WITNESS2014ParticipantAny ideas for Cavs offseason? Right now were are projected to get 9th pick but that could change now that Kyrie is out for a few weeks. They have cap space and a few trade assets and some early 2nd round picks. Can they trade a guy like Varejao for a late first rounder to a contender? They probably wont be able to lure big any free agents this year. Do they try to trade Thompson? I think they will try to keep Irving and Waiters, but besides that I can see anybody going. I would like to see them build through the draft one or 2 more times with a new GM. If they could get a guy like Gary Harris then I think that truly solitifies their backcourt. We have a glaring hole at sf so maybe they try to get James Young or Rodney Hood. In the 2nd round get a guy like Russ Smith or WCS if he is there. Could they trade one of the bigs for another 1st rounder and try to get somebody like Adrian Payne? They have a few different routes they could take. Thoughts?

GlenTaylorSucksParticipant…lol but in all seriousness, I have no idea what they do. They’re in realistic danger of losing Irving, they need to stop making stupid draft choices and questionable FA signings.

WITNESS2014ParticipantThat’s how I feel about it. If they really feel that Kyrie isn’t there long term it might be better to trade him high, as crazy as that sounds. Next year is going to be his fourth season and if they aren’t at least a 5th or 6th seed then I say no way in hell he stays and I cant blame him. I wonder what they could get for him though?

canesboy6ParticipantYeah I agree with you that you need to sell high on Kyrie. A pouty scorer who has never won anything and can’t stay healthy…..Take the couple good years you got out of him on rookie scale, and cash him out before he leaves you at the altar anyways.
Its not what Cavs fan want to hear, but the answer is to tank again IMHO. They will be reluctant to do it because they’ve been rebuilding, but when you squander picks the way they have, then the building through the draft strategy doesn’t work. I’d cash out for whatever assets they can and strip it for parts. I don’t see one foundational piece on that whole roster. Irving is good, Waiters is OK but I don’t think you’d find more than a late first rounder for him, and Thompson is the same as waiters. The rest is a wierd mix.
Bottom out properly and draft wisely this time around.

IhateusernamesParticipantThe Cavs would get a King’s Ransom for Irving I believe, but I think they have to try to put the right guys around him first. It’s not like they havent tried, they just keep bringing in the wrong guys. Perhaps a front office change should happen first.

rileymcshea3ParticipantI don’t think the Cavs should trade him because he is there only hope at becoming good again, but if push comes to shove and he wants out I think the Jazz would be a good trade partners. The Jazz have young pieces that the Cavs would need for a rebuilding while the Jazz need that star to push them over the edge.
Maybe Kyrie for Trey Burke, Enes Kanter, and there first round draft pick for this year(Projected 4th right now which isn’t high enough for the Jazz to take there beloved Jabari Parker)

WITNESS2014ParticipantI think the Cavs will want more if its just the 4th pick. Might even have to be both picks.

Rip255Kyrie is a great player, and I think he’ll be as good as Chris Paul when he’s in his prime. But he seems to be one of those guys that wants to play in a big market. He likes the media attention and has quite an ego, as can be seen by his challenging of Kobe in a game of 1 on 1.
He’s going to leave, so they should try and trade him. They’ll get good value, but not even value. A high draft pick and an emerging young player would seem a best case outcome.
The Cavs are in a tough spot as no-one really wants to play there. They have a bad reputation and Dan Gilbert is amongst the worst owners in the league.

tidhoParticipantlol @ the idea that NBA players need to play in a big market to garner media attention. Stars get national attention because they’re stars. The city they play in literally has no impact on this.
I won’t pretend to know what Kyrie wants to do, but if and when he makes it known to the organization that he isn’t in it for he long term I want him gone. Way to often he’s directly contributing to losses rather than wins. The Cavaliers had more than enough talent to win this season (not win it all, just win) but hero-ball killed their offense way too frequently.
lmao @ Dan Gilbert being one of the worst owners in the league.
With or without Kyrie, the Cavaliers simply need to start winning and guys will want to play there. Hopefully they’ll pick up a couple of spots in the lottery and maybe have a little luck. If they’re stuck around 8-10 Rodney Hood or my preference Kyle Anderson would help them a lot.

TheArtistPaysthePriceParticipantWe (fans) always act like the sky is falling. They are a bad basketball team, there’s about 12 of those such things in the NBA. They need to right the ship. They are handicapped by some past decisions, mainly rehiring Mike Brown instead of George Karl, ( I like Hollins but if you publicly mention you are not a fan of metrics, you shouldn’t be hired in 2014 unless you apologize). The draft picks could have been slightly better but even if they drafted perfectly they would still suck. They would be a 6/7 seed with exciting young peices but that doesn’t guarantee a leap next year, just look at Golden State.
Personally I would trade this 9th pick in the 2014 draft for Tom Thibodeau and then give him a 10 million dollar per season contract. I know it can’t happen but I would make it happen. Resign Deng and trade for Asik(only do this if you have Thibs), and your a 4 seed.
Seriously though, this is a big off season. They need to dump Jarret Jack, he has two more years at 6 million per season, that’s not unmovable. I wouldn’t be surprised if one of Andy Varejao, Zeller and Tristan Thompson doesn’t make it back next season. Unless Lebron is coming back then its no reason to keep Tristan Thompson, he is solid but has little room for improvement. He is represented by Rich Paul and Paul is at least half of the home games in Cleveland.
Mike Brown will never get the best of the Cavs young core.
I say keep trying to progress with flexibility in mind. Screw Kyrie, he is to injury prone to turn down a 5 year max contract, he will sign or be the most tradable asset in the NBA. He would have a rookie salary and can be traded for another rookie scale deal and a ton of picks without taking a bunch of bad contacts. I think he still "deserves" the 5 year max offer really just because. I would look to trade Tristan if Monroe would sign a soft 4 year max.
Hopefully Jack is gone and Gary Harris is there or get McBuckets. Free agency is a mess and there will be no help there. Maybe the Blazer’s flame out and Batum 12 million a year contract is on the table. Richard jefferson will probably get a 5 million dollar one year deal. There’s capped out teams like Golden State that might want to move a good young peice for a bad contract. Maybe Barnes and David Lee for Varejao and a lottery pick/Karasev or Tristan Thompson/Jack. They need to resign Hawes who is starting to struggle but at 6 or 7 million a season is a good deal.
It’s a tough deal to turn around the Cavs, but outside of Jack they don’t have one bad contract at all and have a bunch of picks.

hbomb3300ParticipantThe Kyrie injury was probably the best thing that could of happened to the Cavs. It reminds Kyrie how injury prone he really is and gives the Cavs a lot more leverage going into contract negotiations and will give them a better pick in the draft. Another asset people are forgetting about is Anthony Bennett. If he can work hard to improve this offseason and get in great shape (I admit this is a big IF) he could win most improved player next year.
