Tim49461ParticipantEveryone(Not on here, Knicks fans in general) seems confused by the Iman Shumpert pick but i have Theory. Call me crazy or in this site’s case me lots of Negative Points.
But here is what I’m thinking
The knicks have Zero tradeable assets right now. Iman is supposed to be a huge athletic freak and defensive specialist. Now someone you may know defense doesnt really fit the play style of NYK so it got me wondering what are the NYK plans in the future and I forgot about one thing!
The Knicks/Steve Nash want to be reunited with Mikey. Knicks always have talked about getting Nash.
As some of you know the Suns were highly considering Iman with the 13th pick. But wanted to play it safer with a PF. The Knicks really dont have any trade assets to give the Suns anything special….Yet.
That is why with the draft pick Iman seems to make sense. If he starts developing i see the Knicks looking for a third team to get involved and someone look to get 1st round pick in the future if not the 2012 draft.
It would be:
Suns get: Iman Shumpert, 1st Round Pick
Knicks get: Steve Nash
Third Team: Something the knicks would have to offer
I believe the 1st intention of the pick was this and if Iman somehow develops into more then they look even more brilliant and keep him.

GlenTaylorSucksParticipantHaven’t the Knicks traded away most of their first rounders for the next 3-5 yrs or so?

HitsterParticipantThe Knicks were rumoured to be trying to get a first rounder for Anthony Randolph but when the Melo trade went down, Randolph went to the T-Wolves.
The Knicks may have ideas for Shumpert be it to be a roster player as he gives them depth to their backcourt or maybe he might help them set a trade up.
If the Knicks did try for Nash they would need a 3rd team to perhaps take Billups and I honestly think they may not have decided what to do about trying for a 3rd star player next summer eg CP3, D-Will or Dwight Howard or whether to add complimentary pieces this summer arond Melo and STAT.
Also Phoenix have tended a qualifying offer to Aaron Brooks so they may not want another PG yet until they decide which way to go forward.
I personally thought the Knicks may draft a big but they maybe get one via FA so Shumpert was a decent pick to play around Fields and Billups.

NardDog NationParticipantI think your thinking is certainly creative. Whether or not it is realistic might be a different story (no insult intended). The Suns were talking about moving Nash for the 2nd pick in the draft, so I think it would be a huge stretch for them to settle on Iman Shumpert and filler. I’m not commenting on the wisdom of their logic in demanding so much but simply that this is their asking price.

Tim49461ParticipantNo insult taken Narddog dont worry. But at this point i have talked it over with a bunch of people and the Suns will only trade him to a contender. Of the contenders…
Boston, Miami, LA.
Are the only ones that NEED/or would want him.
Boston-A solid back up for Rajon. While Nash splitting time with him. Nash would be used to mentor Rajon as much as he would be expected to contribute.
Miami- Has nothing they can possibly trade so they are out of the question
LA.- Can try to trade Odom and a 1st rounder but the only thing that does is make them contenders for the next 3 to 4 years TOPS.
Outside of those, Nash would be leaving to a NON contender, or the Nash get nothing in return.
So basically as a huge Nash fan since he reunited with my beloved Suns in 05. I just want to see him win instead of dying out in Phx. And i want to see Nash and Mikey back together. It might bring a tear to my eye to see that Hardwood Wizardery again.

NardDog NationParticipantTim, I think the Magic would benefit greatly from having Nash. Their looking to make a splash of a trade and this would certainly qualify. Jameer Nelson is just an above average talent IMO but he is significantly younger than Nash and a decent replacement in the interm. Obviously, a lot more pieces would be needed to make the trade work but I think it’s a start. Unfortunately, the Magic are a bit strapped for assets so you might have to settle on having them absorb Frye’s, Warrick’s and Josh Childress’ horrible contracts in exchange for younger players (e.g. JJ Redick), draft picks and expiring contracts (of which the Magic have none). But I think this makes sense for both franchises since the Magic are trying to appease Dwight Howard and the Suns would be looking for a clean slate.
I’d love to see Nash go out a champion myself but I don’t think he’d be a good fit with the Knicks. We’re pretty much a half-court roster and benefit more by having a bruiser like Billups until CP3/Deron becomes available.

bloodshyParticipant1. Every playoff team in the east knows they have to beat Wade/LBJ or DRose if they’re going to succeed. And the Knicks were drafting to develop someone that could at least slow down an elite point/wing player when they meet those specific matchups. This kid is a freak athlete that has a shot to at least stay in front of elite players.
2. Freak athletes who lack identifiable scoring skills can still have success in a run-and-gun offense. The kid will blow by people who aren’t set and his lack of a brain won’t be tested as much since they don’t run real offensive sets most of the time. When I heard this pick it made a lot of sense to me–I was a little surprised by the booing.

The only problem i have with Nash going to Orlando is. Sure they would get Jameer back and i see most likely taking back Gilbert’s horrible contract. But Orlando would refuse to throw in a 1st rounder just incase Dwight leaves they have some hope in the draft. Plus i think Orlando would be to scared that once 2012 hit Nash would leave for NYK and just take Vet. Min. anyway.
As a Suns fan i would accept Jameer but whatever they do with Nash a 1st rounder needs to be involved.
