turn him into a outside the paint player, obviously I know the pros to losing weight, quickness, easier on the body, but don’t sit here n tell me a big part of Melos game wasn’t his ability to back guys down and further more don’t try to tell me if you seen the reason pics, you don’t have to wonder if that part of his game and his higher percentage shots won’t take a hit, he had a few pounds to take off yes, but I was just shocked at how small he his now

Its hard to really justify exactly how much weight he lost by a picture. They have put pics of Lebron up and he looks the same as he would mid season, so prob not as much as 20lbs, second initially will you loose some strength with weight loss? Yes, but you can regain that back by working out and adding muscle mass to rather than body fat. And regards to his post game you don’t have to be big and strong to be effective in the post, jordan, kobe both have effective post games, Dirk or Gasol will not win anybody over in the weight room and look at their post game compared to a bigger stronger Dwight Howard. Melo post skill is what makes him good not how strong or how much he ways. It may even improve because his first step will be quicker if they try to put a bigger defender on him.

It’s all about connecting the dots. If the bad joke gets a guy to see that nothing good comes from being a hotheaded jerk (ala Kevin Ward Jr, Tony Stewart, The OP) then it’s a bad joke worth making. Not everyone is going to get literally killed for letting their dickheaded emotions get the best of them, but they will get figuratively destroyed in other ways.

It’s all about balance. Hope you understand.

This site is regularly referenced by ESPN and other mainstream news sources.  When you look at the work that the site administrators put in and the knowledgeable posts by guys like Joe Wolf, you can see why.  You have 10 posts and are averaging -6 points per post.  This isn’t the ultimate measurement, but it gives and indication where you stand in the pecking order here.  It is downright stupid to say that Melo’s fitness and visbile weight loss is going to ruin his overall game.  The only thing stupider are the posts saying the MKG has improved his J or that player X, Y or Z is a Krypt.  You ought to read an absorb for awhile,.  Like they say, it is better to be silent and thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.

PS,J-ass: I have watched basketball since you had to tune in at midnight to see a game on the USA Network. I played against Magic in HS (we got smashed). I played competitively until I was 40, at point where this 6′ 2" white guy could still dunk. I’ve coached boys and girls at multiple levels and have had 3 undefeated regular seasons and two of girls I coached from 3rd grade until JV in HS pulled Division I scholarships. Hold your "basketball knowledge," kid. You can’t carry my jockstrap when it comes to this sport. You are making yourself look stupid. If you are so d*mn knowledgeable, what is your resume? My guess is it is pretty short.  Go get some actual experience. Until then you should use your 7th grade English skills to read and absorb. As your generation says – SMH.

Isn’t the point to change his game? His defense has been at an all time low these past few seasons, and lowering his body fat percentage will undoubtedly improve his lateral speed, quickness and footwork.

You act as if Melo’s production mainly comes down on the block, but if you’ve watched him the past couple years, you’ll know he settles for a lot of jumpers when compared to when he was younger and would do more work off the drive and down in the post.

Only .191 % of Melo’s shots came within 3 feet this past season, and .078% from 3-10 feet. That is only .269% of his total production coming within 10 feet. Yes, at 240-250 lbs, but look at how much more of his production came within 10 feet early in his career when he was closer to 230 lbs….

At age 22. .422% of his shots came within 3 feet, and .081 came from 3-10 feet. That is .503% of his total shots coming within 10 feet, and his shooting percentage down low was much higher as well. Anthony shot .641% from 3 feet and in during 06-07 ( When he averaged 28.9 ppg ) and .407 from 3-10 feet. During 13-14, he shot just .589% from within 3 feet and .32% from 3-10 feet.

Melo’s weight gain has caused him to settle for more jumpers, and take more shots while just camping out on the perimeter or putting a move on his guy, and taking a 16 footer. That’s fine because he’s a great jumper shooter, but his weight didn’t make him a better more effective post player. He gets less shots than ever down on the block, and hits fewer of them.

Melo used to dunk, he used to be explosive, he used to put in work on the block. He doesn’t really do that anymore, and his conditioning is a reason why. He’s evolved, but a leaner trimmer 230 lb Melo is a good thing, because fat Melo was putting up points, but his team wasn’t winning, and he greatly regressed as a defender.

He might lose some strength, but I believe this is smart for him. People either forget or don’t know that Melo has a cartilage issue in one of his knees. He’s had surgery once or twice on it and has dealt with swelling, etc in the past.

I don’t think people realize just how much wear and tear an athlete naturally puts on their knees. When you get to a certain age, it’s smart to lessen the pressure on them.

i think when kendrick perkins lost all that weight it effected him, becuz he used that extra girth to bully people in the paint…melo is much more skilled ,capable is scoring in a variety of ways …and the weight lost will take some pressure off his joints and also it’ll help his endurance…..

I know in 4 months no one will be talking about Melos weight loss for two reason, his game will not be drastically effected and the Knicks will be irrelevant.

Z Bo lost weight a few years ago and it hindered his post game and his rebounding.  Then he got hurt.

Zach needs his size to do what he does best.  He bullies guys inside.

… in that one pic Carmelo Anthony is looking like George Gervin…  maybe TOO skinny?

It should help Carmelo extend his prime though (high scoring) if not his entire career.

Either way, I think he is a sleeper MVP candidate if you think that great duos like LeBron/Love, Durant/Westbrook, and CP3/Blake will cancel each other out.  He will probably be gunning for another scoring title too.

I am liking the Eastern Conference All Stars this year: Rose, Irving, John Wall, and Rajon Rondo as point guard choices.  Beal, Oladipo, and Wade at 2 guard, LeBron, and Carmelo at the 3, Kevin Love and Chris Bosh at the 4 with Noah, Roy Hibbert, and Al Jefferson at center.

A small ball lineup of Rose, Wade, Carmelo, LeBron, and Love should be impossible to stop.

People are reading way too much into that picture, angles lighting and clothing can be deseving. If you’ve ever seen an NBA player in person they look much skinnier than expected. I was shocked at how lean Wade looked when he was working out at LMU last summer but looked just the same when I saw him on TV.

marathon runners bodies…   Jabari came in at 15% body fat and everyone said how fat he was…  15% body fat is fat for an NBA player, but it’s not big for regular individuals…   You should be able to see your abs at 11%…   With that said Wade’s drop in weight was needed because his game is dictated by his speed…   If he wasn’t able to get a first step on you (like it showed in the Finals) then he wouldn’t be able to do much damage…  Melo, I suspect was around 15 to 18%… Which now he looks as if he lost that fat and actually look healthy the first time in his career…  You can finally see the definition in his arms…  Something you could never see in his career at all…

I tried to describe the difference in losing body fat compared to losing muscle in a short amount of time…  When you lose muscle, you lose strength if it’s been done over a short time…   Losing fat, there is no substance in fat that will allow you to use it for strength…  NOTHING…   Plus Melo’s game is more finesse than LeBron’s so for him to get smaller it’s understandable…  But when your game is mostly power, it’s imperative to maintain your core strength and power…

MJ gained weight towards the end of his career to battle in the post and finishing through contact…  So, for people to say that the muscle won’t be needed is fooling themselves…   I like the weight drop for Melo and D Wade…  I don’t like it for LeBron…

I think Melo looks good(pause). He actually looks like he has a basketball body instead of being a chubby killer.
