Andre Drummond is one of the most overrated centers in this league. I read on one post that he’s a top 5 center in the league already. Andre Drummond have a ton of potential but fans keep saying " if they draft the 2012 class over Andre Drummond would go number 2 overall. I will give you 4 but I’m taking Damien Lillard and Bradley Beal over him. Here’s go my evaluation on Andre Drummond:

    The Good:

    ● Great rebounder

    ● Good in the pick and roll

    ● Great shot blocker

    ● Great potential

    The Bad:

    ● Poor footwork

    ● Poor post defender

    ● Low IQ offensively and defensively

    ● No touch

    ● horrible free throw shooter

I don’t really get the hype around him. I grade big men on touch and footwork because that’s tell their potential as a post player on offense and defensively. See look at Joel Embiid he have great footwork and great touch. I can see him being great on both ends of the court because he got those two skills that set you apart.

Look at these players that have both of those skills:

    ● Dwight Howard

    ● Marc Gasol

    ● Pau Gasol

    ● LaMarcus Aldridge

    ● Blake Griffin

    ● Tim Duncan

    ● Chris Bosh

    ● Jonas V.

    ● Dirk Nowiski

    ● Al Jefferson

    ● Nene

    And plenty more….

Look at the players that have poor footwork and touch

    ● Javale McGee

    ● DeAndre Jordan

    ● Omer Asik

I believe those two skills are natural and don’t believe he can learn that. He can be a great defensive player with experience but he’s really a piss poor offensive and defensive player.

    My top 10 Centers are:

    1) Dwight Howard

    2) Joakim Noah

    3) Marc Gasol

    4) Al Jefferson

    5) DeMarcus Cousins

    6) Brook Lopez

    7) Nikola Pekovic

    8) Marcin Gortat

    9) Nikola Vucevic

    10) Andre Drummond

Vucevic and Pek over Drummond? Neither of them stand out defensively, and Drummond rebounds better and is a better defensive anchor than them. I get that he is being overrated, but calm down.

He’s not a good defensive player by any means. He’s a great athlete and a great shot blocker. But if you watch the tape you will find out that he’s a poor post defender, rim protector, and overall defensive player. Watching him he always jump when he don’t need to jump when he protecting the rim leading to his man always scores on him. He man gives him a pump fake he jumps leading to an and-1  score. He close out pretty average as well.

Nikola Pekovic is a really good post defender and he’s a much better offensive player than Andre Drummond who offensive game is primarily put back dunks and ally oops. Nikola Pekovic is also a great rebounder and if Kevin Love wasn’t on the team he would have much more.

Same goes with Nikola Vucevic in which he’s a pretty good post player that have great touch and he is a descent defender.

When did Dwight Howard develop great touch and footwork? Last I looked, Howard had stagnated offensively, Drummond, still 21 yrs old, has time to develop offensively and defensively. This will be the first time in his short career, that he’ll have a coach who is going to be around for more than a year. Don’t cut the dude short before he even gets a chance to develop under a coaching staff.

I didn’t cut him short. I said he’s not a top 5 center in this league and I said he had a boat load of potential. He came in extremely raw with only know for his athleticism. I like him and believe he will be a defensive anchor one day but not today. If you watch him you will see him get tone of blocks but you will see him seem confused when he guards tougher players in this league and he will struggle with defensive concepts.

I made it known who have the skills that he needs to be a successful big man in this league. To people saying he’s a top 5 big man in this league just go off his potential and not what he is now and that’s a rim protector with low IQ and a pick and roll player.

Also, I’ve been reading that he will become the next  Shaq. All I’m saying people needs to calm down with him because he’s not the player that people perceive him to be right now.

I thought Drummond was improving well under Rasheed Wallace.  As for Nikola, your giving hiim too much credit as well.  I will admit he’s good but he doesn’t have anything out of 10 feet. As far as im concerned, there both in the same boat, but Drummond gets the edge, because he provides a higher energy, and can be a game changer.  Nikola, is a complementary center and isn’t a game changer.

He’ll be overrated if he stays at this point when he’s 24. He’s done much more than expected after watching his only year at UConn. Give him some time and maybe some shooters to space around him to opperate.

Be good. I said people are already calling him a top 5 center right now is pushing it a lot. He probably will be the best center in the league in a couple of years but right now he’s not a top 5 center in the game. He will need to work on his footwork and his touch to reach the level people are expecting him to be and that’s Dwight Howard and if he don’t he will become DeAndre Jordan or even worst Javale McGee.

