    http://blogs.sacbee.com/sports/kings/archives/2013/07/kings-will-not-match-offer-to-keep-tyreke-evans.html

The Kings will not match the four-year, $44 million offer sheet that Tyreke Evans has agreed to sign with the New Orleans Pelicans. According to sources close to the situation, the new Kings management group instead is hoping to close Thursday on a sign-and-trade agreement involving Pelicans point guard Greivis Vasquez and backup center Robin Lopez.

No deals can be finalized until July 10.

Because Evans, the 2009-10 Rookie of the Year, is a restricted free agent, the Kings have the right to match any offer he receives in the open market. However, team officials reportedly believe the offer is excessive and would damage the team’s long-term salary cap flexibility. They pulled their four-year, $52 million offer to free agent Andre Iguodala Tuesday when the Denver Nuggets swingman refused to make a firm commitment.

Evans’ future with the Kings became less certain when the club selected Kansas shooting guard Ben McLemore last Thursday in the NBA Draft. Evans, who was shifted from point guard to small forward, and most recently, shooting guard, averaged 15.2 points, 4.4 rebounds and 3.5 assists last season.

Bottom line is, the Kings didn’t think Evans was worth as much as the Pelicans were willing to offer. And in return they got a guy who has double the assist percentage of the highest on our team. And a back up for Cousin’s in the process. So well I’m happy.

If the Kings match, they can do whatever they want with Evans. They could just trade him to somebody else. The leverage they have is the fact Evans is a restricted free agent. Nothing can be signed until the 10th. So its either the Kings get something back, or they match the offer and get something back from another team for Evans. Kings have all the leverage here.

I read NO will need to waive or trade away lopez but why would they want to give up Vasquez. If they dont match the offer what kind of leverage do the Kings really have? somebody school me?

Matching would have been foolish anyway imo

It’s a win win for both teams. I knew the kings would want to get rid of tyreke this off season. For pelicans well they have a deep roster now. I just wonder who will have to embrace a sixth man role between Evans and Gordon.

        Vasquez to Sac*

But Kings are still exploring other trade options and still considering matching offer according to USA Today

Maybe the Pelicans think it’s possible for Holiday-Gordon-Evans to be their 1-2-3.

To be honest though, I kind of liked their roster without Tyreke, Lopez is not that bad of a centre and is still young, I thought he would fit well with Davis. They had a starting 5 of Holiday-Gordon-?-Davis-Lopez – I thought they’d just straight up trade Vasquez for an adequate small forward and have a good young roster.

They really need a centre now, Davis is certainly not one. Maybe figure out a trade or sign a guy like Dalembert on a short term deal.

I really wonder what Dell Demps is doing in NO.

I still think Gordon could be traded. It’ll just be after the 10th, when Gordon doesn’t have to approve the trade.

Apparently, Holiday, Gordon and Evans are friends, which I am sure helps, but surely they don’t attempt to keep all 3. It would be an interesting experiment if they did, but I think they would be better off to trade a guy like Gordon if they really want Evans and find a way to continue to round out their roster.

I would look to keep Lopez and Vasquez though. I think if you can trade Gordon then even if Vasquez doesn’t start he could be a 6th man getting plenty of minutes and the 3 of them should be interchangeable as far as being able to play together. Basically a trade of Lopez and/or Vasquez is a way to keep the Kings from matching it, but I don’t think the Kings would match. It’s a gamble like Phx dealt with last year.

Granger would stunt the growth of the young team in NO. All he does is shoot, why would they want him?

So if they complete a sign and trade and sends Grevis out does this mean Tyreke goes back to the sf position? I don’t like him and Gordon playing in the lineup together they both needs the ball. Gordon sits another season from injuries and not to mention when he was restricted he signed with PHX before the Hornets matched so I say they should trade him while he has value and let Tyreke play the SG spot. At least that’s most logical.

Gordon can play with or without the ball.

Both Holiday and Gordon can play without the ball. It’s Evans in my opinion who struggles the most playing without the ball. He’s got to close up some of the holes in his game.

The Pacers can’t afford Gordon. George’s extension is coming. The great thing about Granger is that his contract comes off of the books after the season, while Gordon still has two years left after next season. I don’t think the Pacers will trade Granger. Larry Bird has said he’ll not go into the tax under any circumstance.

As far as the Pelicans… They had to get rid of Lopez anyway. They needed that cap space. There was talk that they were just going to release him if they couldn’t find a trade.

Vasquez… Even though he had a good season, the Pelicans made it a priority to upgrade his position. It’s clear his future isn’t in NO.

They may have to trade lopez for draft picks. Lopez did pretty well last season just for him to get waived
