d-grizzlyParticipantHere is my list of the best defender at each position in the league.
at PG : Rondo
at SG : Wade
at SF : Battier
at PF : KG
at C : Howard
Can you name a better defender at each postion? Explain why you think they would be better than my selection.

creepingdefParticipantSwitch Kobe to SG. Kobe’s 8 times NBA All-Defensive First Team. Wade hasn’t even made first yet.

d-grizzlyParticipantI’m going to disagree about Kobe being the better defender. Kobe has moments through out each season in showing outstanding defense, but he’s not as consistant. Kobe got a lot of 1st team defensive selections due to being the most popular player in the nba, in my opinion.
Ron artest won defensive player of the year before, but battier is still the better defender. Thus, kobe’s achievements in making it 8 times 1st team defense – means nothing to me in your debate.

llperezi dont think kg or wade should be on there. Give me ronnie brewer or thabo sefolosha at sg. At pf, i have to think about it for a minute but, kg is no longer the lock down guy he once was.

ChrischiParticipantPaul > Rondo
Rondo is not that good of an on-ball defender as people think. The steals make him a good defender, but a guy like Westbrook for instance plays better on-ball defense. And Paul is a better on-ball defender imo and both should be equal in getting steals, Paul probably a bit better.
Kobe and Wade. It’s tough. Wade gets 1 block a game but Kobe made the 1st team so I’ll give it to him.
Battier on SF
And give Shawn Marion some probs. He held all the top scorers: Wade, Kobe, LBJ, Durant and Melo under their average. I think he held Melo at 12,5%.
PF: Most star PFs suck on defense. I’d take Timmy over Smith because The Hawks were one of the worst defensive teams in the league with one of the worst defense against fastbreaks although Josh Smiths has 2 chase down blocks a year. That’s weird. Kenyon Martin played great defense also but the injuries crush him.

SteroidParticipantJosh Smith is versitale and has the ability to guard multiple positions, and he is a good weak side defender with his shot blocking presense, but that is about it. I never seen Josh Smith turn it on when he had to defend great players. I’d still take Duncan. By default, he is the best post defender even though he would have some trouble with more athletic guys at this point in his career. He’d D-up at least.

butidonthavemoneyNo way Paul is a better defender than Westbrook or Rondo. I’d even rate Hinrich over Paul to be honest with you. Maybe I’m an idiot, but I’ve never seen Paul shut down anybody defensively and I’ve seen Deron Williams pulverize him time and time again. Rondo is my pick.
At shooting guard, I’ll say Dwyane Wade. Kobe is a great defender, and players like Sefolosha, West, Afflalo, Parker, Lee, Jones, Bell, Brewer and Allen are all tough defenders, but none distinguish themselves from each other. If Iguodala is considered a shooting guard, then he could be considered the top defender at his position.
Battier, James or Wallace at small forward. I wouldn’t be mad if you picked any of those three as the best.
I want to put Chuck Hayes or Jeff Foster as the top PF defender, but it has to be Kevin Garnett.
Dwight Howard. Joakim Noah and Tim Duncan are excellent defenders, but Howard is the best.

Im Your FatherParticipantExcept for Paul isn’t a good on-ball defender. As a matter of fact I’d say he’s a worse on ball defender than Rondo. For point guard I’d go with someone like Kyle Lowry.
Also, I’m not sure Kobe being on the first team is grounds for him being a better defender than Wade, I think he mostly made the 1st team on reputation. Kobe was an outstanding on ball defender, and he is still great for stretches, but he has definitely lost a step. I’d go with Sefolosha at the 2.
At SF I’d also go with Battier, but Artest is also up there, as well as Gerald Wallace. Lebron is also getting up there too, though he still has some work to do on his on ball defense. But I was very impressed with his D in the Celtics series, as he essentially shut down Paul Pierce.
I’m not sure who to go with at the 4. Maybe Josh Smith? But his on Ball D isn’t that spectacular. KG is a good option too.
At Center it’s Dwight Howard obviously.

ChrischiParticipantThabo Sefolosha, Gerald Wallace and Ben Wallace underrated defenders??? Every knows they’re good defenders. Ben Wallace is a huge steal for 2mil.
And Paul has gotten a lot stronger if you compare him to his first years. People pick Rondo because he had his first All-Star season while Paul was injured. But Paul made the defensive team in 08 and 09 with around 2.5 steals.

dolla130ParticipantPG Chauncy Billups/Chris paul – rondo is average on ball defender he gets most of his steals from gambling and passing lanes but other then that name 5 players at his position he has proven he can gaurd and i bet there are no PGs in the top 10 in that list
SG. Shane Battier
SF. RON RON

Raef LaFrentzParticipantsymbol = great Thabo pick.
Thabo is definitely in the conversation for being one of the top 5 perimeter defenders in the entire NBA. He can guard PG through SF and occasionally guards the undersized PF. If I was looking a guy who I know would guard the opposing teams best player night in night out, without hesitation, I’d have to look no further then Thabo Sefolosha.Come on, come on, do the Sefolocamotion. (you have to sing it or else it sounds lame)

ghettosermonParticipantYup Mbah Moute is extremely underrated as a defender. He can guard wings and a lot of 4’s. The Bucks as a whole with the exception of Brandon Jennings are just a great defensive team. Were last year and now add back Andrew Bogut, as well as the additions of defenders like Keyon Dooling, Larry Sanders, Drew Gooden. A guy who very few talk about who is a standout defender to me is Taj Gibson. He’s extremely good guarding the post. As far as the comments about Josh Smith and the Hawks, the reason why they Hawks were so poor defensively, one is because Horford is way undersized at the 5, and also Bibby and Crawford let their men blow by them every play leaving the interior vulnerable. Good perimeter defense is in direct correlation with good interior defense. As far as Josh he has supreme shot blocking skills, and great vision in the passing lanes. He’s up and down as a man defender. He has historically been able to shut down perimeter oriented bigs like Dirk, KG, Aldridge, etc, but he struggles with low post bangers.