Last I watched DeAndre Jordan after finally getting a real coach in Rivers developed into one of the best anchors in the league. If Drummond can simply become an Elite rim protector/rebounder while finishing dump offs and oops, IMO , in a league where legit anchors are lacking, number two would be ideal.

Drummond has some of the best hands in the league among big men he always catches tough passes never bobbles anything I thing that says alot about his potential offensively so I disagree with the thinking of him having No touch

I watch him a lot and he don’t have touch. When he gets the ball in the post he can’t complete the jump hook because his don’t got no touch. Just look at Al Jefferson than you go back to Andre Drummond you will see that Al Jefferson has great touch and he could hit jump hooks all day with his touch. He may can catch passes but that’s irrelevant because that has nothing to do with him having touch or not. Him having the ability to catch the ball mean he have good/strong hands.

good posts caray12. if you look beyond the box stats, drummond really isn’t much of a difference maker.

see if you can find him here

    http://www.gotbuckets.com/statistics/rapm/2014-rapm/

he can’t be given the ball on offense and he’s a bad defender.

Espn has projected him to be the best center in the league next year. He’s rediculously young and lacks polish but he doesn’t have that long of a way to go to become the best in the league. Noah and Gasol are better from a skill standpoint and Howard is a diva. Remember that he was on a terribly constructed roster last year and still put up huge numbers. This year he will have SVG who will find a way to get the most out of him. Pretty uneducated post.

How is it an uneducated post when I stated facts that he’s not really a good defender as people advertise him to be. I never said he won’t be a great a player. All I said he’s not a top 5 center as most people think he is right now.

      You said this:

      ● He don’t have a long way to go.

But you also said he’s extremely raw and young. He have a long way to go and he will need serious work on his footwork and touch and the ability to be a better defender. He have a serious mountain to leap over and he have to many flaws to be " the best in the league.

      ● Noah and and Gasol and dre better from skill standpoint and Howard is diva.

Noah and both Gasol’s are better at every thing on the court than Andre Drummond. Andre Drummond is a better rebounder and he’s a better shot blocker but that’s it. Dwight Howard is a DIVA have nothing to do with his style of play and how good of and player he is. You say Dwight Howard is a diva but you can say Andre Drummond is lazy when he was at the University of Connecticut.

      ● He was on a terrible constructed team last and still put up huge numbers

What being on a horrible team have to do with the player. Anthony Davis was on a team with lots of injuries and he put up great numbers. That statement is irrelevant. I won’t say he put up huge numbers because I call huge numbers is what Kevin Love puts up. He averaged about 13 points about and 13 rebounds. That’s not huge number.

      ● This year he will have Stan Van Gundy

Great players don’t rely on coaches to reach their potential. LeBron James had Mike Brown and he was great. Same goes with John Wall, Kyrie Irving, Kevin Love, and plenty more.

I’m bored, so I’m going to respond to this.

        ● He don’t have a long way to go.

        – He really doesn’t have a long way to go to be the best C. He’s not ready yet, but the field is so weak that it isn’t much of a stretch. It’ll be a battle between Embiid, Drummond and Cousins for the next 5-10 years for best C, but he’s right there. At the same time, he is still very raw and young; his upside is far from tapped, but he’s so good at the stuff you can’t teach that he’s a borderline All-Star.

        ● Noah and and Gasol and dre better from skill standpoint and Howard is diva.

Drummond is an underrated passer and I don’t feel like Noah is a better scorer than Drummond really. He lacks post moves just the same, but gets by on being an energy guy. Also, Drummond was NOT lazy at UConn, he was in a very tough situation with two ball-hungry guards who wanted to show they were fine without Kemba, so he rarely got the ball in the post and teams would just zone up so he couldn’t run the pick and roll or get many offensive rebounds. Also, there was the whole coaching carousel with Calhoun’s health messing everything up and Drummond reclassifying late so not getting the benefit of proper training with the team.

