PureshooterParticipantWatching the Celtics/Hawks game the other night, it occured to me that about mid-way through the 3rd Quarter I had barely heard Josh Smith’s name mentioned by the announcers. I actually forgot he was playing. Here was his stat line:
Date Opponent Result MIN FGM-A 3PM-A FTM-A OFF DEF REB AST STL BLK TO PF PTS Regular Dec 16 @ BOS L 90 – 102 34 0 – 8 0 – 1 1 – 2 1 3 4 3 2 0 2 2 1 But it isn’t just from this game. Here is is stat line from a game earlier in the year against Boston:
Date Opponent Result MIN FGM-A 3PM-A FTM-A OFF DEF REB AST STL BLK TO PF PTS Regular Nov 22 vs. BOS L 76 – 99 22 0 – 3 0 – 0 2 – 2 0 3 3 0 0 0 2 2 2 He has had a pretty good season this year, but he has been a complete non-factor against the Celtics. Is it Boston’s defense, are the Hawks not going to him enough, or is it just mental from his side of things? Watching this week’s game he seemed very frustrated at times and just never got into the flow of things.

sacphil_08Participantit has alot to do with bostons defense. guys that arent able to shoot very well and rely on getting to the rim see their driving lanes cut off and it obviously gets him out of his comfort zone and i believe he plays PF for boston meaning hes guarded by KG who is obviously no slouch on Defense

JoeWolf1Joe Johnson being hurt doesn’t help either, he’s needed to take a more offensive role than he has in the past. I agree with sacphil’s analysis on their D and in addition without Johnson to draw more attention away there aren’t the cuts to the basket that were there for him with Johnson on the floor.

PureshooterParticipantHe just seems out of it. He isn’t even rebounding or blocking shots in these games. And it isn’t as if he is just scoring a little below his average of 15 a game, he is averaging 1.5 ppg in their Boston series. I feel like at least some of it has to be mental.

SteroidParticipantMaybe it’s just me, but Josh Smith seems to not step it up in "big games", and I’m sure the Celtics defense had a hand in it also.
