Happy Christmas eve folks! Coming up to the halfway point of the season, who would you be selecting for the all-star game if you had to choose today? (With today’s standings too!) Here’s mine:

    WEST:

    Starters: Curry/Harden/Durant/Lebron/Davis

    Reserves: Lillard/George/Westbrook/Jokic/DeRozan/Tobias/Conley

    Injury Reserves:

A fairly obvious starting 5 (literally the top 5 scorers in the league and the last 4 MVPs – all 4 started last year’s game). Reserves are a little more interesting – Lillard, Westbrook, DeRozan and PG return from last year, with first time selections for Jokic, Tobias Harris and (FINALLY) Mike Conley (who gets in on merit, not sentiment, after the Grizzlies’ surprising year. Injury reserves are De’Arron Fox (just beaten out by Conley) and Klay Thompson (didn’t think the Warriors were *quite* dominant enough to meeit 3 all-stars.

    EAST:

    Starters: Kemba/Kyrie/Kawhi/Giannis/Embiid

    Reserves: Oladipo/Simmons/Blake/Beal/Butler/Vucevic/Lowry

    Injury Reserves: Middleton/Richardson

Again, starters are pretty straightforward (including 3 legit MVP candidates and 3 returning starters from last year – the other two have switched conferences!) Reserves were a struggle – four return from last year, with first time selections for Ben Simmons and Nik Vucevic. I forgave Beal for the Wizards’ record and Butler for his transgressions in Minnesota (given the lack of talent in the East). Middleton felt like a snub, but Vucevic has produced more, and I’d prefer to reward Lowry and the Raptors with a second starter rather than the Bucks (who are literally built around Giannis)

    Who are yours? And why?

Is it 12 each conference or 13 now? Either way I’m going 13

    West: Curry/Harden /Durant/Lebron/Jokic

    Reserves: Davis/Lillard/George/Westbrook/Harris/Murray/Derozan/Fox

Jokic gets there as best player on team with best record, that’s why Jamal Murray gets a nod as well. I think the rest a pretty self explanatory, Thompson & Galinari would be my next ones out West.

    East: Simmons/Irving/Leonard/Giannis/Embiid

Reserves: Oladipo/Walker/Griffin/Lowry/Butler/Beal/Pacer(Bojan, Myles or Domas)/Net(Russell or Dinwiddie)

It hurt me to put Simmons and Irving ahead of Victor considering Indiana is sitting ahead of both of them at 3rd in East, but he has missed 11 games as well as not playing as well as last year. The explaining probably needs to come at the Indiana & Brooklyn pick. Now with Indiana it could be Bogdanovic keeps putting up his latest numbers or even Sabonis killing it off the bench with 14/10 in minimal minutes or Turner who has been putting up about 16ppg-10ppg & 3+ bpg lately. I feel someone in Brooklyn needs to be rewarded as well the question is who? If recent play continues I would be going with Dinwiddie despite Russell’s recent late game heroics.

If Orlando make a mini resurgence then Vucevic needs to be included & my other reserve would probably be Andre Drummond

    West

    Starters

    Backcourt – Curry & Harden

Frontcourt – Durant, LeBron & Davis

Reserves – Jokic, George, Westbrook, Lillard, Harris, DeRozan and Fox

    * I know the Nuggets currently have the best record in the conference, but I couldn’t justify putting Murray in when he hasn’t been that great.

    * The Clippers have slipped a bit, but I think Harris still has a great chance.

    * I went with Fox as of right now, but Conley and Gobert are right there.

    * Deep down, I want to see Rose and/or Doncic in the game . . .

    East

    Starters

    Backcourt – Simmons & Irving

Frontcourt – Leonard, Antetokounmpo & Embiid

Reserves – Oladipo, Griffin, Walker, Butler, Vucevic, Lowry & Wade

    * Obviously Wade isn’t having an All-Star season, but will he get in for his last All-Star game?

    * Drummond is having a monster season, but I can’t justify giving the Pistons two All-Stars.

    * Vucevic has played too well to be left off.

    * The Nets are playing well and could sneak an All-Star. I’d go with Dinwiddie.

    * Beal is playing great, but the Wizards have been a major disappointment.

Two spots left – they are between Conley, Fox, Holiday, Doncic and Harris – Conley and Harris get the nod from me, but no issue with any of them

    East
    Simmons Kyrie Kawhi Giannis Embiid
    Walker Oladipo Butler Beal Griffin

Two spots left – they are between Middleton, Lowry, Tatum, Horford, Richardson, Vucevic, Drummond and Wall – I'm going with Horford and Vucevic.

Horford because of his ultra impressive 12 pts and 6 rebounds?

You can tell that Horford is an all-star calibre player by simply watching him play. He is clearly the Celtics second best player and a crucial part to their success.

Of course he is an all star calibre player! So are Damian Lillard and CJ McCollum, that’s doesn’t mean they play in the all star game every year. Every year Horford seems to get a game based on the fact he is an all star “calibre” player while there are so many having better years (Morris on his own team just to pick 1)

Al Horford has always been a far more effective player than his bare stats suggest you don’t become a 5 time All Star with basic career stats of 14 and 8 otherwise.