        ● He was on a terrible constructed team last and still put up huge numbers

Being on a terribly CONSTRUCTED team is different to being on a horrible team. If you look at Davis, his team was bad because of injuries, but it was still well constructed around his style of play, he was clearly the focus of the team so he was able to put more numbers and everyone on the team knew he was the future. Love again was on a bad team, but one that was built to complement him. He had a post-up 5 in Pek to draw attention down low, he had a pass-first PG in Rubio and he had shooters in Brewer and Martin to complement him. The Minny team was very well suited to him offensively. Drummond on the other hand was with Jennings, Josh Smith and Greg Monroe. Now, I think Monroe can work with him, but Smith adds no floor spacing and has terrible shot selection, Jennings was decent but didn’t quite have a great rapport with his teammates and Drummond got very few shots as a result of everyone else wanting the ball to shoot. Putting up 13 and 13 without being a feature of the team is pretty damn impressive for a second year player, especially when you consider that Noah was THE guy for Chicago and only managed 12.6 and 11.3 last season. Those are huge numbers for a C in that situation.

        ● This year he will have Stan Van Gundy

What’s the difference between all of those guys (except Love) and Drummond? Wall, Kyrie and Lebron all had the ball in their hands as often as they wanted it, they weren’t playing a position that is dependent on other guys to get you involved. As far as Love is concerned, he only broke out once he got a coach that made him the focus of the team and gave him a lot more shots, so while the coach didn’t make him great, he provided him with an opportunity.

Van Gundy is going to make a world of difference for Drummond defensively, and will make sure he gets his chances offensively to work on his game.

Overall, I don’t think he was a top-5 C last year, but I think he definitely will be this season, especially coming off a stint with Team USA.

Big men take longer to develop, it’s also not a post-up league anymore where big guys can hone their footwork in game situations unless the coach is really committed to building around the big guy.

With SVG there I expect Drummond to make a big leap in terms of production, shots attempted and all the rest.

I feel like at the very least he’ll reach the level Dwight was at with SVG, but he has better fluidity and size than Howard, so it wouldn’t surprise me if he surpassed him.

I was saying that he’s not a top 5 center yet and he have ton of potential. I named players that I would consider better than him and that what he is lacking.

Drummond hung 26pts and 26rebs on Joakim Noah, defensive player of the year. If u wanna talk about overrated start with Noah.

Even with.all his "savvy" Noah has never in 7 years matched what Drummond did last year.

Dwight Howard proved you dont need great touch to dominate when youre a physical specimen. Drummond will put up D12 numbers

AGREE. Noah getting kinda overrated nowadays really. People say he is an elite defender, but he gets roasted by Cousins or Drummond in the games they played in the season. I mean, just watch Cousin’s highlights against Noah this past season, Noah got BULLIED. Had absolutely no answer for him be it rebounding, staying in front or in post D.

Noah is a great passer, but I feel that majority of it is part of Thibs’ system, where there is constant off-ball screens and cutting. Put him where the Knicks were last yeear and I doubt he will average more than 2. Noah is a great player, just getting a little bit overrated by media and fans nowadays.

He’s been an absolute steal for the Pistons and is probably the only untouchable player on the roster at this point in their rebuilding process.  He already is a monster rebounder and an anchor for the defense.  All of your negatives you listed are true but his growth so far has been surprising.  Under the right coaching he can take the next step and improve his discipline on defense, free throw shooting, and offfensive touch.

At this point, the Pistons have to be elated by what he’s done in his first two seasons, but must continue to work on fine-tuning the technical components of his game.

Yes he’s been overrated by many on here, especially those who think he’s going to get 18-15-2 next season but there is a lot of reason to be optimistic about him. The difference between him now and his year at U-Conn is night and day. He’s improving so quickly at such a young age and has been extremely productive despite his distinct lack of skill at this point. That’s a great sign when you hear how hard of a worker he is. Not to mention he’s actually going to play for a great coach this season. As a rookie most thought he’d bust. Then after his rookie year people said his per 36 min numbers were great but no way he could do that if he played that much. Then last year he played even better while getting more minutes and had the best offensive rebounding season in like a decade. There is a lot to like about him.

lack of skill and poor overall feel for the game, which has been the case for him at every stage of his development. despite the impressive raw box score he doesn’t really impact the bottom line because he’s not even 4th option caliber offensive player given his lack of skill and he’s a poor defender, both in man and help defense.

he’s a prolific garbage man. at least with a guy like pekovic. you can give him the ball on offense and he’s actually a passable defender unlike drummond.

