qDizzle32ParticipantAs it looks like he is beginning to get closer to reclassifying to the 2015 class, how old could Maker really be? As there are no records of when one was born in Africa, he has been rumored to be from 1-3 years older than his actual birthdate of 2/25/1997. The fact that he didn’t represent Australia’s U17 team in the World Championships but did play in AAU tournaments during that same time as it was going on, somewhat hints a clue. Other African players such as Bismack Biyombo (points the obvious that he was not born in 1992 when he responded no comment as he was asked about his age) and Ater Majok (Should have been ineligible for the 2011 draft) have been able to get away with it even with the NBA’s professionalism.
On the other note, I wonder if Shabazz Muhammad would still be listed as born in 1993 if that record never got exposed while he was at UCLA.

TenSecondTomParticipantYou forgot to mention Greg Oden, who with his appearance combined with his bad knee, should’ve been playing in the senior citizens’ league by the time he entered the league. As for Thon, there isn’t much evidence to suggest he Is older only that he could be so there’s always a chance. Interesting aspect to bring up about a guy who is regarded as the "next best thing"

ChoppyParticipantSo how old is Emmanuel Mudiay? I just read he was born in Zaire. This site questions every African born players ages right? So why the focus on Maker? Is it because he’s not American? Seriously sick of all this talk on Makers alleged age.

B-ball fanParticipantHe is so thin that it looks like he is a guy who had a quick growth spurt at a young age.

phila9012ParticipantI get what you are saying, but no body actually knows. His potential is a lot more if he is 17 as opposed 20. Baseball players in latin america buy other kids birth certificates all the time. With the amount of money at stake it is worth the risk to most people especially coming from south sudan. Shabazz did it and he was american, but it is reasonable to bring it up. It wasn’t because he was from South Sudan, it was because he actually doesnt have a birth certificate, thus making it more likely that the parents or he would lie. It could even be that they don’t remember and aired on him being younger than he is because that would help him the most

ChoppyParticipantWhy would being younger help him? He was five. In Australia that would put him in Kindergarten (our first year of formalised education) so he would be on the same footing as everyone else. There would be no reason to lie. Unless they were clairvoyant and could predict at 5 that he was destined to be an NBA lottery pick…

phila9012ParticipantStudies have shown kids who start school when they are older do better. So if they said he was five but was 6 or even 7 he would have an advantage over all the other kids. Then he would be hitting puberty a year or 2 before everyone else and he would have way more confidence. Why would shabazzs parents lie about his age because it gave him an advantage. Why do a lot of very good basketball players get held back in 8th grade then reclassify because it gives them an advantage and when they get to high school their freshmon year is like their sophmore year and they draw attention for being a freshman and if they need it a fourth year of high school to improve. Andrew wiggins stayed back in 8th grade and it wasn’t because he was dumb, it was because for athletic purposes. Thon Maker reclassified once he knew he was a top prospect. So he was held back in 8th grade for what was clearly athletic purposes and if they were willing to have him stay back in 8th grade they would definitely be willing to say he was born earlier than he was.

Rip255Yeah, I think his height-weight growth ratio suggests he is around the right age. I’m not unbelievably high on Maker like others are (completely justifiable). I’d be looking at guys like Simmons, Brown, Skal etc first.
I’m unsure how much Maker considers himself truly "Australian". He’s lived in several countries, and has been reluctant to confirm his allegiance to the national teams.
But, an under 19 Australian World Championship team is a legitimate threat the the US.
Ben Simmons – #1 in his class
Thon Maker – ‘Nuff said
Isaac Humphries – Best Bigman (along with Diamond Stone) at U17 World Champs & All-Tournament Team. High School Senior year in US.
Dejan Vaseljevic – U17 All Tournament SG (lights out). Drazen Petrovic 2.0
The team is deep too.

ChoppyParticipantIt wouldn’t surprise me if he declares allegiance to Team USA (much like Kyrie Irving did). He has only spent 5-10 years of his life in Australia before moving to the US for basketball. His guardian, Edward Smith, is an American who was living in Australia at the time and is well known for doing ANYTHING to promote Thon and get him the most exposure.

HitsterParticipantThon lived in Australia from when he was five and their education system is fairly good as far as I know, so I would think they would classify him fairly well. It’s not like a prospect was discovered in a more remote country at 16/17 and due to their size are encouraged to play basketball.
I’d say Thon’s age seems legit IMO. I recall another well respected basketball site once listed Thabeet as being two years older than his generally recognised age and they have since gone with the consensus age.
Mount Mutombo was long rumoured to be older than he claimed which could make his long career even more remarkable.
