Day 1 is in the books & apart from Kawhi most of the bigger names have found their homes. So who did well & who did poorly in your opinion?

    Winners:

Brooklyn – Clearly the winners of the day getting KD & Kyrie to team up. Will be interesting to see how KD recovers, but he could easily slide to PF is he loses a step. They also got DeAndre Jordan.

Indiana – Here I was thinking that we were about to sign Ricky Rubio & lose Bogdanovic, well we lost Bogdanovic for good reason as well. We brought in an absolutely perfect complement to Oladipo in Malcolm Brogdon, a 50/40/90 member who will see an expanded role for us & a heck of a defensive guard. Also got Jeremy Lamb who is a capable starter while Vic is out & potentially a very potent 6th man.

Utah – After they acquisition of Mike Conley they then added Bojan Bogdanovic who will be a perfect fit for them as a stretch-4. He is an excellent shooter, strong bodied & has a decent wingspan to boot. He also showed a more expansive offensive game once Oladipo went down & will be a legit 3rd option for the Jazz who appear all in.

    Losers:

New York – While I like Julius Randle & Bobby Portis, paying both of them seems a bit redundant & not too mention Taj Gibson. On top of all that though, they cleared a huge amount of cap to ultimately miss on all major free agents.

Charlotte – Well you lost Kemba & insanely over paid for his replacement in Terry Rozier. Charlotte will be painful to watch next season & they lost their 2nd best player/scorer Jeremy Lamb as well, here’s hoping for a high draft pick to ease the pain.

Milwaukee – This may be a bit rough for some people, but I don’t really like what they did. They lost Brogdon to Indiana, granted for 1st rounder & 2 2nds but they ultimately couldn’t afford him after giving Middleton who is a nice player an absurd contract all be it a necessary one. They brought back Lopez which is smart, but also lost Mirotic (as did the rest of the league), ultimately though they have gone backwards from last year. Brogdon was the most likely guy to improve out of their core & they shipped him out.

    Neutral moves:

Boston, Philadelphia, Golden State, Miami all lost some talent, but replaced it with more talent. Miami getting Jimmy may be a win, but they don’t really have anyone else to pair with him. Philadelphia lost Jimmy but got J-Rich & Horford which is a heck of a good pick up, but Jimmy was their closer interesting to see what happens. Boston lost Irving & Horford, I think Kemba is an improvement from locker standpoint & we need to see what they do about the C spot. GSW did well to get Russell, I never would have expected that. He & Curry will probably be a bit like Lillard/McCollum, but shipping out Iggy & no Klay means they will be lacking majorly on D.

I like what Detroit did with getting Rose, I have no idea what Sac-Town are up to especially that CoJo deal & looks like Houston will be running it back with the same team.

Boston lost Horford, Irving, Rozier.  They need to resign Morris.  Boston got worse Day 1 while Philly and Brooklyn got better.

how did philly get better? jimmy butler and redick is better than horford and richardson just from a pure talent standpoint and thats before you get into fit which makes it even worse for the sixers since they are already a big team that needs shooters around simmons and embiid. Im not even sure horford and embidd playing together is a good thing on either end of the court.

I disagree. Horford can easily play the four or five.  Harris moves to his more natural slashing role from the four to the three and Richardson, while not being a better shooter tan J.J, is a far better defender and shot creator. Sixers will pivot to more PnR and move away from the dribble handoffs required to get J.J. a shot

compared to the Knicks the Nets for sure had the better day but I wouldn’t be so sure about the Nets hitting homerun after homerun with their signings in the long run and the short run. KD won’t play. ext year at all and who knows what kind of player KD will at 32 years old coming from that devasting innury? Kyrie and his strange antics combined with his injury history don’t really scream relationship made in heaven either.

Yes even if KD doesn’t play at all and if Kyrie misses his usual 20 games they haven’t lost any significant players compared to last year if you don’t count D-Lo who is a wash to me with Kyrie on the court to be honest. The big difference is the expectations and the new identity they will have with the new packing order. This could very well end up in a disaster if injuries strike them and the DeAndre signing doesn’t really impress me either. He is on a heavy decline and since he is bulking up more and more the last couple of years he is nothing more then a rebounder, averaged less then 1 bpg last year and not a rim protector at all to me anymore and we haven’t even talked about Allen’s role next to Jordan yet which might work but is far from a great pairing to me on paper.

Overall the Nets got two of the biggest names of this FA class but also by far the biggest question marks as well as many years of immense salary payments to injury prone players. We‘ll see…

Oh and there is only one Kawhi left and almost every important player already committed to his old or new team and the Clippers and Lakers have nothing to show for so far. If especially the Lakers miss out on Kawhi they are the biggest losers so far but that is not the topic of this day 1 thread…

I’m surprised of all these sign & trade, it’s perhaps the Day 1 of free agency with the most sign & trade I’ve seen so far.