Please explain to me how he’s got poor feel for the game. THis is a guy who managed 13,13 for a season without having any true plays drawn for him AND with an incredibly large, and crowded frontcourt. Did those points and rebounds don’t just pop up out of nowhere, or did he have enough feel, know where the ball was careeening, to actually find the ball over two huge people fiending for other rebounds. ALso, don’t call him a garbage man player. He starts, so you’re point is simply null.

he’s a bad defender. he has poor awareness and he can be manipulated by the offense via fakes. for a massive guy he doesn’t understand leverage and how to use his trunks to root offensive players off the block. he’ll give up on drives, looking for poke away steals.  his steal numbers for a big might look impressive to the naked eye, but he gambles too much on defense. what isn’t reflected in the box score is when he reaches for steals and doesn’t get them.  like when he lingers in the back court or perimeter, reaches and creates a semi-break for the opposition.  those are what lead to defense breakdowns and getting beat 1 on 1 in the post.  he doesn’t do his work early, losing focus when off the ball. he’s late on rotations, relying more on his recovery ability to try to make plays after the initial play isn’t blunted. he gets a lot of goal tending calls too because he relaxes then tries to make up for it.  he doesn’t even talk on defense, so i don’t know where this defensive anchor stuff is coming from. his defensive numbers reflect a negative impact on that end. whatever your source for advanced stats is: gotbuckets, nba stats app, espn’s RPM stats drummond is rated as a negative defensively.

he doesn’t command touches on offense either because he has no feel for the post. he has awkward footwork. he rushes his moves and shots from the post. even his releases are awkward since he doesn’t even have a simple, go-to, over-the-top baby hook. he doesn’t know how to use leverage on this end either. he gets rooted out easily by players smaller than he is. he’s a poor passer as well, being both a poor outlet and interior passer. he’s just not a guy who you would want handling the ball and making moves with it unless he’s finishing a play quickly.

sorry, i can look beyond the raw box score. his offensive rebounding is fantastic. he’s huge, a freak athlete who has awesome hands who can area rebound with the best of them. he gets a lot of opportunities because he’s not even accounted for. a lot of his points are off of him roaming and sitting behind the defense, filling in behind help defenders which he can do since he’s not involved in the initial play. that’s what makes him a garbage man. he scores his points by having his opportunities created for him and cleaning up messes on the o-board, but you would not want to give him the ball and tell him to go to work or play off of him.

Dude we aren’t really disagreeing with you. We’re saying that despite all those things you pointed out he’s producing at basically an All Star level statistically at such a young age and that bodes well for his future. It’s well documented that he’s an incredibly hard worker and while he has a long way to go in a lot of areas he’s improved dramatically over the past two seasons. If he even becomes passable at half the things you mentioned he’s going to put up monster numbers and be a franchise center.

He’s young and yea he isn’t a great post scorer or defender. Yet. The offense may never come but as soon as he learns how to leverage his weight better he will be a good post defender. And let’s be real, you don’t have to be a great post defender because there are no great post scorers.

From what I’ve seen he is a wonderful shot blocker and can play the pick and roll outstandingly. He strips guards here and there. I wouldn’t call Noah overrated(someone did)  but Drummond can be Noah except bigger and stronger.

When people call him top 5 it is more a negative comment on the state of C’s today. He can be argued top 5 and if not he is right there looking in. The reason he would go #2 in a redraft is because of the premium on big men. Not saying guys like Lillard are worse players, it’s saying most would gamble on him as he is so young and has so much potential.

I get what you’re saying. People can jump the gun a bit but you’re talking him down a bit much at the same time.

It’s all about improvement and character for young guys with his type of physical ability.

Here is an article with multiple quotes from Coach K, who is about as respected of an authority on basketball as anyone on the planet.

    http://www.mlive.com/pistons/index.ssf/2014/08/coach_k_says_usa_basketball_wa.html

If he keeps learning and coming in with a good attitude the sky is the limit. He may not be the most well rounded guy now, but if I’m building a team and I get a choice between a 21 year old Andre Drummond or a 29 year old Pek…I’m picking Drummond every day of the week.

I totally thought it’s Drummond no 2 or bust in the 2012 draft. I would have refused to pick somebody else. IF I wasn’t going to pick him, I’d trade the pick. And I wasn’t sure he was a sure made bet at all, but, it was a gamble, but you don’t get a physical specimen like that but once every 10 or 15 years. He’s the most physically gifted center SINCE SHAQ. Yep……
The way that he plays thru people is just uncommon. He’s that strong at 20 or 21 and quick and can jump and long. It’s ridiculous. Back to your point though, he isn’t top 5 now like you said.. I don’t think so. The point is though, he’s getting better so quickly that he’ll be top 2 or 3 in two years or next year so people really aren’t even thinking about if he’s top 5 or not today. .
