Anyone that would be on this forum obviously likes basketball and the NBA draft. I would say what people like even more on this site is the speculation of the players being drafted. I am a nerd a collector basketball cards and have done so for a long time.

This forum is actually very useful because I can read up on everyone’s opinion and determine what players I think are due to break out and what players are under priced relative to everyone’s opinion. There are a lot of players that I have speculated on over the years and some of my notable hits are

What I do is buy a bunch of cards on ebay which I feel are under valued and then resell them after a player starts to gain value. It’s more of a hobby but you can also make a few bucks if you know what you’re doing.

There are some players who’s value is already so high I don’t try to bother speculating on because their prices are already very high and in most instances their cards go down in value.
    Kyrie
    Blake
    Rose
    Lillard

Players I have speculated on and made money
    Kevin Love
    Paul George
    Russell Westbrook
    James Harden
    Jrue Holiday
    Ty Lawson

Players I was wrong about and lost money on
    Hassan Whiteside
    Daniel Orton
    Darren Collison
Fran Vazquez (he was rumored to go to Orlando and didn’t – $50 down the drain)

Players I am currently buying up (have over 20 rookie auto’s for each player) Most auto’s with the exception of Drummond I have paid $5 and under for.

    John Henson
    Jeremy Lamb
    Jonas Valanciunas
    Terrence Jones
    Andre Drummond
    Terrence Ross
    Tony Wroten
Tobias Harris (his cards have tripled in value since his trade)
    Moe Harkless
    Arnett Moultrie
    Donatas Motiejunas

My question is what players am I currently buying up that will never amount to anything. What players not listed should I be buying up? Remember guys like Kyrie are not worth speculating on because their prices are already very high. I am looking to buy low sell high.

What is John Wall’s value? Im guessing it may have went down since he was drafted bc of his lack of success.

Tobias Harris- Im starting to think he did well on a bad team, and maybe he’s a sell high type of guy.

I used to collect them in high school ( late 90’s) and as a result I have some cards I believed to be good. Kobe, KG, Dirk rookies and a lot of other HOF”s random cards, but I was looking at trying to sell them and it looks like the card market really dropped off since the 90’s. A bunch of my Jordan cards got stolen at a party when I was younger, but I have Kobe rookie and it’s worth like 20 bucks.

Maybe I just didn’t collect the right brands when I was younger, but I thought the card market sucked these days. Is there still money in it? I got a bunch I don’t have much use for….excpet for the Joe Wolf one’s, they’re priceless.

I know there’s at least a couple other card collectors on here. I worked at a sports card shop for a number of years and have never been able to leave the hobby alone.

People don’t have any clue how lucrative the hobby can be if you know what you’re doing. But it’s a lot more difficult than identifying good players, or even undervalued players. You have to also identify the potential a particular set has.

The big three that I’ve made money on-

    1. Durant- Realized gain of approx $4k
    2. Rubio- Realized gain of approx $1,500
    3. Kyrie- Realized gain of $1,200, and current Unrealized of approx $3,000. Don’t cross him off your list too fast. I did the same thing with Durant, sold too fast and missed out on about $25,000 in future profits…. no that’s not a misprint. I’m currently in a hold position with an Irving that I spent $1520 on, have had offers of $5K on, but I believe will end up being a $10,000 card.

I paid for most of my undergraduate and masters degrees with the hobby and about 1/3 of the down payment on my house, and a good portion of my LDS mission.

It’s been an extremely valuable tool for me.

Having said all that, and while I think I’m pretty good at it, I’ve lost money on some investments along the way. I lost about $1,000 on Andrei Kirilenko for example (in retrospect, clearly thought with my heart rather than my head on that one)

It seems that the people that you’re currently buying make up a pretty broad spectrum of the hobby. In general I find that it’s better to pick just one or two guys that you think are undervalued, and then be really picky about where you spend your money. Of the guys you have on the list, my money’s on Terrence Ross. If he can get out of Toronto and to a bigger market, he’s exactly the sort of highly exciting player that a ton of people like to collect. Having said that, I haven’t researched what his stuff’s currently selling for.

Anyway, card collecting is cool. Good luck with your collection.

I used to when I was a kid, I have a big book of them with hundreds somewhere stored away that I haven’t seen in probably 10 years or so. I should look back in them and see what kind of gems I have. They’re mostly all 90’s I believe. I know I have Shaq’s rookie card & LSU card(was a huge Shaq fan as a kid!) in that book somewhere, I recall those being my most prized ones. I also have a signed Shaq card(Orlando Magic) in a plaque on my wall.

Yep I still have a pretty big collection from when I was a little kid. Sucks because some of my cards were worth hundreds of dollars till the bottom fell out of the market. I had MJ, Karl Malone, Akeem, Ewing cards from ’87, ’88, ’89.

I had a signed Shaq rookie card from skybox too Cynthia!

I have a Ray Allen rookie card (don’t know how much that’ll be worth), but my most random one is a Tony Gonzalez college basketball card. Yep, the same Tony Gonzalez setting records as an Atlanta Falcon. XD

I have a ton of cards and i’m glad you mentioned that because i’m trying to get rid of my cards. But I do like your thought of buying players who are undervalued and just wait for them to boom

One of my friends does this with jerseys. Buys and resells them for quite a bit of dough.

Dumb question, but how picky are card collectors with condition of cards? Haha I have so many cards in a huge bag. Probably lost all their value though since they’re not in special card protectors. I know I have KG and Shaq rookie cards. But that’s about it. All of my Pokemon cards are in the card protectors.
