Bold Prediction: Marcus Smart Will Win Rookie Of The Year

My Past Scouting Report On Marcus Smart

I just love is overall talent, all-around skill level, and very high basketball I.Q. The game comes very easy to him, and he has a knack for making the right play at the right time. He’s also tough, versitile, a winner, and can play multiple positions, but will most likely have more success as a point guard, where he can have the ball in his hands to be a great playmaker, passer, and decision maker. I think that he will also surprise people with his underrated athleticism, strength, and ability to utilize very good footwork, balance, and body control when posting up and attacking defenders off the dribble. I think he’ll catch nba scouts attention with his craftiness and ability to play the game of basketball the right way and in a very efficient manner that will lead to many wins for the oklahoma state cowboys

You guys also have to humble yourself and realise that marcus is still a young developing basketball player. Who has the potential to develop into a great combo guard in the NBA. He’s also still growing in his ability to balance the need to be a scorer and facilitator from the point guard position ( example: when to pass and when to shoot ) And no doubt has to improve his shot selection skills. I believe that marcus actually has pretty decent shooting mechanics, and once he improves his shot selection skills, then he will naturally become a more efficient shooter.

Also the reality is that I personally don’t think that marcus will ever be a elite level scorer, but will most likely develop into a elite level playmaker, defender, and decision maker. Who can score at a high level when needed and provide his team with a great combination of mental toughness, physical toughness, and leadership abilities. He’s just a tremendous competitor who will do whatever it takes to help his team win

    Weaknesses :

1.Can he play the point guard position at a high level in the NBA?
2.Is he a star or is he just a great role player?
3.He’s a very efficient ball-handler who only dribbles with a needed purpose. But does he have the ball handling creativity and instincts to break down any defense and get to anywhere he needs to get to on the court ( Like Kyrie Irving or like Steve Nash )
4.Will his lack of explosive athleticism hurt his abiliy to be a dynamic shot creator and shot maker in the NBA or will his craftiness, good footwork, balance, and bodycontrol stll allow him to be a very effective scorer in the NBA?

    NBA Comparison

Best Case Scenario: Chauncey Billups / Andre Miller

    Worst Case Scenario: Dominique Jones

To say he will win rookie of the year is quite bold at least since quite a couple of lottery teams got their pgs for the future already which makes the chance greater for him to end up in a suboptimal position on a team where he dont get enought time. Only place i see at least high lottery where he would get freepass would be orlando and im not sure they would pick him. At a lot of the other teams he would have to earn his pt and that could make it impossiple for him to be roy.

personally, i have him going to the Phoenix suns where he can play combo guard next to a scoring point guard in goran dragic. think its the best fit for both sides.

Mine: Smart will be inducted into next year’s Hall of Fame. He’ll be so good that they’ll change the rules just for him.

Now I’m not going to say you’re wrong, because obviously that’s your opinion and who knows what will happen, however I have a hard time seeing it happening.

Let me preface my argument by pointing out that I am not a Smart “hater” and actually I’m pretty sure I was one of the first people on this board to rave about this guy. I mentioned him as a possible one and done and one of the best guards in the country way back in July on this board.

That being said for all his talent his game is still very raw. He plays out of control at times and struggled with consistency even at the college level. In the pro’s it will probably be exacerbated, keep in mind that he will be just 19 for most of next season.

The two guys you compare him to as the best case scenario both took a longer time to develop. Miller averaged 11.1 PPG and 5.8 APG as a 23 year old rookie and Billups didn’t really start producing much till his sixth season in the league!. Smart’s learning curve could be pretty steep as well although his ability to rebound and defend should get him plenty of PT until the rest of his game comes along.
