HitsterParticipantHow can the Lakers send their 2011 first round pick to the Nets when their 2010 first rounder went to Memphis as part of the Pau Gasol trade. Hence they have given away two successive first round picks, the Knicks cannot give away a first rounder until 2014 and Miami had to stagger their first rounders when they did S and T’s for Bosh and LeBron.
Can anyone explain how the Houston-Nets-Lakers trade can thus work?
Also is Billy King at the Nets trying to do a Sam Presti and get hold of as many first rounders as he can. If you think outside of the Melo rumours then for a struggling team to stockpile as many picks as possible does make sense.

rlabubbaParticipantOnce the pick has passed it doesn’t count towards the successive picks traded. (Since the 2010 draft is over, it has no influence on the 2011 picks).

TyroberParticipantYeah the rule is you cannot trade consecutive FUTURE first round picks. So I guess technically a team can never have a first round pick if they want to trade or sell them

jaysmith1987ParticipantI know this is off topic but I think this was a good trade for the lakers for one there a team that is to good for a late first round pick to actually make an immediate impact on so its no reason to gurantee a player money who is not gonna make a difference especially when they’ll have kobe and gasol running full speed for few more years and the way the draft is know there is always a good amount of first round talent slipping to the second round. I mean look at there draft this year Ebanks and Character insecond round to players who will be productive in this league as either starters or good role players in second round. The two made a championship teams roster that is stacked top to bottom.

sacphil_08Participantthe lakers were apart of the deal so anything is possible… its the honest to god truth. david stern is somewhere petting a lioness painted purple and gold with the lakers logo across its back hoping to devise a way for the lakers to play themselves in the nba finals forever and ever

HitsterParticipantCheers for sorting that out, so if a team did a deal each year they could effectively never have a first round pick!
The Lakers will always have limited use for late first rounders and an early 2nd rounder does give them more flexability if they sign someone say from Europe they would like to bring over. Joe Smith will give them a bit of extra frontcourt depth and they do save probably $8million in salary and luxury tax which won’t harm their profits or allows more flexability to sign an extra FA down the line.

BKKnicksfanParticipantHouston is doing something…I don’t know what, but there up to something.
New Jersey can stockpile picks but having Lopez and Harris makes me doubt they will be a top 5 draft team anytime soon. I suggest moving Devin Harris.