HUGE winners. Kept Rodney Hood on an amazingly team friendly deal and they got Hezonja, a player with loads of untapped potential. These low risk high reward moves have your team in the WCF despite being barely slated to make playoffs. Very pleased with Portland’s entire offseason altogether.

I’m disappointed they let Aminu walk. Hezonja is garbage. As far as the warriors go, curry can play SG now like Iverson did.

I know it’s your homer team but you’re way overvaluing Jeremy Lamb. A capable starter/potent 6th man, have you seen him play before? He’s a mediocre player at best. He got some decent shots in Charlotte because outside of Kemba they had zero scoring. On a much better team like Indiana he will probably not get much burn. I’d venture to say he will be more of an 8th man than a 6th.

The Brogdan pickup was very nice though.

I don’t find anything wrong with what the OP wrote. I mean, Lamb did average about 15 points in the 55 games he started for the Hornets. He averaged 16 as a reserve. He’ll start until Oladipo returns, then he’ll prob be the first guard off of the bench.

What I like about him is he can create his own offense off of the dribble, which is a player the Pacers can use. His best ball is ahead of him.

Different player then he was in OKC. Hes been a model of consistency for Charlotte and his usage shouldve been higher but they have been half integrating young guys like Bacon and Monk into the rotation limiting his oppurtunity. Hes a decent scoring punch.

Oh for sure, he’s definitely improved since OKC I’m not denying that. But this guy acting like he’s going to be some Lou Williams/Jamal Crawford type and that isn’t happening.

I’m that guy & at no point did I say he could be a 6th man of the year or something like that. So please don’t say things I didn’t.

I see a season of maybe 11-12ppg & 4-5rpg with some committed defense in there given he will be playing for a very defensive minded team. To me this is a very good 6th man, he is coming from a team that was an absolute shambles & he had to take on the 2nd option role which he isn’t designed for.

When he starts he will be expected to fill a 3&D role, likely being our 4th or 5th option behind Brogdon, Turner & Warren.

You just said he was a capable starter & a potential very potent 6th man. That sounds like a Lou Williams or Jamal Crawford to me, 11-12 points isn’t a capable starting SG or a potent 6th man. Now you’re just backtracking.

A “very potent 6th man” would be someone in the 15-20ppg range which he barely reached as a starter last year on a team with absolutely no scoring outside of Kemba. Thank you for proving my original post correctly though.

Yup I think 11-12ppg because Victor Oladipo will be back at some point. These are the numbers I believe he will put up in his 6th man role. As a starter 14-15ppg like he did in Charlotte.

Danny Green is a very capable starter & he averaged 10ppg, PJ Tucker a very capable starter & averaged 7ppg, so points per game don’t always line up with whether someone is good or not.

Jeremy Lamb has very good tools to be an outstanding defender as he is 6’6 with 6’11 wingspan & he has never been on a team that is committed to defense as Indiana is. He will have a defined role as well, in Charlotte it was a mess, just watch Kemba do his thing & then pick up the scraps.

love what philly did bringing in big al and richardson. horford for the first time ever gets to play the 4 and will be an absolute great compliment to embeast. with jj leaving richardson helps ease that loss

New York are terrible. They sign three power forwards and now a point guard when they have DSJ and Frank. They now have 14 guys who would all think they are getting minutes –

DSJ – Elfrid Payton – Ntilikina

    Ellington – Trier – Dotson

Barrett –  Bullock – Iggy Braz

    Randle – Portis – Knox

    Robinson – Gibson

This is going to be ugly. The best possible lineup there is a lotto team,  even if everyone got along and there are no issues. Which of these FAs are you going to replace next year?

I dont see a lot of winners to be honest!

Nets will be when KD is back, but will Kyrie and Jordan be that much better than Russell and Allen? Does Levert lose touches with Kyrie there?

The Jazz are very small if Gobert goes down. No Crowder, no Favors.

Pacers did well getting Brogdon and Warren, but lost Thad, Collison and Bogdanovic.

Philly is the big winner. Horford and Richardson are very good pickups for losing Butler. If Thybulle is good enough to start, Horford can even run with the second unit.

Im pretty sure Jazz signed Ed Davis to a 2yr $10mil contract. Jazz look good. With that exception I agree with you. Until Kawhi makes his move and Durant gets healthy not much has actually changed.

     Winner – Golden State

Although Iggy is one of my favourite players, he is 35yo, they flipped him for Dangelo russell – all star talent
