At this point in the season Deron is averaging 22 ppg.. a career high I believe and a little over 9 apg, a full assist behind last year.. Al is getting close to 17 and 9. At this point in the season how do you think this duo is faring out? Al is averaging just a shade under last years numbers but I thought that playing with a pg like Williams would boost his stats and level play. I just check espn on how they were each faring out and I must say I was quite surprised… and an interesting statistic Al Jefferson is only getting to the ling 3.5 times a game… WOW. a guy that big and strong (and pretty damn skilled on the low post at least) should be getting to the line wayyyyy more

Mainly cause Al J has never been a household name so you wont hear bout it much but he’s fit in just as well as Boozer did. Having the guy named Millsap helps too though

2 seasons ago he was a 20/10 player, i thought he’d get back to that level playing with DWill; I personally thought  Boozer fit in way better with the Jazz and Williams.. Jefferson was envisioned as a potential franchise player when he was the centerpiece in the Kevin Garnett trade years ago and he did eclipse the 20/10 TWO straight years.. since then he has fallen off and thats why im surprised his numbers arent back to where it was especially 2 years ago. especially since he is playing with williams, i thought jefferson would easily eclipse the 20 point barrier

Knees were jacked last year, and this year he is a less mobile player than millsap so he’s really only getting back to the basket touches. Millsap on the other hand is getting the ball off of pick and roll play, post touches, face up j’s drives everything. The mobility he has over Jefferson is more Boozer like, thus more suited to fit Deron’s game.

Big Al is actually doing good this year. Yes, his numbers are down but there are 3 reasons for this.

    1. He is on a winning team now. A situation he has never been in before so while he is happy he doesn’t really know what to do in late game situations. He also just barely arrived in Utah a little over 5 months ago but only a little over 2 months because of the offseason. So he is still trying to activate himself to the system. This may take a lot than usual because the Jazz system is a lot harder to comprehend especially for someone who has played on 2 low maintenance teams for pretty much his whole career. Of course he was able to average a double double for 2 years in Minny, he was playing with the Wolves a team who hasn’t the playoffs since the days of KG, Cassell and Spreewell. And even then they only lasted till the first round, so the Wolves rarely make it to the playoffs, which means any player can do well with them. Just look at Beasley, he is having an excellent season being the Wolves leading scorer and defining who he is, when just last season he was on a winning team and struggling to get starter’s minutes. Now it’s Jefferson’s turn to play on a winning team. He’s not having the same year as Beasley did in Miami but he isn’t playing like he did in Minny because it’s a different ball game in Utah, just like it is for Beasley.

    2. As Iguapops said his knees were jacked up last year so he didn’t play too much and had a couple of surguries because of it. So he may have lost some of the momentum he had for 2 years in Minnesota.

3 Also like Iguapops said Millsap is playing Boozer’s role of post guy. Dwill has had more time with Millsap. Big Al and Dwill having only been playing for a little over two months so the chemistry is going to take some time. Millsap is a smaller Boozer but he is still playing that role and doing it quite well. Jefferson is playing the 5 and like most teams the 5 does not get much touches. He’s there to rebound the missed shots, block the other team’s shots and instill defensive force. Not much offense is necessary for his position yet he’s averaging about 17 and 9. That’s pretty  darn good for a Center.

After the all-star break and continuing on till next year he should be able to improve those numbers especially the boards. The points should stay about the same however maybe fluctuate by a point or two but not much.

Dwill on the other hand is having a career year but it might be because he has a little too much on his shoulders. He is the team’s number 1 option. The number two option is kind of a tie between Jefferson and Millsap. But when one is hurt like Millsap was in Wednesday’s game against Atlanta, then Utah only has 2 options. One of which is still getting himself acclimated. So consequently when this happens he has to do pretty much everything. Certainly he can handle it but it sure would be nice if Utah would get a legitimate 3rd option to lighten his load a little bit. The problem is they really don’t have much money to do that because of AK’s gigantic contract. Yes, he is a free agent next year, so the Jazz will be able to unstrap themselves a little bit financially but so are CJ Miles and Ronnie Price. Those 2 have to be resigned next year in order for the Jazz to succeed. This causes the Jazz to have little money to use to sign a 3rd option. They still have to use that little money to sign at least one of their draft picks next year. So that 3rd option will probably not come via free agency. In other words unless the Jazz get rid of AK this year then they will probably never have that 3rd option.
